State-run tabloid Global Times has attracted ridicule after it shared a photo of “spy tools” it claimed were seized from Australian agents.

A report on Sunday – which came during heightened tensions between the two states – said that Canberra was waging an espionage offensive against China.

Among the items seized were USB flash drives, a notebook containing addresses in China, gloves, a metro map of Shanghai, piles of Chinese renminbi and US dollars, and a Geonaute compass. HKFP found that the navigation device currently retails at HK$74 at the Decathalon sportswear store.

Australia angered Beijing after it led a campaign for an international independent investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last month, Beijing enacted trade barriers on Australian goods amid boycott threats and claims of Sinophobia.

President Donald Trump should appoint a special envoy for Nigeria and the Lake Chad region to “focus like a laser beam” on the attacks by Boko Haram and other Islamic militants, according to one of the main architects of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.

Former Congressman Frank Wolf said such a move was necessary to stop a genocide of Christians in the region.

Wolf was speaking to journalists during a press call on the situation in Nigeria sponsored by In Defense of Christians, a Washington D.C. human rights group.

During the call, Anglican Archbishop Benjamin Argak Kwashi of Jos described the attacks on Christians in the country.

“This thing is systematic; it is planned; it is calculated,” he said.

The archbishop said Boko Haram has almost succeeded in uprooting the Christian community in northeastern Nigeria, and added it is “very clear that their intention is to Islamize Nigeria.”

“Every time we have raised our voices to say to the governments that this is going on, they always produced a political narrative to say that it is farmers’ and herders’ clashes. That narrative is an evil narrative of cover up because honest people will be sleeping in their homes at night that will be massacred, but it will be said to be a clash. That is far from the truth,” Kwashi said. “These killings are specifically in Christian villages.”

“Denial is part of every genocide; it starts at the beginning of it and usually goes on way after it,” he said.

“Every single person of the 7,600 [people] killed since 2015 by the Fulani militia has been Christian. That’s genocide,” Stanton added.

The Unification Ministry on Monday held a hearing on two North Korean defector-led groups, as the final step before revoking their permits for floating anti-North Korea propaganda materials across the border, in defiance of the government.

The ministry said it held a hearing on Kuensaem, an organization that has sent bottle filled with rice to the North, and Fighters for a Free North Korea, which has floated anti-Pyongyang leaflets.

“(FFNK) has not attended the hearing without a reasonable cause and did not submit an additional opinion,” the ministry said in a statement. “After checking whether there are any additional documents to be submitted, we will proceed with revocation and other related procedures.”

Once their license is revoked, the organizations will not be allowed to publicly raise funds, while donors will not be eligible for various tax benefits, the ministry added.
