Victim Spilled His Guts to FBI’s Jeffrey Epstein Sex Trafficking Task Force; FBI Covered It Up

See something; Say something? Not when it comes to a victim spilling his guts to the FBI’s heralded federal task force on Jeffrey Epstein’s — and his elite associate’s — sex crimes with children. Thomas Paine describes — in disturbing detail — one victim that he personally walked into the FBI to gives witness testimony to this task force and how it has been since covered up, according to alarming FBI revelations

Trump Slams BLM Leader: This Is Treason, Sedition, Insurrection!

In what is sure to elevate race tension to '12' (since they are already at '11'), President Trump has responded to comments from the BLM movement's leader earlier in the week:

Trump's comment follow comments by Hawk Newsome - who chairs Black Lives Matter of Greater New York argued that because violence and rioting appeared to be getting the point across more effectively, those efforts were justifiable.

A tense exchange with Fox's Martha MacCallum lays out the details (and likely triggered Trump):

MacCallum began by quoting Newsome as saying that he wanted to “shove legislation down people’s throats,” and then asked him, “What exactly is it that you hope to achieve through violence?”

Newsome responded by claiming that the United States had been “built upon violence,” citing the American Revolution and arguing that American diplomacy largely consisted of blowing up other countries and replacing their leaders with leaders we liked better.

MacCallum responded: “The only reason I posed that first question to you the way that I did, I watched you talking on a bunch of different interviews today and you said, ‘Burn it down.’ You said it, ‘Burn it down, it’s time.’ So that makes me think that you want to burn it down.”

“If this country doesn’t give us what we want then we will burn down the system and replace it,” Newsome replied. “And I could be speaking figuratively, I could be speaking literally. It’s a matter of interpretation.”

This came on the heels of comments from another BLM co-founder earlier in the week. As we detailed earlier in the week, while massive protests continue to rage across the country (and beyond) in the name of George Floyd, Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors admitted during a Friday night interview with CNN that "our goal is to get Trump out."

F-35A Joint Strike Fighters Banned from Flying Near Lightning over Explosion Concerns

Lockheed Martin Corp. recently paused F-35 Joint Strike Fighter deliveries over an internal gas issue that could cause the stealth fighter to explode if struck by lightning.

The company said Wednesday that maintainers performing a routine maintenance check at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex in Utah found damage to a tube within the Onboard Inert Gas Generation System, known as OBIGGS, in the Air Force's variant of the Lightning II jet.

"Lockheed Martin initiated a delay in deliveries while we verified F-35 production is conforming to specifications with regard to OBIGGS installation," the company said in a statement. "We are working with the F-35 Joint Program Office on a root cause corrective action investigation to determine next steps, as it appears this anomaly is occurring in the field after aircraft delivery."

While deliveries have resumed after a nearly four-week pause, the JPO has advised local F-35A squadron commanders to avoid flying "within 25 miles of lightning or thunderstorms," according to the statement. Lightning strikes on aircraft are statistically rare, occurring about once per year according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The advisory guidance will remain in place until the root cause and corrective action investigation is complete, said JPO spokeswoman Brandi Schiff. "The safety of F-35 operators remains an enduring high priority for the JPO," Schiff said in an email.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported the flawed tubing was found within 14 of 24 Air Force models of the fighter jet undergoing inspection. Lockheed Martin spokesman Brett Ashworth told Defense News the flaw seems to be limited to the Air Force's variant of the jet, which is also the version flown by the majority of the program's international partners.

The OBIGGS works to replace much of the oxygen built up in the fuel tank with nitrogen. Doing so helps prevent vapors in the fuel tank from combusting should the jet be struck by lightning.

The F-35 has seen this problem before: The Pentagon's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) disclosed the deficiency, dating back to 2009, in a 2012 report, saying, "The system is not able to maintain fuel tank inerting through some critical portions of a simulated mission profile."

'Sounds Like Terrorist Threat': Netizens Disgusted by BLM Leader’s Remark About Burning Country

This is not the first time that Hawk Newsome has made such a comment. Addressing demonstrators on 7 June during protests over the death of African-American man George Floyd, who died at the hands of a white police officer, he said: “Give black people their rights or we will burn this country to ashes”.

