US senators consider easing law so Americans can sue China over coronavirus

Neither party shied away from condemning Beijing, but Democrats saved some of their harshest criticism for Donald Trump and his handling of the pandemic

Current US law prevents Americans from filing suit against foreign governments, with a narrow list of exceptions

US lawmakers debated whether to make it easier for Americans to sue China for damages related to the coronavirus pandemic at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday in Washington.

“At what point in time do we need to put on the table new ideas to stop a recurring event: pandemics coming from China?” said Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and chairman of the committee. “Given the wilfulness, the deceit and the hard-heartedness, for lack of a better word, regarding the Chinese Communist Party’s handling of the coronavirus, I think now the time has come for us to put on the table new tools to deal with an old problem.”

A modern day warrior

Mean, mean stride

Today's Tom Sawyer

Mean, mean pride

Though his mind is not for rent

Don't put him down as arrogant

His reserve, a quiet defense

Riding out the day's events

The river

What you say about his company

Is what you say about society

Catch the mist, catch the myth

Catch the mystery, catch the drift

The world is, the world is

Love and life are deep

Maybe as his skies are wide

New Zealand freezes $90 million connected to accused bitcoin launderer Alexander Vinnik

Authorities in New Zealand have seized the equivalent of $90 million in assets as part of an investigation into a Russian man accused of laundering cybercriminal funds through a global cryptocurrency exchange.

The New Zealand Police announced Monday it had taken control of the funds, equivalent to $140 million in New Zealand dollars, belonging to Alexander Vinnik, the alleged operator of BTC-e, a currency trading platform shuttered by the U.S. government in 2017. The exchange effectively functioned as a money laundering operation for internet scammers engaged in computer hacking, ransomware attacks, fraud and illicit drug sales, according to New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster.

Johnson & Johnson told to pay US$2.1 billion over cancer-causing talcum powder

The decision by an appeals court cut by more than half the US$4.4 billion awarded to 22 people in 2018 for ‘knowingly selling products that contained asbestos’

Johnson & Johnson has faced thousands of lawsuits across the US alleging it failed to warn consumers of cancer risk from asbestos in its talc-based products

A US court has upheld a verdict that talcum powder sold by Johnson & Johnson caused ovarian cancer and ordered the pharmaceutical giant to pay US$2.1 billion in damages.

The decision by the Missouri Court of Appeals cut by more than half the US$4.4 billion a jury had awarded 22 people in 2018. The court agreed that some of the plaintiffs should not have been included in the case as they were from outside the state.

German court orders Facebook to rein in data collection

A top German court on Tuesday ordered Facebook to stop merging data collected through its Whatsapp and Instagram subsidiaries or other websites unless users explicitly agree, in a legal victory for competition authorities.

Germany's Federal Cartel Office (FCO) had told Facebook to rein in the data collecting in a landmark decision in 2019, but the social media giant appealed the order.

In a fast-track proceeding on Tuesday, Germany's Federal Court of Justice (BGH) sided with the FCO watchdog in finding that Facebook was abusing its dominant position to force users to consent to all their data being collected.

"Facebook does not allow for any choice," presiding judge Peter Meier-Beck said in the Karlsruhe courtroom.

The City That Builds Russia's Nuclear Submarines Now Has Over 2,000 Covid-19 Cases

Two naval construction yards in a northern Russian city near the site of last year’s mysterious nuclear testing accident have become new hotbeds for the coronavirus.

Severodvinsk is near the Nyonoksa testing site where an August 2019 explosion during a rocket engine test killed five nuclear workers and led to a radiation spike. The building of nuclear subs and other naval vessels continues despite the increasingly serious virus situation.

Approximately 43% of all infections in the Arkhangelsk region are in Severodvinsk, regional authorities recently announced.

Nets Ignore Audio of Death Threats, Racial Slurs Sent to Sen. Tim Scott

While the liberal broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) found time to continue to boost John Bolton’s new anti-Trump book (CBS), decry President Trump’s rallies, and promote the Democratic challenger of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (NBC) Tuesday night, they all turned a blind eye to a New York Times report detailing recent death threats and racial slurs being left on the office voicemail of Republican Senator Tim Scott (SC), who’s the only black Republican in the chamber.
