European plane maker Airbus is bracing for a huge drop in production, threatening to set development back 15 years, the company’s chief executive, Guillaume Faury, says.
“For the next two years – 2020/21 – we assume that production and deliveries will be 40% lower than originally planned,” the CEO said in an interview with Die Welt newspaper.
The 40-percent cut refers to company’s initial plans for the next two years, meaning that only around 40 aircraft per month will be rolled off the production line.
Lower production also means that Airbus “will return to the level we were at about 10 to 15 years ago,” the CEO said. While the plane maker does not want to significantly change its industrial footprint, it will have to “turn every stone” at its facilities to reduce costs.

As Indian troops remain dug in at Ladakh in a prolonged standoff with China, allies are pitching in with commitments to deliver urgently needed weapons and ammunition for the Indian armed forces. France has promised to deliver additional Rafale jets next month, an in-service Israeli air defence system is expected soon, precision artillery rounds will be sent by the US, and Russia will make early deliveries of ammunition and weapons worth $1 billion.

Before his murder in Istanbul last November, Aierken Saimaiti disclosed a trove of secrets to reporters about his prolific money laundering from Kyrgyzstan on behalf of the Abdukadyrs, a secretive Uighur family.
Those revelations formed the basis of a multipart investigation by RFE/RL, OCCRP, and its Kyrgyz member center, Kloop, that triggered anti-corruption protests in Kyrgyzstan and rattled the Central Asian nation’s political landscape.
But Saimaiti’s murder left several mysteries lingering as well, including the true fate of £5.6 million he said he had sent to the United Kingdom.
One of Saimaiti’s most explosive claims was that this money went toward the purchase of a luxury London apartment for a senior Kyrgyz customs official. The funds, he claimed, were compensation for the official’s facilitation of an illicit cargo empire run by the Abdukadyrs, which made the family millions.
That official, Saimaiti said, was Raimbek Matraimov, who then served as deputy chief of the Kyrgyz Customs Service and who is notorious for his family’s lavish lifestyle, seemingly at odds with the salary of a career public servant.

A court ordered the release of a former Air Force general and leading critic of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from jail on Sunday, a day after hundreds of people protested outside the Israeli leader’s residence calling for him to be freed.
Retired Brig. Gen. Amir Haskel has been a leader of the protest movement against Netanyahu, demanding that the long-time leader step down while facing charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes. Haskel and several others were detained on Friday in what police said was an “illegal” demonstration because the protesters blocked roads.
The arrest of Haskel, a former top Israeli Air Force general, has turned him into a symbol of the protest movement that opposes Netanyahu. Demonstrations have been held regularly around the country, with protesters waving signs reading “crime minister” and calling for Netanyahu to resign.

Ukrainian Health Minister Maksym Stepanov says the number of pneumonia cases in Ukraine has almost doubled compared to May 2020. The Health Ministry in April ordered that all patients with pneumonia should undergo COVID-19 testing. At that moment, about 5,000 pneumonia cases were registered.
"As of May 11, the weekly rate was 2,143 pneumonia cases. As of today, we register over 4,000 pneumonia cases on a weekly basis. Most of them are complications from COVID-19," he said. As Ukraine's State Statistics Service reported, 100,738 people died in Ukraine in the first two months of 2020. Influenza and pneumonia were confirmed causes in 1,326 cases. Since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in Ukraine, the death toll was 1,147 people.

China warned Monday that it would impose visa restrictions on US citizens who had “behaved egregiously” over Hong Kong, ahead of expected approval from Beijing lawmakers for a controversial national security law in the city.
China is moving forward on a security law that would enforce punishment for subversion and other offences in Hong Kong, which was rocked by massive and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests last year.
“To target the US’s above wrongful actions, China has decided to impose visa restrictions against American individuals who have behaved egregiously on matters concerning HK,” Zhao said.
