John Wayne played different characters in his movies. They were all played by John Wayne, that's why there is similarity to them all.
That was his brand.
America loved/loves JW because of what he stood for as a person. So even his bad guy characters still garnered respect.
If he was a bad guy, well, people at the time had no idea. And if he wasn't (I'm not convinced he was anything other than tangentially and incidentally connected to fuckers who used him to do their own bad shit), then smearing the guy for no reason is just a dick move.
