Not really. Cross bows can be lethal. Also compound bows. And sling shots can be good deterrents. Just practice with them. Better than nothing. Even cans of mace. Anything you can think of that doesn't require a license. I know a guy who trained himself how to use throwing knives & those Chinese throwing star things.
