NWSL Players Kneel During National Anthem

Players for the Portland Thorns and the North Carolina Courage knelt during the national anthem Saturday when the National Women’s Soccer League opened the Challenge Cup tournament in Utah.

The players and coaches wore Black Lives Matter T-shirts in warmups before the game, which was nationally televised on CBS. The players also knelt during a moment of silence before kickoff.

“We took a knee today to protest racial injustice, police brutality and systemic racism against Black people and people of color in America. We love our country and we have taken this opportunity to hold it to a higher standard. It is our duty to demand that the liberties and freedoms this nation was founded upon are extended to everyone,” the Thorns and Courage said in a joint statement released before the game.

The league confirmed the day before that it would play the national anthem before the Challenge Cup games and that it would support the players in whatever they chose to do.

During the late match between the Red Stars and the Washington Spirit a few players remained standing. There was a touching moment when Chicago’s Julie Ertz consoled teammate Casey Short, who was overcome by emotion.

The NWSL is the first professional team sport in the United States to return amid the coronavirus outbreak. The monthlong Challenge Cup is being played without fans at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.

“Today, hopefully, it was a powerful statement,” Courage midfielder Sam Mewis said after her team defeated the Thorns 2-1. “It was an emotional time and I hope that both teams’ message comes through clearly.”

Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn said: “The (players’ association) has been about collaborating with teams on what we can do to maintain and sustain the conversation around racial injustice in this country.

“We made a strong statement and we wanted to kind of maintain that momentum that has been happening and to show official commitment to the cause,” she added.

Megan Rapinoe, who plays for OL Reign but opted out of the Challenge Cup, was criticized when she knelt at an NWSL game and a pair of U.S. national team games in 2016. She said she wanted to express solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the anthem to bring attention to racial inequality.

In response, U.S. Soccer adopted a rule that required players to stand. But that rule was repealed earlier this month amid nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd and racial inequity.

Rapinoe voiced her support for the NWSL players Saturday on social media: “You love to see these women using their voice, demanding better for America, and for black people and people of color.”

Spirit Coach Richie Burke joined his players in kneeling before the late game.

“I’m grateful for everything this country has given me, but I feel the need to support the Black Lives Matter movement because I know this privilege isn’t the same for everyone. This is just the start. There is much more work to be done,” Burke said.

Mewis said the teams will continue to call attention to racial injustice throughout the Challenge Cup.

“I think we want to keep this momentum and keep the attention on the Black Lives Matter movement throughout this tournament,” she said.

It’s not about Trump: Berlin says relations with US are so bad even Democrats back in White House cannot fix them

The days of the good old ‘transatlantic partnership’ have passed, Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has admitted, adding that even the Democrats returning to power is unlikely to automatically bring those days back.

“Anyone, who believes that the transatlantic partnership will once again be what it once was with a Democratic president, underestimates the structural changes,” the minister told German news agency dpa, hinting that relations between the two allies will never be the same even without President Donald Trump at the helm in Washington.

Still, he also admitted that Berlin is not ready to give up on its longstanding alliance with Washington just yet. “The transatlantic relations are extraordinarily important, they will remain important and we are working to make sure they have a future,” he said.

Relations between the two NATO allies have indeed soured under Trump’s presidency to the point that the German media started referring to Berlin as the “favorite adversary” of the American leader. Trump repeatedly castigated Berlin over its failure to meet the two-percent defense expenditure threshold under its NATO obligations.

Most recently, he decided to pull almost 10,000 out of 34,500 US troops currently stationed in Germany, adding that he would not bring them back until Berlin pays its “delinquent” NATO bills.

Washington also repeatedly clashed with Berlin over the fate of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline – a project supported by Germany that the US seemingly sought to bring down at any cost.

A 25 percent steel tariff and a 10 percent aluminum tariff Trump imposed on the EU which severely affected Germany’s car industry did not make relations between the two any better either. Neither did Washington’s threats to slap imported cars with tariffs, which German Chancellor Angela Merkel called “a real threat to the prosperity of many in the world.” She also warned that Europe should be ready for a reality without the US as a world power.

COVID-19 Cases and Percentage of Positive Tests Up in Texas, Florida, and Arizona, Deaths Down in Florida

COVID-19 cases in the states of Texas, Florida, and Arizona increased over the two weeks and three days between June 9 and June 26.

The percentage of those who tested positive for COVID-19 is also up over the past two weeks and three days in all three states.

COVID-19 deaths have declined for three consecutive weeks in Florida. Reported COVID-19 deaths declined in the most recent week in both Texas and Arizona, after seeing an increase over the three preceding weeks, though that decline may be due to reporting lags.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 remain unchanged in Florida, but are up in Texas and Arizona, where there are significant differences by region within each state.

