Bayer Pays $10BN To Settle Thousands Of Monsanto Glyphosate Lawsuits

After decades of widespread use as company scientists played down research showing a definitive link between the product and growing rates of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Monsanto parent company Bayer has agreed to pay up to $10 billion to settle claims that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer.

Citing people familiar with the matter, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that the company has agreed to settle tens of thousands of glyphosate-related lawsuits in the US for between $8 billion to $10 billion.

Of that number, $2 billion is considered a "reserve" which can be used to settle future claims.

The rest will be used to settle all of the lawsuits pending in the United States from users of the controversial weed killer, the number of active lawsuits against the Roundup purveyor recently numbered more than 50k.

Talks for an out of court settlement have been ongoing since last summer.

Last year, scientists evaluated a batch of existing studies and determined that Monsanto's ubiquitous weed-killer Roundup and its active ingredient glyphosate increased cancer risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) by 41%, according to a research published in February 2019. Back in 2018, a San Francisco Jury awarded $289 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, who said Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller gave him terminal cancer. That award consisted of $40 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages

Bayer inherited the glyphosate problems during its $60 billion acquisition of Monsanto. After losing three lawsuits and getting stuck with high damages judgments pertaining to risks with the weed killer, Bayer changed its strategy and abandoned its aggressive defense in favor of trying to negotiate a sweeping settlement of the tens of thousands of US lawsuits pending. Analysts had feared the settlement could cost as much as €20 billion, which is roughly double the final amount, which should be a positive for the company's shares.

So far, science has not been able to conclusively clarify whether glyphosate is carcinogenic or not. Bayer holds numerous studies against the classification of the IARC and other researchers. The US environmental agency EPA supports the group and, despite the heated debate about glyphosate, has so far maintained that the controversial pesticide poses no health risk to people if used properly.

Adult Film Star Ron Jeremy Charged With 3 Counts of Rape, 1 Count Of Sexual Assault

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced today that Ron Jeremy has been charged with forcibly raping three women and sexually assaulting another in separate incidents dating back to 2014.

Ronald Jeremy Hyatt was charged with three counts each of “forcible rape and forcible penetration by a foreign object and one count each of forcible oral copulation and sexual battery.”

Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson of the Sex Crimes Division is prosecuting the case.

In May 2014, Jeremy is accused of forcibly raping a 25-year-old woman at a home in West Hollywood.

Jeremy allegedly sexually assaulted two women, ages 33 and 46, on separate occasions at a West Hollywood bar in 2017.

He also is accused of forcibly raping a 30-year-old woman at the same bar in July 2019.

The District Attorney’s Office also declined a case against Hyatt due to insufficient evidence stemming from an incident in 2016.

Prosecutors are recommending bail at $6.6 million. If convicted as charged, Jeremy faces a possible maximum sentence of 90 years to life in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

In a June 8th online event co-sponsored by the Atlantic Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the launch of a planning project to reform NATO called NATO 2030. Stoltenberg told his audience that in order to deal with Russia and China’s strategic partnership which is transforming the global balance of power, “we must resist the temptation of national solutions and we must live up to our values: freedom, democracy and the rule of law. To do this, we must stay strong militarily, be more united politically and take a broader approach globally.”

In the mind of Stoltenberg, this means expanding NATO’s membership into the Pacific with a high priority on the absorption of Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea into NATO’s dysfunctional family. It also means extending NATO’s jurisdiction beyond a military alliance to include a wider political and environmental dimension (the war on climate change is apparently just as serious as the war on terrorism and should thus be incorporated into NATO’s operating system).

Analyzing China’s intentions through the most Hobbesian dark age lens on the market, Stoltenberg stated “they are investing heavily in modern military capabilities, including missiles that can reach all NATO allied countries. They are coming closer to us in cyberspace. We see them in the Arctic, in Africa… and they are working more and more together with Russia.”

