ClandesTime 132 – The Secret World of Tom Clancy Part III: US Intelligence

Aside from Ian Fleming, there is no more influential spy author than Tom Clancy. Clancy’s books (and the films and computer games based on them) benefited from his close contact with the US government. This week we shed light on his relationships with the CIA and the NSA, and ask whether the CIA’s public affairs office was giving Clancy ideas, or Clancy was giving the CIA ideas, or both.

We have previously explored Tom Clancy’s relationships with the US government, including how the CIA produced their own in-house version of The Hunt for Red October. If you want to go back and refresh your memory, or listen for the first time, episodes 074 and 075 have a lot of good information in them.

But that was nearly two years ago and in the meantime new information has become available, namely the CIA’s CREST database, some documents from my own FOIA requests and a video of one of Clancy’s presentations at the NSA. So we’re going to look at all this and re-examine the ongoing question of whether Clancy was some kind of asset for US intelligence. I doubt we’ll ever get a conclusive answer to that question, but given his popularity and influence I think it’s a question worth coming back to in light of this new evidence.

Covid-19 and voter-suppression: why this week’s US primaries were a warning

Delays, mail-vote mistrust and polling station cuts all bode ill for November’s presidential race.

Earlier this week, Kentucky, New York, and Virginia held primary elections. These were significant for two reasons. The first is that they ushered in some real, and really substantive, change. In New York, for example, House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Eliot Engel appears to have been ousted by Jamaal Bowman, a progressive former school principal. And in Kentucky, at time of writing, Charles Booker, who is black and proudly progressive, has a narrow lead over Amy McGrath, a moderate white woman and fundraising powerhouse; the two are running to be the Democratic candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

But the results were not the only important element to emerge from the primaries. The challenges that people faced trying to cast their votes this past Tuesday are not only concerning in and of themselves, but also because it all bodes ill for a certain Tuesday this November.

Does Bill Clinton Run Murder Inc.?

Last week on TheToday Show, Linda Tripp declared that she had received “threats to my life, threats to the lives of my children” from the president (via Monica Lewinsky). Similarly, Dick Morris referred last month in the Washington Post to “the list of the 25 people who have died in mysterious circumstances in connection with [the Ken Starr] investigation.” Does the president’s scandal-management team include a hit squad? Who allegedly has been bumped off? Are any of the charges true?

Lists of supposed Clinton victims have circulated on the Internet web for the past few years. (Click here to see one list.) The lists may have originated with The Clinton Chronicles, a video produced in 1993 and since hawked by conservatives such as Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh, and Jerry Falwell. The Chronicles explain that as governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton supervised a drug-smuggling and money-laundering enterprise that stretched from Central America to the Reagan-administration’s CIA to west Arkansas. The video alleges that eight people were killed because they knew too much about the operation.