As a result of the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday rolled back some of the re-opening measures in their respective states, ordering bars to close.

The ratio between those who have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past two weeks in Texas, Florida, and Arizona and hospitalizations and deaths in those states during that time is far lower than the ratio between COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations and deaths observed in New York and New Jersey in April when those two states were the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

The dramatic difference appears to be related to the fact that the number of cases have increased among younger people, who are less likely to require hospitalization and have much lower mortality rates.

Maxine Waters: Trump Wants Black People ‘to Live Under the Domination of White Power’

Sunday on MSNBC, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) discussed President Donald Trump’s retweeting of a video this morning of an apparent supporter shouting “white power.”

Host Alex Witt said, “So let’s get to the tweet. It has been removed from the president’s Twitter feed. The White House is saying the president did not hear the one statement that we just highlighted until the video, but what is your reaction? Do you think the president was willfully pushing an agenda, or would he be unaware of what is being said there eight seconds into the video.”

Waters said, “Well, you know, we have learned a lot about this president. And so it’s not believable what he said he did not hear it. As a matter of fact, since he’s been president and increasingly we’re hearing all kinds of racist comments. People, the white men who just did that, they felt empowered by this president, that it is all right to do this now, to talk like this. So he’s responsible for the growing division, the more racist comments that we are hearing.”

She continued, “Not only blacks but all Americans should be concerned that this outpouring of racism and talks of killing and violence is not good for this country. So this country cannot progress as long as this president is in office and basically dog-whistling to this kind of constituency and having them feel it is all right. That they have the White House and they’ve got the president of the United States who is with them. And so it is more than concerning. It is absolutely outrageous that we’re now living in a time when the president of the united states of America is responsible for this kind of division.”

Waters added, “When we have a president like Trump, what you have is people thinking too many thinking this is okay to do. This is all right for me to talk like this. I was right all along. If the president is saying it and acting it out and encouraging me, then what I’ve known all along, what I’ve been taught, what I’ve lived with is right.”

She concluded, “As he said, we have to take back our country. Who he is talking about taking it back from? Basically, he’s talking about whites being in total power, and total control and blacks and people of color and others are having to live under the domination of white power as they see it.”

'This is happening every day and it's like manure': Inside the hacking attacks bombarding Australia

I'm sitting at the kitchen table, staring at my laptop screen and watching red dots pulse on a map of the world.

Each represents a cyber attack underway on one of 12 strategically-placed "honeypots'", but not the kind Winnie The Pooh would seek out. These attackers are being lured by online sensors that are rigged to appear like computers loaded with the kind of information a cyber-criminal might go for.

As I watch, one or two red dots becomes 10, then 20, 30, until I lose count. At the bottom of the screen a list of attempted "new attacks" grows longer: Ireland to Australia, China to Australia, Russia to Australia.

Behind every one of these throbbing red dots sits a cyber criminal — maybe someone hidden in plain sight, perhaps stationed at his or her own kitchen table just down the road from me.

Or, the dot could represent a team of cyber criminals concealed in a high-security office building anywhere in the world, launching attacks on another country's information systems on behalf of a nation state.

But who are these people? Who is directing them? What are they after? And most important of all — how can they be stopped?

Facebook Ad Boycott Organizers Want Companies in Europe, Asia to Join Campaign

Over 160 mostly US companies have already joined the ‘Stop Hate for Profit’ campaign in the wake of George Floyd’s death, with corporations including Coca Cola, Levi’s, Starbucks, and Verizon agreeing to partially or fully freeze their Facebook ad buys next month, ostensibly to try to force the social media giant to tackle hateful content online.

Common Sense Media, one of several US-based civil rights NGOs pressuring Facebook to change its rules to address hate speech, is seeking to expand its viral ‘Stop Hate for Profit’ campaign to Europe and Asia.

Speaking to Reuters, James Steyer, CEO of the San Francisco-based non-profit, said “the next frontier” following the successful lobbying of corporations in the US is “global pressure,” with major European and Asian companies including Unilever and Honda to be pressed to freeze their Facebook ads globally, not just those running in the US.

According to Steyer, Common Sense Media and its fellow social justice warriors from the Anti-Defamation League, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Color of Change and others are showing their frustration over Facebook’s alleged failure to address hate speech and misinformation online.

On Friday, Facebook introduced new tools to label hate speech from politicians, but rights groups have dismissed the measures as not being strong enough. On Sunday, the social media giant promised to work with rights groups and policy experts to target alleged hate speech more aggressively, with the company’s AI systems already said to allow it to find and remove nine-tenths of hate speech before it is reported by users.