Social media users were left disgusted by a statement of the president of Greater New York Black Lives Matter (BLM) that was made during a recent interview on Fox News. Hawk Newsome spoke with host Martha MacCallum about the direction of the Black Lives Matter movement, which claims to be fighting against racial discrimination and violence towards African-Americans, and about the violent behaviour of some of the demonstrators. Newsome said that the riots and violent behaviour were the only way to make authorities pay attention to the discrimination and police brutality against African-Americans.

"Let's observe the history of the 1960s, when black people were rioting. We had the highest growth in wealth, in property ownership. Think about the last few weeks since we started protesting. There have been eight cops fired across the country. Any time a cop hurt a woman, hurt a child, hurt pregnant people, hurt our elders there was always a call for due process, you must wait, but the moment people start destroying property now cops can get fired automatically. What is this country rewarding? What behaviour is it listening to? Obviously not marching”, said Hawk Newsome.

MacCallum also asked Newsome to comment on a remark he made earlier this month about burning the country to ashes. The president of Greater New York Black Lives Matter said the following:

"If this country doesn't give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it. All right? And I could be speaking … figuratively. I could be speaking literally. It's a matter of interpretation".

Ron Coleman, a New York attorney and political commentator, said that Newsome’s statement proves that the intentions of Black Lives Matter are not peaceful.

"No one can pretend to be surprised by these comments, because the posture of BLM is entirely subversive. Its intentions are not peaceful and its putative model is the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917. Having said this, however, in reality the BLM leadership is bourgeois and this talk is nothing but posturing. BLM has every interest in preserving the state and society it claims to despise, because its true purpose is to latch onto that society’s considerable wealth and benefits, merely from a better position than it does now. The young white radicals that make up the main body of BLM street agitators lap up this agitprop gratefully. It makes them feel revolutionary and virtuous as they turn up the XM Radios in their BMW’s for the trip back to the suburbs”.

Newsome's statement caused uproar on social media, with people saying that such comments are equivalent to a terrorist threat.

CDC: Coronavirus may have infected 10 times more Americans than known

Nearly 25 million Americans may have contracted the coronavirus, a figure ten times higher than the number of confirmed cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

In a briefing with reporters Thursday, CDC Director Robert Redfield said surveys of blood samples taken from around the country suggest that millions of Americans may have contracted the virus either without knowing it or with only minimal symptoms.

For every one confirmed case, Redfield said, the CDC estimates that ten more people have been infected.

"This virus causes so much asymptomatic infection," Redfield said. "We probably recognized about 10 percent of the outbreak."

Almost 2.4 million Americans have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine. Redfield said the serological surveys of blood samples, collected both for coronavirus tests and for other reasons like blood donations or laboratory tests, showed that between 5 percent and 8 percent of Americans have contracted the virus.

Most people who contract the SARS-CoV-2 virus show few if any symptoms, and only a small percentage require hospitalization. But while the number of potentially infected people is multitudes higher than the number of confirmed cases, Redfield also said the relatively low percentage of Americans who have been infected means hundreds of millions more remain at risk.

"This outbreak is not over. This pandemic is not over. The most powerful tool that we have, powerful weapon, is social distancing," Redfield said. "We have responsibility to practice the social mitigation strategies to protect the vulnerable, to protect the elderly."

CDC officials are warily eyeing growing numbers of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in Southern and Southwestern states, Redfield told reporters in a conference call. More than 100 CDC staffers are deployed to about 20 states to help local health departments deal with the exploding number of cases.

Case counts have grown especially in states like Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia, all states where the average daily number of confirmed cases has doubled or more in the past two weeks. Hospitalizations are on the rise in many of those states, and Texas and Arizona officials have both sounded the alarm in recent days about dwindling hospital capacity.

No final decision on Israeli annexation after 3 days of White House talks

US Ambassador Friedman, Mideast envoy Berkowitz set to return to Israel for more work, less than a week before Netanyahu’s July 1 target date to start process

The White House has not made a final decision in a round of talks about whether to back Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank, a senior White House official said.

“There is yet no final decision on next steps for implementing the Trump plan,” the official said.

The discussions have concluded for the time being after three days, with US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and US Mideast envoy Avi Berkowitz heading to Israel for more work on the issue.

The White House discussions reportedly also included senior adviser Jared Kushner and national security adviser Robert O’Brien. It was not clear whether US President Donald Trump was actively involved in the meetings.

A Channel 13 news report last week said Friedman, who flew back to the US for the meetings, strongly backs Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declared intention to go ahead with the move starting July 1, but Kushner was said to be more ambivalent.