In spite of NATO’s Cold War thinking, Russia and China have continuously presented olive branches to the west over the years- offering to cooperate on such matters as counter-terrorism, space exploration, asteroid defense, and global infrastructure projects in the Arctic and broader Belt and Road Initiative. Russia Calls For Immediate Ceasefire in Libya, Denounces Reports About ‘Russian Mercenaries’ As Based On False Data

Seattle Protesters Will Resume Meetings With City Officials in Coming Days, Organiser Says

Anti-racism protesters in Seattle will resume meetings in the coming days after cancelling one due to difficulty getting black representation, movement organiser David Lewis said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan announced that the city intends to reclaim the neighbourhood taken over by thousands of anti-racism protesters after two shooting incidents in the area over the weekend and multiple complaints from local residents and businesses.

"We had to cancel one of them [meetings] simply because getting proper representation from the specifically black community in Seattle has proven to be difficult because there is a lot of representation there", he said, adding that the protesters plan to reinstate these meeting in the upcoming days.

Seattle police have been unable to respond to the calls from the so-called "Capitol Hill Organised Protest", or "CHOP". established by protesters in the vicinity of Capitol Hill about two weeks ago, after police retreated from the East Precinct in the area.

The "CHOP" has been patrolled by private armed individuals. Local activists have said that the CHOP does not come under the authority of law enforcement officers.

"I want to be able to know that I am safe in my own community and I want my children and my children's children to know that they are safe in this community and that and until then, I don't think that we'll be able to stop", Lewis said.

Asked about protesters' training on dealing with police, Lewis said, "If any resistance to an officer results in the death of a human, the only defence that we have is numbers and cameras and vigilance. We've always been telling all of our protesters that to stay safe peace first, be defensive".

Police said that on Saturday night, when a 17-year old was shot dead and a 33-year old was critically wounded, law-enforcement officers were met with a hostile crowd that prevented them from getting to the victims.

Mayor Durkan has been heavily criticised for her handling of the situation, especially by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called on the local authorities to take back the city.

Dramatic Increase In Violence In Afghanistan Ahead Of Planned Intra-Afghan Peace Talks

According to data released by security officials in Afghanistan, more Afghan soldiers were killed and injured in the past week than during any other week in the past two decades of the conflict. The dramatic increase in casualties has occurred notwithstanding ongoing efforts to make progress in peace talks.

Although violence dropped across much of Afghanistan following the Taliban’s announcement of a three-day ceasefire on 24 May to respect the Muslim Eid al-Fitr celebration, officials have accused the group of stepping up attacks over the last couple of weeks in the lead up to peace talks due to take place in Doha, Qatar.

In a statement on Monday 22 June the National Security Council said that the past week was the deadliest in the 19 years of war, with 291 members of Afghanistan’s armed forces killed in Taliban attacks in 32 provinces.

According to the statement, Taliban militants carried out 422 separate attacks in the last week. In addition to the 291 security and defence force personnel who were killed, another 550 were injured in militant attacks, and at least 148 civilians were killed and wounded.

According to NSC Spokesman Javid Faisal, 42 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 105 others were wounded in the violence Taliban committed across 18 provinces.

The NSC statement accused the Taliban of increasing its armed attacks in violation of a promise to reduce violence and work towards peace, and despite the commitment and goodwill of Afghan government to establish conditions favourable to ongoing negotiations.

The NSC added that the ongoing violence is unacceptable for the government of Afghanistan and once again insisted on the Taliban taking meaningful steps to demonstrate their willpower to achieve peace. It added that peace will be prevented by continual delays and challenges if there is no reduction of violence.

Andrew Miller and the National Legal and Policy Center, through their undersigned counsel, filed this complaint against Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Aaron S.J. Zelinsky with the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) for misconduct that occurred during the grand jury proceedings of Mr. Miller regarding the investigation and prosecution of Roger J. Stone.

The complaint was filed with the Department of Justice on Tuesday.

Aaron Zelinsky is slated to speak before Congress and before Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on Wednesday.

On February 11th all four DOJ prosecutors in the Roger Stone case abruptly resigned after the Department of Justice backed down from their outrageous and excessive sentencing recommendations for Roger Stone after he was caught lying to Congress in a process crime.

Roger Stone, a Republican and Trump confidante, is 67 and has NO criminal record.

