New Jersey Mail-in Ballots Reportedly Destroyed in Mail Truck Fire

Mail-in ballots addressed to dozens of homes in New Jersey’s Morris Township may have been destroyed in a mail truck fire, Morris County Clerk Ann Grossi announced on Wednesday.
The ballots, sent to residents ahead of the state’s July 7 primary per Gov. Phil Murphy’s (D) executive order requiring ballots to be sent to every registered voter, were addressed to 91 homes in the county. Morris County remains a GOP stronghold, despite the Garden State’s Democrat leanings, overall.
Officials say Saturday’s mail-truck fire affected both Republican and Democrat mail-in ballots.
“A postal vehicle experienced mechanical problems and caught fire on the afternoon of June 20, on Lord William Penn Drive,” George Flood, spokesperson for the Northeast region of the U.S. Postal Service, said, according to North Jersey.
“At the time of the fire, the truck contained mail for a total of 91 addresses on six streets remaining on the route,” he continued. “We notified residents at the 91 addresses involved.”
“In addition, we alerted the Morris County Board of Elections to enable the eligible residents to receive replacement vote-by-mail ballots,” he added.
Those who have yet to receive their ballots are asked to call the clerk’s office.
The news comes on the heels of another ballot-related incident, as hundreds of New Jersey Republicans received misprinted mail-in primary ballots, listing Democrat candidates instead of Republicans.

As it turned out, anywhere from 500-700 of the 2,400 registered Republican voters in Bernardsville received a misprinted ballot listing Democrat candidates instead of Republicans.
While the county clerk’s office typically prepares the ballots, the office outsourced the work to the printing company Reliance Graphics, Inc., due to the governor’s last-minute order requiring county election officials to send ballots to all registered Republican and Democrat voters and VBM ballot applications to “unaffiliated and inactive voters,” citing coronavirus-related concerns.

Notably, Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter said the PDF proof, which Reliance sent over ahead of printing and distribution, posed no issue. However, Reliance President Bob Fetterly called the mistake a “human error but would not elaborate on what exactly happened or why the error only affected 500 to 700 Bernardsville Republicans,” according to NJ.

Democrats Hold Sizable Lead in Florida Vote-by-Mail Enrollment
Democrats are holding a sizeable lead in vote-by-mail enrollment in Florida, leading Republicans by over 300,000 voters, according to Division of Election data released last week.
Current data shows Democrats enjoying a sizeable advantage, enrolling 1.46 million Democrats for vote-by-mail. Republicans, meanwhile, have 1.16 million signed up. According to Politico, Democrats “held an advantage of about 8,800 in vote-by-mail enrollment” in 2016. The news could signal trouble for the Trump campaign, which narrowly secured the Sunshine State in the last election, winning by less than 113,000 votes.
Democrats, both nationwide and in Florida, specifically, have been encouraging voters to apply for absentee ballots, citing concerns related to the novel coronavirus. However, Republicans, including the president and Attorney General William Barr, have warned against vote-by-mail on a large scale due to the increased risk of voter fraud.
The Democrat PAC Priorities USA filed a lawsuit last month against Florida officials, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), demanding changes to provisions to make vote-by-mail easier for November’s election.

The PAC joined others, including the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and Alianza for Progress, in challenging certain provisions they believe makes it more difficult for voters to mail in a ballot. They argue that November’s election will bring what Politico described as an “unprecedented spike in demand for mail-in ballots and a reduction of poll workers and elections staff,” citing coronavirus-related concerns.
The groups specifically take aim at the deadline for mail-in ballots, contending that officials should count ballots postmarked by Election Day. They also view the basic requirement for postage as too burdensome. That, in itself, “amounts to a poll tax,” and the “voter assistance ban imposes unreasonable restrictions on speech and the right of association,” Politico explained.
Dozens of Florida election supervisors of both political parties are fighting back, worried that the demands could complicate the state’s handling of the process, which has been under national scrutiny on more than one occasion.
“These late in the day attacks on deadlines are detrimental to operating fair and impartial elections,” said Broward County Supervisor of Elections Peter Antonacci. “We rely on deadlines.”
In addition to deadlines, Polk County Supervisor Lori Edwards also expressed concerns over ballot harvesting.
“I hope the rest of the world is ready to wait for Florida to give its results,” Edwards said, according to Politico.
As Politico reported this month, one motion to dismiss stated that “the burdens and uncertainties of such election-eve legal warfare do not promote, but threaten the smooth and orderly conduct of Florida’s elections.'”
Democrats have largely viewed the coronavirus pandemic as an opportunity to bring their vote-by-mail agenda to the forefront, contending that voters should not have to risk their health to vote in November’s presidential election. However, recent data has not shown a compelling public health justification for vote-by-mail. Only a few dozen people who participated in Wisconsin’s April 7 in-person election later confirmed to have contracted the virus. That was out of 413,000 participants total, equaling an infection rate below two-hundredths of one percent. What is more, some of those who tested positive revealed other ways they may have been exposed to the virus.
President Trump warned of widespread vote-by-mail fraud during an address at Tuesday’s Turning Point USA student convention in Phoenix.
“No, mail-in ballots is a disaster for our country. It’s going to end up in a big fight. You know, look–look, just forget about all of this stuff. Forget about speeches and teleprompters and all of that. They send out millions of ballots. Who’s getting them? How are they delivered? Who is not getting them?” he asked. “Think of it. It’s going to be fraud all over the place.”
“With mail-in ballots, you introduce something in the middle of an election year and you have something where it’s very complex. You have no time to fix this very complex process,” he continued.
“It’s very complex. This will be, in my opinion, the most corrupt election in the history of our country and we cannot let this happen. They want it to happen so badly,” he added, clarifying that absentee ballots are “fine”:

DHS: 95 Percent of Border Crossers Instantly Deported Thanks to CDC’s Title 42 Order

About 95 percent of border crossers apprehended by United States Border Patrol agents are being instantly deported to their native countries thanks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Title 42 order.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan told lawmakers on Thursday that the CDC order, which gives federal immigration officials broad authority to immediately return border crossers over public health concerns, has been hugely beneficial in reducing illegal immigration. Morgan said:
Early on, after [the CDC] order, we saw those trying to illegally enter our country drop by more than 50 percent from our pre-COVID numbers. Rather than introducing the illegal aliens into our facilities, increasing the exposure risk to our workforce and our country, CBP because of this order is returning approximately 95 percent of those we encounter expeditiously to their country of last transit.
Morgan continued:
Can you imagine what we’d be going through right now if we were going through this pandemic this same time last year when our southwest border facilities were overwhelmed and overcrowded with families and children.
At the peak of illegal immigration levels in the two years, Morgan said the agency had more than 20,000 foreign nationals in their custody. Today, the number of foreign nationals in CBP custody on any given day has been cut down to 150 to 200 — a 900 percent reduction.
Likewise, Morgan said the total number of unaccompanied minors — who can be freed into the U.S. — crossing illegally has been reduced by about 70 percent.
In recent weeks, President Trump has implemented significant reforms to the nation’s immigration system to ensure that the more than 40 million unemployed or underemployed Americans are given priority for blue-collar and white-collar job openings.
Aside from the CDC order, Trump’s reforms have included suspending a series of foreign visa worker programs to reduce labor market competition against Americans, as well as regulatory changes to close outsourcing loopholes in the H-1B visa program and ending work permits for most border crossers claiming asylum.
The reforms are expected to free up nearly 600,000 U.S. jobs for Americans.