Everywhere Statues Are Torn Down By The Mob, History Promises People Are Next

The promise of bloodshed coming alongside or following shortly after is an historic certainty. The symbols of a people never satisfy: People themselves must always come next.

Blood is already spilling, with civilian defenders, bystanders, workers, and rioters killed and seriously injured in cities all across the country. Without a committed and targeted crackdown on this disorder and its leaders, the committed and targeted killings of their opponents and critics will come next.

Why, exactly, have Israelis been ordered to pay Netanyahu’s taxes?

It’s hard to see why PM’s bill should be protected from the scrupulous attentions of the tax authority and summarily reduced just because he has a loyal majority on a Knesset panel

The way the Likud’s Miki Zohar told it, in an Army Radio interview on Wednesday afternoon, Israel’s heartless tax authority was bent on turning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into a veritable pauper.

The evil taxman was demanding hundreds of thousands of shekels in back taxes from Netanyahu, said Zohar, the coalition chairman, and was threatening to “impose a lien” on his assets unless the money was paid immediately.

What?! Really?! The tax authority was about to place a lien on the prime minister’s assets in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, asked the incredulous interviewers. Zohar appeared to backtrack a little. Well, they were insisting Netanyahu had to make the payment right away, he said.

And that, continued Zohar, was why the Knesset’s powerhouse Finance Committee had been compelled, in the middle of the gravest economic crisis in modern Israeli history, to spend hours on Tuesday debating Netanyahu’s request for almost a million shekels ($270,000) in tax rebates and benefits. This on a day when the latest figures showed the unemployment rate at a staggering 20.8%, and as social workers and theater staffers took turns holding what have become daily demonstrations by Israel’s battered workforce against the government’s financial policies in response to the virus.

‘Nobody knows exactly’ how much

Forgive us if we haven’t reported exactly why Netanyahu was granted almost a million shekels in tax rebates and benefits by the committee.

We understand the sums apparently relate chiefly to renovations at his private home in Caesarea in the years 2013-2017 (at a reported cost of some NIS 600,000) and his use of the bulletproof prime ministerial car from 2017-2019 (NIS 324,000). But the specifics have proven hard to pin down.

Are these all costs that were incurred in the fulfillment of his office? The use of the car plainly was, but don’t all Israelis who have company cars pay a tax on that benefit, and is Netanyahu now being exempted, and retroactively too, from any such payment? As for his Caesarea home, do the rebates relate to necessary upgrades for security purposes or, as a Channel 13 report indicated, fixing up the pool and gardening work? Is the Israeli taxpayer funding hedge-cutting and lawn-mowing at the prime minister’s private residence?

Crucially, too, were these rebates sought by, and granted to, previous prime ministers — as Zohar and Netanyahu’s Likud party have insisted is the case?

ICE files detainer on Mexican national arrested for child rape

ST. GEORGE, Utah – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) filed a detainer June 19 on a Mexican national accused of child rape and aggravated sexual assault on a child.

Roberto Garcia-Madrigal, 47, turned himself into police June 3 after a warrant for his arrest was issued by a judge in Weber County for charges of rape, sodomy and aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The detainer, filed in St. George, was issued in response to his arrest.

“When local jurisdictions cooperate with ICE, we can keep dangerous predators behind bars while they face justice keeping the community-at-large safer from crime,” said Sylvester Ortega, acting field office director for ERO Salt Lake City. “The public needs to know that cooperation between all law enforcement agencies makes their communities safer by providing justice and closure for victims. We will continue to protect the community from criminal illegal aliens that hurt the citizens of this country.”

Garcia-Madrigal claims to have entered the U.S. sometime in 1975 and has no other documented immigration history.

Garcia Madrigal has arrests from several states beginning in 1989 for grand theft auto and weapons possession, and through the 1990s for cocaine possession, burglary, more weapons charges and receiving stolen property.

ICE lodges detainers on individuals who have been arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period of time so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency’s custody. When law enforcement agencies honor immigration detainers it ensures ICE’s ability to protect public safety and carry out its mission.

ICE focuses its limited resources, first and foremost, on those who pose the greatest threat to public safety and border security and does not target aliens indiscriminately; the agency conducts investigations and gathers intelligence on specific individuals for immigration enforcement.

Biden Cancer Nonprofit Paid Its Top Execs Millions. It Spent Little to Eradicate Cancer

Nearly 65 percent of the Biden Cancer Initiative's money went into the pockets of staffers

Nearly two-thirds of the money the Biden Cancer Initiative spent since its founding in 2017 went toward staff compensation and six-figure salaries for top executives. The group spent far less on efforts to eradicate cancer.