According to Reuters, Stop Hate for Profit is demanding measures including a special moderation process, a halt in ad revenue generation from racist or hateful content, and more transparency from the company on the number of hate speech incidents it deals with.

Facebook depends on companies large and small for generating as much as $70 billion per year through targeted ad revenue, with big corporations making up about ¼ of that.

Slippery Slope?

While met with a mostly positive response, the Stop Hate for Profit initiative has also raised concerns in some quarters about censorship and free speech, with fears that a campaign with nothing but the best of intentions may degenerate into censoring all kinds of content, depending on who is imbued with the authority to do the censoring.

As coronavirus cases spike nationally, Black Lives Matter plans more rallies, marches

Some public officials have halted reopening their states as cases have gone up.

Though coronavirus cases are surging in some parts of the United States, many Black Lives Matter activists are nonetheless planning sizable rallies in the near future, defying public health concerns in favor of continuing what has become a month-long streak of aggressive public activism.

The surge in coronavirus cases in some parts of the country — especially Texas, Arizona and Florida — has brought with it renewed fears that any form of reopening states after months of lockdowns will bring a new wave of COVID-19 infections.

The governors of Texas and Florida imposed fresh restrictions on residents this week in response to rising cases in their states, while other governors such as Washington's Jay Inslee mandated that all state residents must wear face masks while out in public.

In spite of those mounting concerns, multiple chapters of Black Lives Matter across the country are still planning rallies and marches, even as officials urge residents to refrain from gathering in large groups.

'Community visioning, education, and mobilization'

One chapter, Black Lives Matter Michigan, is hosting a "protest & rally" at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing on Monday. That event promises "community visioning, education, and mobilization to #DefendBlackLives." Its Facebook page shows nearly 600 confirmed attendees and 2,800 "interested" in attending,

The event urges attendees to create signs with slogans on them such as "defund the police," "invest the funds in the Black community," and "declare racism a public health emergency in Michigan."

In Minneapolis, meanwhile, a consortium of groups including the Chicago chapter of Black Lives Matter, has planned for a July 12 rally called the "National Mother's March." The group specifically invites "families (mothers, fathers, grandmothers, Aunts, Uncles, sisters, brothers spouses, significant others anyone) that have lost loved ones to police violence" to attend.

An "educational gathering" taking place that weekend will offer participants a host of workshops on subjects such as "the history and role of the police in US society;" "tools for organizing against police violence;" "DO’s and DON’T’s of organizing for families dealing with a more recent loss of a loved one;" and numerous other topics.

In Philadelphia on Sunday, a "Rally for Political Prisoners" will take place in the city's Malcolm X Park. That event, which will be co-hosted by Black Lives Matter Philly and six other groups, has just over 200 confirmed attendees, though nearly 1,000 more are "interested" in going.

The rally will "center the lives and stories of our Political Prisoners in Pennsylvania and incarcerated people as we struggle to defund the police, dismantle the Fraternal Order Police and Abolish Policing," the Facebook event states.

Citing the recent removal of former Philadelphia mayor and police commissioner Frank Rizzo, the description continues: "Now that the statue has been brought down, let's bring home [Rizzo's] victims."

A spokeswoman for Black Lives Matter Philly said the group "ask[s] participant to wear masks at every action we plan."

"We actively pass out masks, sanitizer, and wear gloves when we distribute items," she said. "We're very aware and cautious about risk with COVID-19."

She added that one of the group's supporters recently mailed the activists 500 masks to pass out to participants at rallies and marches.

On July 4, meanwhile, Black Lives Matter Boston will host an event called the "Say Her Name March & Rally."

Sexual abuse, assault run rampant through $1.6 billion HHS program for illegal immigrants

Watchdog report details 761 instances of inappropriate sexual behavior occurring at taxpayer funded facilities.

The Golden Horseshoe is a weekly designation from Just the News intended to highlight egregious examples of wasteful taxpayer spending by the government. The ward is named for the horseshoe-shaped toilet seats for military airplanes that cost the Pentagon a whopping $640 each back in the 1980s.

This week, our award is going to the Department of Health and Human Services for spending $1.6 billion on a program to house and protect unauthorized minors rescued from violent Central American countries, but failing to protect those minors from sexual misconduct at U.S. government facilities.

The Unoccupied Alien Children Program (UAC) is designed to serve minors who have no lawful immigration status in the United States and do not have a parent or legal guardian available to provide care and physical custody. It is a program within HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement. The UAC program receives upwards of $1.5 billion in federal taxpayer dollars every year and cares for about 50,000 minors.

