Iran reveals cause of powerful explosion in Tehran
BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:20 P.M.) – The Iranian Ministry of Defense announced that the blast heard in eastern Tehran last night was caused by the explosion of a natural gas warehouse in the Parchin region.
“The emergency teams have started to put out the fire caused by the explosion of the industrial gas tank in the eastern part of the capital, Tehran,” the Iranian Defense Ministry spokesman Brigadier Amir Abdi said Friday in a statement.
Abdi stressed, “There are no casualties because of the explosion of the industrial gas tank in eastern Tehran.”
Earlier, Iranian media said that a huge explosion rocked the area east of the Iranian capital.
According to the Iranian Mehr News Agency, a big explosion was heard in eastern Tehran, followed by an orange light in the sky.

US names North Korea worst human trafficking nation for 18th year
The U.S. State Department on Thursday designated North Korea as one of the worst human trafficking nations for the 18th consecutive year.
The department's annual Trafficking in Persons Report said the North Korean government did not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and did not make significant efforts to do so, leaving it in the lowest category of Tier 3.
"During the reporting period, there was a government policy or pattern of forced labor in mass mobilizations of adults and children, in prison camps as part of an established system of political repression, in labor training centers, and through its imposition of forced labor conditions on DPRK overseas contract workers," the report said, referring to North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
"It used proceeds from state-sponsored forced labor to fund government functions, as well as other illicit activity. The government did not demonstrate any efforts to address human trafficking," it added.

N. Korea's decision to suspend military action plans against S. Korea 'positive' sign: official
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's recent decision to suspend military action plans against South Korea is a "positive sign," a unification ministry official said Thursday, hoping that it could serve as a starting point for easing tensions and improving cross-border relations.
Kim held a preliminary meeting of the ruling party's Central Military Commission on Tuesday and decided to call off military action plans that North Korea had taken against South Korea in anger over the sending of anti-Pyongyang leaflets into the communist nation.
The move came as a surprise given that Pyongyang has vowed to take a series of retaliatory steps, including military action against the South over the leafleting issue, raising questions about the reasons for the changed stance.
"The North's move to suspend military action plans at such a critical point is positive behavior," the ministry official told reporters on condition of anonymity. "Such a change could be seen as the beginning of a positive signal."
"We hope both Koreas can improve their relations and discuss issues of mutual concerns through dialogue," he added.

US remains focused on denuclearizing North Korea: Pentagon official
The United States remains focused on denuclearizing North Korea amid Pyongyang's increased provocations against Seoul, a senior Pentagon official said Wednesday.
David Helvey, acting assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, said the North's recent actions underscored the importance of maintaining a strong readiness posture between Washington and Seoul, with Pyongyang threatening to take military action before suspending such plans on Wednesday.
"Korea remains the hardest of hard targets," he said during a virtual seminar hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "It's hard to determine tactically what North Korea is going to do on a day to day basis, even though I think we'd all agree that strategically, North Korea, particularly under Kim Jong-un, is very predictable and understandable."
Helvey said the Department of Defense has worked to maintain an effective deterrent in support of the diplomatic efforts aimed at the "final and fully verified denuclearization" of the North.
"Our policy, as I've said, remains very much focused on denuclearization," he said. "It's a denuclearization that we believe can only realistically be obtained through a diplomatic process. I mean, that's certainly our strong, strong preference."

World Bank dismisses BOK's optimism
The World Bank seemingly agrees with recent warnings the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sent to the Bank of Korea (BOK) over the central bank's "quite optimistic" position on the country's growth outlook.
Carmen Reinhart, the chief economist at the international financial institution, said in a pre-recorded speech for the Institute for Global Economics (IGE) conference held Friday that it could take up to six years for the world economy to regain per capita income it had before the COVID-19 pandemic.
"One distinction that I'd like to make is ― let's not confuse rebound with recovery," she said. "For the U.S. in 2008 and 2009, it took five years to get back the pre-crisis per capital income, and for Europe, it took much longer."
The economist claimed it was difficult to expect a swift (or V-shaped) recovery from the current crisis, taking a cautious assessment toward global economic forecasts.
The remarks were seen as a contrast to those of BOK Governor Lee Ju-yeol, who considered the IMF's latest adjustment of the country's growth outlook as "immoderate."

Stone, 67, is a former Trump campaign adviser who in November was convicted of lying and witness tampering in a congressional investigation.
Stone has been out on bail since his sentencing in February.
He had been scheduled to start serving his 40-month sentence in April, but that date was pushed back to June 30.

NORAD F-22s intercept 4 Russian spy planes off Alaskan coast
June 27 (UPI) – North American Aerospace Defense Command aircraft intercepted four Russian Tu-142 spy planes entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone on Saturday.
According to NORAD, U.S. F-22s, with assistance from KC-135 air refuelers and E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System, intercepted the Tu-142s, which came within 65 nautical miles of the Aleutian island chain off the coast of Alaska and "loitered in the ADIZ for nearly 8 hours."
The planes remained in international airspace and did not fly into U.S. or Canadian airspace.
The interception marks the second incidence of a Russian aircraft near the U.S. border this week and the 10th this year, with multiple incidents taking place this month near the coast of Alaska.

WATCH: US Postal Worker Caught on Video Throwing Stack of GOP Congressional Candidate Campaign Mailers in Dumpster
A US Postal worker was caught on video throwing a stack of GOP congressional candidate campaign mailers in a dumpster.
Sheriff Troy Nehls is running for Texas Congressional District 22.
Mr. Nehls is a pro-Trump conservative, a church-going family man, tough on crime and tough on border security.
No wonder why the left is trying to derail his campaign.
“A US Postal worker was just caught on video throwing a stack of my campaign mailers in a dumpster. Some patriots nearby heard a noise when she tossed them in & went to investigate. They found a stack of them and called me. No wonder people are skeptical of mail in voting.” Sheriff Nehls said.

Bill Barr forms task force to address "anti-government extremists"
Attorney General Bill Barr announced Friday he will create a task force to address "anti-government extremists," as protests continue over police brutality and systemic racism.
Why it matters: The establishment of the task force further escalates federal law enforcement's response to violence that sometimes emerges amid otherwise peaceful demonstrations.
What he's saying: "Among other lawless conduct, these extremists have violently attacked police officers and other government officials, destroyed public and private property, and threatened innocent people," Barr wrote.
"Although these extremists profess a variety of ideologies, they are united in their opposition to the core constitutional values of a democratic society governed by law. …Some pretend to profess a message of freedom and progress, but they are in fact forces of anarchy, destruction, and coercion."