One of several nonprofits Joe Biden created following his tenure in the White House, the Biden Cancer Initiative paid top executives lavishly, with salaries comprising nearly 65 percent of its total expenditures. That is well above the 25 percent charity watchdogs recommend nonprofits spend on administrative overhead and fundraising costs combined.

The nonprofit raised and spent $4.8 million over its two years in operation, its 2017 and 2018 tax forms show. Slightly more than $3 million of that amount went to salaries, compensation, and benefits. At the same time, the group spent just $1.7 million on all of its other expenses. A bulk of this cash—$740,000—was poured into conferences, conventions, and meetings. It did not cut a single grant to any other group or foundation during its two-year run.

An analysis of nonprofits by Charity Navigator, which rates charities for effectiveness, found that mid-to-large-sized nonprofits paid their chief executives an average salary of $126,000 per year—far less than what the Biden Cancer Initiative paid its president, Greg Simon, who pocketed $224,539 in 2017 and $429,850 in 2018. Charity Navigator's primary criterion for rating charities is whether they "spend at least 75% of their expenses directly on their programs."

The Biden cancer group's financial disclosures may raise new questions about whether the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee allowed associates to profit off their access to him. Before going on to receive six-figure salaries from the Biden Cancer Initiative, Simon and the initiative's vice president, Danielle Carnival, previously worked for the Obama administration's Cancer Moonshot program. Biden's son Hunter received $50,000 a month to sit on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma despite an apparent lack of qualifications. James Biden, Joe Biden's brother, joined a construction firm in 2010 that later won a $1.5 billion contract to build homes in Iraq while Biden oversaw Iraq policy. Biden's presidential campaign has been plagued with questions about Hunter's and James's financial activities.

ABC, NBC, CBS newscasts skip Democrats opposing GOP-authored police reform bill

Democrats opposed the Republican-authored police reform bill Wednesday – but anyone who relies on the evening newscasts of ABC, NBC or CBS for information would have no idea.

ABC’s “World News Tonight,” “NBC Nightly News” and CBS’ “Evening News” all ignored the story on Wednesday night, according to NewsBusters.

The Democrats, who opposed the bill on the basis it did not go far enough, sparked a furious war of words on the floor, marking an apparent impasse just weeks after George Floyd's death while under the study of Minneapolis police led to calls for new legislation.

NewsBusters analyst Nicholas Fondacaro wrote that ABC, NBC and CBS “completely ignored how Senate Democrats sank the police reform legislation,” noting that “Fox News Channel’s ‘Special Report’ wasn’t trying to hide the truth from their viewers.”

“Anchor Bret Baier addressed the death of the bill during the panel discussion with Axios reporter Jonathan Swan and Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel,” Fondacaro wrote.

ABC News, CBS News and NBC News did not immediately respond to separate requests for comment.

The procedural vote on whether to start debate was 55-45; it needed 60 votes in order to proceed. Republicans had 53 votes, but not enough Democrats joined them. The decision essentially froze police reform in Congress for now, even if the House approves its own measure on Thursday.

“The Senate was supposed to officially take up police reform on the floor today. Instead, our Democratic colleagues are poised to turn this routine step into a partisan impasse,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., fumed Wednesday, saying the bill was a “first offer” and could have been altered during the debate process.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., shot back at McConnell, and said the bill was the "legislative equivalent of a fig leaf, something that provides a little cover but no real change."

The GOP legislation, spearheaded by Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., would beef up requirements for law enforcement to compile use-of-force reports. It would also establish the Breonna Taylor Notification Act to track “no-knock” warrants. To focus on ending chokeholds, it encourages agencies to do away with the practice or risk losing federal funds.

However, the bill did not ban chokeholds outright and does not end qualified immunity – two items that Democrats have demanded.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate have proposed bills amid the movement to reform policing in the wake of Floyd's death last month.

House Dems Unanimously Block Resolution Condemning Violence and Rioting

Resolution also decried efforts to defund the police

House Democrats unanimously blocked a resolution condemning acts of violence and rioting—including the "deliberate targeting of law enforcement officers"—in the wake of George Floyd's death.

