Florida cop reassigned after suggesting Parkland shooting was a hoax

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A Florida police officer has been reassigned after he appeared to suggest on social media that a school shooting that left 17 people dead was a hoax, officials said Monday.

North Miami Beach police announced on Twitter that Officer Ericson Harrell was placed on administrative duty with pay pending an internal review.

The Sun Sentinel first reported that a March 29 Facebook post under Harrell’s name asked, “What proof do you have? What evidence do you have, that anyone was killed other than #MSM accounts, alleged witnesses and a couple of funeral processions? #StonemanDouglas #SandyHook.” #MSM is a common hashtag on Twitter that stands for “mainstream media.”

The post was referring to the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Similar hoax theories circulated following the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 20 students, six staff members, the shooter’s mother and the shooter himself dead in Connecticut.

Another post under Harrell’s name, on March 22, referred to five of the school’s students featured on a Time magazine cover as “ALL PAID ACTORS/ACTRESSES!!”

Shortly after the Parkland shooting, some right-wing groups began spreading false information on social media that several vocal shooting survivors were crisis actors, not actual high school students.

A Sunday post on Harrell’s account acknowledged the investigation.

“Well, if you haven’t heard already, I’ll be standing in front of the man because of my questioning the Parkland narrative!!” the post said.

No one from the police union that represents Harrell responded to a telephone message seeking comment.

Cop gets reassigned after comments about Parkland massacre; review underway

A police officer has been removed from road patrol while he’s being investigated in connection with Facebook posts that suggested the Parkland school massacre could be a hoax, police said Monday.

North Miami Beach police Officer Ericson Harrell has been reassigned to administrative restricted duty with pay, until the police department’s investigation is over, said police spokesman Maj. Richard Rand.

One of the Facebook posts under the name of Harrell asked, “What proof do you have? What evidence do you have, that anyone was killed other than #MSM accounts, alleged witnesses and a couple of funeral processions?”

The department’s internal-affairs investigation began Friday after inquiries from the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Harrell could not be reached for comment Monday, though the Facebook page with his name on it acknowledged this weekend that his department is reviewing the matter.

“Well, if you haven't heard already, I'll be standing in front of the man because of my questioning the the [sic] Parkland narrative!!” the Facebook entry said.

A March 22 Facebook post referred to the five Parkland students featured on the cover of Time magazine as “paid actors/actresses,” including student Cameron Kasky.

Kasky’s father, Jeff Kasky, said he was friends with Harrell two decades ago. Kasky, an attorney who is also a certified police officer, said Harrell was the class leader in his police academy class in 1998.

Kasky said Harrell served as a Marine who was a “talented person.”

“I am disappointed that my old friend has fallen into this conspiracy theory subculture,” Jeff Kasky said Monday. “He is smarter than that, and he knows how to reach me if he wants to talk to confirm that my child is indeed a real person and not a paid actor.”

Did anyone think to publish the whole article for those of us who have timed out on their free peaks for the month. I might be able to help out and discern via the article if I could read it.

Cohen would only know there was a fire in the building if he had some kind of app on his phone that would alert him or he was there when the alarm went off.

Why he would be concerned for a friend 8 floors underneath, doesn't make sense since the fire would most likely burn upwards. And not down where his friend lived.
