Gov. Newsom: Imperial County needs to reinstate stay-at-home order

SACRAMENTO, Calif. โ€”

Gov. Gavin Newsom said that Imperial County in Southern California โ€“ which has seen a positivity rate of 23% over the last 14 days โ€” is being told to pull back on reopening and reinstate the stay-at-home order.

Dr. Sonia Angell, the state health director, said that the high positivity rate likely means thereโ€™s many undetected cases in the area.

Imperial County, with a population of 175,000 people on the stateโ€™s border with Mexico, has been the slowest in the state to reopen amid continued high positivity rates.

It's one of 15 counties that are on the state's coronavirus watch list. Three different factors trigger a county being placed on the state's COVID-19 watch list: elevated disease transmission, increasing hospitalization and limited hospital capacity.

Hereโ€™s some of the new data Newsom has highlighted:

5.3% positivity rate in the last 14 days

4,890 new cases in the past day. 79 deaths.

Over 77,000 people tested in last 24 hours

3.3% increase in COVID-19 hospitalization rate increase in past 14 days

4.4% increase in COVID-19 ICU admissions over 14 days
