I don’t think the US views Assad as an enemy. I think the media portrays him in that manner. Which makes us think he is probably a good guy, but things aren’t always black and white. Myriads of shades of gray. He may be good in some aspects, bad in others. It’s like do you know everything good and bad about your neighbor? Are they a good neighbor? Do they treat their family well, do they respect their neighbors?
That would be a good neighbor, but if he is running some kind of illegal scheme at the bank, you would have no idea until they came to arrest him.
I think this may be the same thing here, we don’t know all the details, all the variables. He is fighting ISIS, which that alone makes him a good guy in my book, but so did Solemani. You can do good things but still be a bad person.
Remember that it was mainly Hussein and Hillary that were pushing for wars in the middle east. Trump has effectively pulled back the American war machine in the region much to the dismay of many neocons here.
This makes me think that Trump believes the fight is not with Assad, but one of the numerous other countries fighting proxy wars in the area.