The resolution, which was introduced by Rep. Greg Steube (R., Fla.) late Thursday morning, condemned Floyd's killing at the hands of police, calling it "inconsistent with the values and conduct expected of law enforcement officers." The resolution also supported peaceful protesters, but it noted that protests have been "exploited by violent extremists" carrying out "acts of violence, looting, destruction of business and personal property, and additional loss of life."

Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio) spoke in favor of the resolution, arguing that while Floyd's death was "wrong as wrong could be," there is a "big difference between peaceful protest and rioting." Jordan also spoke against defunding the police, calling it "one of the craziest public policy proposals I have ever seen."

"I think [the resolution] is consistent with where American values are, consistent with the problems we face, consistent with the serious situation we are in," Jordan said. "If we allow this ‘defund the police' concept to happen … it will not only be tough for police officers, we all know that, but the communities they serve—what will happen there is frightening."

No House Democrats voted in favor of Steube's resolution. Rep. Justin Amash (I., Mich.) voted with Republicans to support the measure.

A number of Democratic lawmakers have supported the call to defund police following Floyd's killing, including far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.). Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) advocated for the dismantling of the Minneapolis Police Department in June, calling it "rotten to the root" and a "cancer."

While major cities across the United States have already proposed or approved slashing police budgets, decades of research indicates that better-funded police departments drive down crime and create social benefit. Officials in New York City, Hartford, Austin, Minneapolis, Baltimore, and Los Angeles have all entertained defunding or abolishing police, despite holding some of the highest violent-crime rates in the nation.

Turning Angel Statue Overlooking Children's Graves Toppled in Natchez City Cemetery

The famed Turning Angel statue in Natchez City Cemetery in Mississippi was toppled in a suspected act of vandalism on Tuesday.

One of the angel's wings was broken.

"The Turning Angel is a landmark of Natchez and has been in its spot in the Natchez City Cemetery since it was placed there by the owner of the Natchez Drug Company to commemorate the lives of five girls who died in the building when it exploded in 1908," The Natchez Democrat reported.

The Turning Angel was the inspiration for a New York Times best selling novel of the same name by Greg Iles.

From The Natchez Democrat:

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said police are investigating the incident as a destruction of property case and are asked anyone in the area with surveillance cameras to share any video that might help locate possible suspects."

[…] "Hopefully somebody will be made to feel guilty about what they've done," said Elise Rushing, president of the Natchez City Cemetery Board. "It is terrible. A cemetery to be desecrated because of … I can't think of any good reason why someone would damage a grave site."

I can think of one reason.

On Monday afternoon, Black Lives Matter leader Shaun King called for statues, murals and stained glass windows of "White Jesus" to be targeted and tweeted "tear them down" to his million followers on Twitter.

Wirecard’s Banks, Creditors Stand To Lose Billions As Payment Processor Collapses

The company’s auditor Ernst & Young refused to validate its 2019 financial statements

Ex CEO Markus Braun posted bail and is no longer in custody

Wirecard owes about $4 billion to creditors

Banks which had made loans to Wirecard AG, the scandal-ridden German payment processor that collapsed on Thursday, may be looking at losses of some $1.8 billion.

Bloomberg reported that a group of banks including Dutch lenders ABN Amro Bank NV and ING Groep NV (ING) and Germany’s Commerzbank AG had been negotiating with Wirecard regarding a 1.75 billion euro ($2 billion) credit facility that was already about 90% drawn.

These discussions abruptly ended when Wirecard filed for insolvency in a Munich court, surprising some of the banks.

The payments company informed the court that, with 1.3 billion euros ($1.5 billion) of loans due in less than a week its survival was “not assured.”

Bloomberg reported that Barclays, Credit Agricole, DZ Bank, Lloyds, Bank of China, Citi, Deutsche Bank, MUFG, Raiffeisen Niederosterreich, Agricultural Bank of China and Raiffeisen Oberosterreich were also exposed to Wirecard.

Ironically, the banks had granted Wirecard a short reprieve on its loans, rather than force the firm to repay the loans immediately.

Wirecard’s collapse was triggered by suspicions of massive fraud arising from the apparent disappearance of $2.15 billion from its account books. The company’s auditor Ernst & Young refused to validate its 2019 financial statements.

“There are clear indications that this was an elaborate and sophisticated fraud involving multiple parties around the world,” Ernst & Young said.

The company now is embroiled in a criminal investigation and its former Chief Executive Officer Markus Braun was arrested. He has since posted bail of 5 million euros ($5.6 million) and is no longer in custody.

