David was warned not to conduct a census of his army.
That led to pride, and less reliance on YWH. Later it led societies to taxation, then control. Castes, tiers, restrictions. Finally numbering with ID's, now data collection, and ultimately DNA collection.
It all started with the census. Imagine a society where no one has an ID, and in fact there is no certain number of inhabitants. Sounds like freedom.
I remember specifically the words, "General Mattis, its time."
