Since late2006, rising metal prices have driven the costs of producing pennies and nickels above the face values of the coins
Fed Reserve RESPONSE to GAO Study:Louise Roseman: Director Division Of Reserve Bank Operations:
"We agree with the GAO's conclusion that the Reserve Banks are fulfilling depository institutions' coin demand
while generally reducing orders for new coin from the U.S. Mint and inventory levels at the Reserve Banks
We believe that the data presented in the report reflect the Reserve Banks' efficient and effective management of coin inventories."
Various QUOTES on the Current Coin Shortage from Sauced Article Links below ~
"The coins have to be somewhere, it's not like all the pennies and quarters disappeared.
But another part of the issue isnot as many coins are being made"
"The US is facing a coin shortage ~ and it's forcing the Federal Reserve to take the unusual step ofrationing its distribution
"Until the shortage is resolved, the Fed is taking the unusual step of limiting the amount of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies sent to banks "to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of coin inventory.
"So the [U.S.] Mint, they were on their pandemic plan so their staff wasn't there to be able to produce the normal allotment and it really created that perfect coin storm," said Carroll."Banks are helping those customers get the change they need, because even in a world of debit cards and online payments, cash is still very much used and needed.
“This includes managing the allocation of existing Fed inventories, working with the Mint, as issuing authority, to minimize coin supply constraints and maximize coin production capacity, and encouraging depository institutions to order only the coin they need to meet near-term customer demand,” according to the Fed.
“Depository institutions also can help replenish inventories by removing barriers to consumer deposits of loose and rolled coins.'
"We encourage them to use debit, he said. We charge for credit use now. Cash as of now is still fine."