Wirecard’s former chief operating officer Jan Marsalek is also under investigation and currently believed to be in the Philippines,

Pelosi throws cold water on impeaching Barr

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday tamped down the possibility that House Democrats could pursue impeachment of Attorney General William Barr over accusations that he has politicized the Department of Justice.

Some Democrats have expressed interest in pursuing impeachment proceedings against Barr after the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday during which Justice Department officials alleged that the agency had taken in political considerations when handling cases against allies of President Trump's.

But Pelosi suggested that any referendum on Barr should be done at the ballot box in November.

"A hundred and thirty-one days from now, we will have the solution to many problems, one of them being Barr," Pelosi said during a Washington Post Live event.

"Anyone who saw that testimony will know that Barr is a mess. He's a disgrace to the Department of Justice," Pelosi said.

The House voted last year to hold Barr, as well as Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, in contempt for defying subpoenas related to documents on efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

Barr has drawn further ire from House Democrats since then, most recently over the Justice Department's moves to dismiss the criminal case against Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn and recommend a lighter sentence for his former political adviser Roger Stone. They also strongly object to the firing of the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, who had been investigating people with ties to Trump.

But Pelosi indicated that she thinks the best path forward is for voters to kick Trump out of office in 4 1/2 months.

"So he is contemptible, there's no question about that. But at this point, let's solve our problems by going to the polls and voting on Election Day, 131 days from now," Pelosi said.

Her comments came a day after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) expressed openness to impeaching Barr, after initially dismissing the idea days earlier.

"We're looking into that, we may very well," Nadler said on Wednesday. "I think the weight of the evidence and of what's happened leads to that conclusion."

Nadler had previously said during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that he thought pursuing impeachment proceedings against Barr would be a "waste of time" given that Republicans still control the Senate.

Two other Democrats, Reps. Steve Cohen (Tenn.) and Bill Pascrell (N.J.), have called for Barr's impeachment.

A Justice Department spokeswoman said Wednesday that Barr has agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in late July, where he is likely to be repeatedly pressed on the allegations that the agency has been politicized during his tenure.

Macy’s Layoffs 2020: Why 3,900 Corporate Employees Will Lose Their Job

Macy’s (M) announced that it will be laying off 3,900 workers from its corporate offices, including a series of management positions.

The retailer will also reduce its workforce throughout its stores, supply chain, and customer support network because of a dip in sales because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Macy’s closed all of its stores temporarily on March 18 because of the COVID-19 crisis and began reopening locations on May 4. The company has undergone a phased reopening as local and state guidelines allow.

The department store chain said the job cuts will allow it to align its costs as it recovers from the impact of the pandemic. The company plans to bring back many of its furloughed employees in the first week of July.

Macy’s said it expects the layoffs to provide about $365 million in cost-savings in fiscal 2020, about $630 million on an annualized basis. The company previously announced cost-cutting measures that were designed to save an estimated $1.5 billion by the end of 2022.

“COVID-19 has significantly impacted our business. While the reopening of our stores is going well, we do anticipate a gradual recovery of business, and we are taking action to align our cost base with our anticipated lower sales,” Chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette said in a statement. “These were hard decisions as they impact many of our colleagues.”

Gennette continued, “We know that we will be a smaller company for the foreseeable future, and our cost base will continue to reflect that moving forward. Our lower cost base combined with the approximately $4.5 billion in new financing will also make us a more stable, flexible company.”

Under Pressure, Google To Pay Some Outlets For News Content

Google announced plans Thursday to pay some news organizations for content in a departure from its past practice following pressure from governments and media groups around the world.

While details of the plan were not known, the move could represent a significant shift by the internet giant and follows initiatives by Facebook and Apple to create news products in partnership with media outlets.

Google said it would pay media partners in three countries and cover the costs of pay-walled news sites to give users free access to a dedicated news app.

The program will begin with "local and national publications in Germany, Australia and Brazil" and is set to expand to more countries soon, the tech giant said.

"A vibrant news industry matters – perhaps now more than ever, as people look for information they can count on in the midst of a global pandemic and growing concerns about racial injustice around the world," said Brad Bender, Google's vice president for news product management.

Google intends to pay for "high-quality content for a new news experience launching later this year" to allow media groups to "monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience," Bender said.

The move comes with legacy news organizations struggling with declining print readership and challenged by the digital ecosystem where ad revenue is dominated by tech platforms such as Google and Facebook.
