Anyway this is an a close notes but what you said made me think of one of the passages in the book where they talk about the psychology of decision making.

There are two systems one is the emotional irrational system and then the other one is the logical factual system.

Over years and years of different negotiations they found that if they could buy themselves time with the hostage takers decisions were more reasoned and more logical
