Meijer suspends cash payments at self-checkout lanes from National cash shortage
Cash payments have been suspended at Meijer self-checkout lanes due to a national shortage of coins according to MLive.com. The report went on to say that Customers who want to pay with cash will have to visit Meijer’s staffed checkout lanes instead. The change has gone in effect at most of Grand Rapids-based retail giant’s 250 supercenters.
The Self-scan lanes will still only accept credit, debit, Bridge, and gift cards according to spokesman Frank Guglielmi. According to the report, The national coin shortage has been a direct result of the economic slowdown related to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury. This means that reduced business activity means smaller amounts of cash, including coins, are circulating through the economy.