An HHS inspector general report from June of this year, details the abuses taking place in 45 of these 170 state-licensed care facilities funded through the UAC program to take care of the minors when they arrive from foreign countries. Some of the results of the inspector general investigation led to criminal convictions of facility employees.

The investigation, which took place over a six-month period in early 2018 yielded 761 instances of inappropriate sexual behavior, sexual harassment, or sexual abuse.

Furthermore, the UAC program does not report or track, in any meaningful way, incidents of sexual abuse or assault. One employee of a taxpayer-funded facility was convicted of sexually abusing seven minors, although, the great majority of the reported incidents involved contact between minors, as opposed to between staffers and minors.

“Important information about facilities’ actions are not systematically collected to help ORR determine whether facilities responded appropriately to incidents," the report found. "The system does not effectively capture information in a way that allows for efficient identification of issues that require immediate attention and analysis to detect concerning trends."

This is not HHS’s first serious transgression when it comes to their UAC program. During the Obama administration, when tens of thousands of underage, unauthorized individuals were brought to the United States, the agency put thousands of minors in abusive homes. Having fled violence in Central America, some of them were thrown back into the worlds of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Hispanic YouTuber Posts Disturbing Video Saying “We Need To Kill White People”

60 Minutes reveals details of ASIO investigation into alleged Chinese interference plot of NSW politics

An investigation by 60 Minutes, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspaper has confirmed that Labor MP Shaoquett Moselmane's office is now the centre of the most serious ASIO counter foreign interference operation since the Cold War.

ASIO are investigating the allegation that, whether knowingly or unknowingly, Moselmane is potentially being influenced by the Chinese government.

No allegations have been proven. It is also possible that Mr Moselmane may only be an unwitting victim of a Chinese government influence operation.

In an early morning raid on Friday, a dozen Australian Federal Police Officers searched Mr Moselmane's house and his cars, because ASIO fear his political office may have been infiltrated by China.

The AFP raids were aimed at finding evidence on phones and laptops that could be used to prove that Beijing was intent on infiltrating New South Wales politics.

The reaction to the raid was swift and within hours the Australian Labor Party moved to suspend Moselmane.

Intelligence expert Neil Fergus says the ASIO investigation is unprecedented and that the agency would not take this step lightly.

"There is no place for someone in our parliaments if they are taking instructions from a foreign power," Fergus told 60 Minutes.

Radicalism in America's largest cities seems impervious to reason.

Consider this headline in the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "Despite a wave of violence, Minneapolis 'defund police' effort continues: An influential bloc of City Council members is pressing ahead with plans to dismantle the department as a monthlong eruption of gunfire sent tremors through neighborhoods."

Reporter Liz Navratil explained that a majority of the Minneapolis City Council and like-minded community activists have used terms such as "defund," "dismantle" and "abolish" in different ways.

There's some semantic tap-dancing. But they're serious. They're working to rewrite the city charter and dismantle a "minimum size requirement" for the police department. They talk about a police-free future.

A protester named Maisah Outlaw insisted: "This isn't the first time an institution that is rooted in racism has been abolished. It's not impossible." She claimed, "We don't need to scare people and beat people into submission."

Who's going to be scared and beaten after the police go away?

The radicals behind this movement don't just tweet about abolishing the police. They also talk about abolishing prisons. If violence is the problem, how is emptying prisons the solution? What next? Abolish the courts?

These activists seem to think only police officers commit the kind of violence worth protesting. Prosecuting violent crimes like burglary, rape and murder is apparently racist. Conversation about Black-on-Black crime is treated like a distraction employed by racists.

The radical experiment is coming. Cities will send social workers instead of police officers to deal with domestic violence complaints and drug overdoses.

One has to wonder if this is really the kind of stance people will support at reelection time. But it seems the pendulum only swings further to the left.

Democrats have gotten reelected for decades on end to run big American cities. Many mayors and police chiefs are minorities. If "systemic racism" is rampant in America, how does that explain the systemic progressivism that keeps failing?

In the meantime, people who commit crimes are acting. With at least 113 people injured or killed in shootings since George Floyd's death on May 25, some locals are "asking urgent new questions" about the potential effects of defunding the police, the Star Tribune reports. Do these elected officials fail to imagine what could happen if you were to "dismantle" the police force? The consequences of their utopian naivete?

Steven Belton, president and CEO of the Urban League Twin Cities, told the Star Tribune he believes all this Defund the Police advocacy "has emboldened criminals and sparked a new wave of violence."

But city council member Steve Fletcher claimed they often don't need armed officers, saying, "It's so much more common that we're showing up (and) the person has already left who has committed the crime."

So, should police officers show up at crime scenes unarmed, assuming the crook fled the scene? That seems to be the suggestion … that is if the cops have jobs in the coming years.