BHAZ Protesters Harass Black Female Officer: ‘Her Ancestors Are Upset with Her’

Protesters in D.C. on Monday harassed a black female officer, telling her that her ancestors are “upset with her.”

“You want a mask? OK, she don’t want a mask,” a woman said as her male counterpart began targeting the female officer.

“Her ancestors are upset with her. … She needs to work through the trauma that has her out here. The internalized trauma,” a male protester said as the female officer stood calmly, taking the verbal beating, as Breitbart News caught on camera.

Another demonstrator took aim at a line of officers as the night unfolded, informing them through a megaphone that all of their ancestors are in “hell.”

Air Force Disputes Pentagon Report, Says No COVID-19 Cases in Space Force

The Pentagon announced Monday that the newly launched Space Force had its first handful of COVID-19 cases. But the Air Force is now disputing that report, saying the number remains zero.

In the latest Pentagon data, which is published three times a week, officials said Monday that six Space Force members had tested positive for the virus.

However, the Department of the Air Force, which oversees the newest military branch, said that is not accurate.

"At this time, none of the 88 uniformed members of the Space Force have tested positive for the coronavirus," an Air Force official told Military.com on Tuesday.

"We are working to clarify how COVID positive numbers for Department of the Air Force members at bases and units assigned to the United States Space Force will be reported to the Joint Staff," the official said.

It was not immediately clear how the miscommunication occurred. The Office of the Secretary of Defense referred all questions to the Air Force.

The Space Force currently has only 88 members. They include Gen. John "Jay" Raymond, the chief of space operations and head of U.S. Space Command; Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, the senior enlisted adviser of the Space Force and command senior enlisted leader of Space Command; and 86 new lieutenants who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in April.

The sixth military service, which was signed into existence by President Donald Trump on Dec. 20, 2019, is currently operating with the aid of 16,000 airmen detailed temporarily from what was formerly known as Air Force Space Command.

Officials have said that about 6,000 of those temporary personnel will be offered the opportunity to formally transfer into the Space Force by year's end.

Earlier this month, the service said that more than 8,500 active-duty airmen had volunteered to transfer into the branch.

Per the latest official tally, COVID cases continue to rise in the military.

The Pentagon on Monday said there were 655 new reported cases across all its service branches, to include the National Guard Bureau, since Friday.

The Navy continues to lead with 3,010 total cases. Meanwhile, the Army reported the most new COVID-positive members 261 in a four-day span, for a total of 2,803 cases.

French bishop tells faithful to defy govt interference in right worship

June 23, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — As lockdown measures in France continue to be lifted, one of the most outspoken bishops in France against the “confinement” of public worship because of the COVID-19 crisis, Bishop Bernard Ginoux of Montauban, has given a interview to the independent television station TV Libertés.

Answering the questions of Jean-Pierre Maugendre, of “Renaissance catholique,” Bishop Ginoux insisted that the French State should not have interfered with the way in which Catholics worship and how Masses are organized.

Beyond this point of law, Ginoux accused the French State of having forgotten “the spiritual dimension” of the crisis and further underscored the specificity of Catholic worship in which Christ is truly present on the altar in the “bloodless sacrifice” of the Mass.

This point was in fact brought up by traditional priestly institutes and lay associations that obtained the reopening of public worship by a decision of the Council of State after a first series of lifting of lockdown measures on May 11 ignored that aspect of French citizens’ lives.

Bishop Ginoux also complained that discussions between the Catholic Church and the government were conducted bringing together not only the different religions present in France but also Freemasons and secularist organizations as well as the scientific council that dictates sanitary measures relative to the Wuhan coronavirus, although these last groups are against religious worship.

Bishop Ginoux raised other important issues such as the spiritual accompaniment of the sick and the dying and the “disturbing” symbolism of wearing face masks.

COVID-19 infections and related deaths have slowed dramatically in France, and many collective activities have been re-allowed over the last weeks. However, in a number of dioceses, assistance at Mass is still subject to prior registration; limited to one third of churches’ capacity; and, in theory, dependent on wearing masks.

In a ringing phrase, Bishop Ginoux said: “As a Christian, I proclaim that nothing is above God and that we are not to serve the State when it prevents us from serving God.”
