One news outlet states he died in the hospital and the other states he died in the fire.
To be honest I think the fire was just a coincidence and an opportunity to act. Some washed up Artist couldn't get out from his debts or sell the 50th floor apartment. Had serious health problems as well. Sounds like it was suicide.
The FBI sees the fire as an opportunity to get to Cohen's files.
