Father who lost son in CHOP/CHAZ violence wants National Guard deployed to clear it out

'This doesn't look like a protest to me no more'

The father of a teenager who was shot and killed in the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest zone in Seattle said the National Guard needs to come clear out the protesters and end the demonstration, KIRO-TV reported.

Horace Lorenzo Anderson's 19-year-old son was killed in the area last weekend, just one of several young people who have been killed or injured there over the past two weeks.

Early Monday morning, a 16-year-old was killed and a 14-year-old was critically injured when gunfire broke out in the CHOP. City and police officials have called for an end to the occupation of the Capitol Hill area by anti-police protesters after a string of violent incidents, but some people remain. No suspects have been arrested in Monday's shooting

"I ain't been sleeping," Anderson said. "You see my eyes. I've been crying. I'm trying not to cry on TV. … This doesn't look like a protest to me no more. That just looks like they just took over and said we can take over whenever we want to."

Anderson said the National Guard should be deployed to disperse the protest if the city is unwilling or unable to take back control.

"They should deploy them (the National Guard) here to say 'Man, it's time to go,'" Anderson said, according to The Daily Wire. "'It's time to move on. And break this up.'"

The city still hasn't regained control of a police precinct in the Capitol Hill area of the city, and despite repeated calls from Mayor Jenny Durkan and Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best for the protest to end, definitive action to restore order to the area has not been taken. City officials haven't given a timeline for when officers will return to the precinct.

"Enough is enough here," Chief Best said, KING-TV reported. "This is something that's going to need to change. We're asking that people remove themselves from this area for the safety of the people. If they care about people, they're going to have to try to help us to make it safe."

Who is Kimberly Gardner, St. Louis prosecutor investigating gun-toting couple?

Gardner described encounter as “a violent assault” against the protesters

The standoff between a gun-toting couple who stood in their front yard and peaceful protesters who marched through the private neighborhood is under investigation, according to St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner's office.

Gardner, who was elected in 2016 on a platform of reforming the criminal justice system, was reportedly backed by liberal billionaire George Soros.

Since being elected, Gardner has butted heads publicly with Missouri’s Republican attorney general and faced lawsuits for allegedly ignoring public records requests.

More about Gardner's investigation into the St. Louis couple, Soros' campaign support, her feud with the state attorney general and the lawsuits against her office:

Investigation into gun-toting couple

In a statement Monday, Gardner described the encounter between married lawyers Mark and Patricia McCloskey and the protesters as “a violent assault” against those exercising their First Amendment rights.

“I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault,” Gardner said. “We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated.”

She said her office was working with the police department to investigate the confrontation, adding that authorities “will use the full power of Missouri law to hold people accountable.”

No charges were filed against the couple as of Tuesday morning.

Navy to sailors: Please stop buying LSD online

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has a message for America's sailors: Please, for the love of Poseidon and the Seven Seas, stop buying hallucinogens in the dark corners of the Internet.

NCIS last week issued a warning to sailors to the risks of acquiring LSD on the so-called "dark web," the network of often-illicit sites accessible through specialized browsers that offer users "perceived anonymity."

"Recent law enforcement reporting has revealed that an increasing number of people are moving to purchasing illicit substances via the dark web because of the perceived anonymity provided by tools like The Onion Router (TOR)," the NCIS notice reads. "While TOR offers anonymity by obscuring IP addresses, law enforcement use various investigative techniques to identify both purchasers and sellers."

The notice doesn't just address the foolishness of trying to acquire a Schedule 1 narcotic online, but the potential dangers to U.S. service members.

"Drugs purchased via the dark web are often laced with other substances in dangerous combinations that can lead to death," the notice continues. "Additionally, international, federal, state, and local law enforcement are working collectively, using a variety of techniques to infiltrate marketplaces, identify users, and combat the illicit drug threat."

Translation: You might get sick, and you'll almost definitely get caught..

Unfortunately, NCIS has no way of really knowing authoritatively if the service is experiencing an uptick in LSD use: according to the agency, the Navy discontinued LSD testing in 2006 after a three-year span of urinalysis testing revealed only four LSD positives among two million samples.

But the warning, based on "recent law enforcement reporting," comes on the heels of several worrying LSD-related incidents across the U.S. armed forces.

For the Navy in particular, a sailor assigned to the nuclear reactor department aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in March 2019 admitted to "wrongfully" bringing LSD aboard the aircraft carrier while docked at various ports across Japan.

Ten other sailors, all from the same department, had previously faced administrative discipline in 2018 for possessing and distributing LSD in connection to a drug ring aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier.

Loopholes in Right-to-Try Law Still Prevent ALS Patients From Potential Life-Extending Drugs

It’s been two years since President Trump signed the “Right-to-Try” Drug Bill into law. The legislation gave terminally ill patients access to experimental medical treatments yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Despite the opportunities offered by the new law, some patients are still struggling to get access to experimental drugs that are awaiting approval from the FDA that could improve their conditions.

Mike Moutsoulas, a 43-year-old father of three children between the ages of 4 and 7, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the neurodegenerative disease commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in November 2019. He and his sister, Stephenie, 44, who was also diagnosed with ALS back in December 2018, have been fighting to make more promising treatments for the disease available to ALS patients like themselves that loopholes in the Right-to-Try Drug Bill prevent them from having access to.

Mike and Stephenie have a form of the disease that is genetic. Their biological mother and her sister both died of ALS. The disease has a 100 percent fatality rate.

There are currently two bills that would open up access to various treatments that could offer hope to the Moutsoulases and other ALS patients: the Promising Pathway Act, and the Accelerated Access to Critical Therapies (ACT) for ALS Act. While these bills would provide expedited access to new treatments and increase funding for ALS, it could take a year for these bills to go through the legislative process and become law. Moutsoulas and other ALS patients would benefit greatly if existing treatments stuck in clinical trials were accessible to them.

Moutsoulas is a Navy veteran and a longtime active member of his local community. In 2005, he ran and won a four-year term on the School Committee of his hometown, and later served on the city’s Board of Registrars.

In May, Moutsoulas participated in the #ShaveALSChallenge, which, similar to ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, encouraged people to shave their heads to raise awareness about promising ALS treatments stuck in clinical trials:

Georgia COVID-19 deaths hit 3-month low, as reopening belies predicted health catastrophe

Cases have continued to increase while deaths have plummeted.

The state of Georgia has reached a three-month low in its number of recorded coronavirus deaths, roughly two months after the state began to lift its lockdown restrictions amid sharp criticism that a too-hasty reopening would result in widespread fatalities.

The state's COVID-19 dashboard shows a seven-day running average of about 15.3 deaths per day as of June 15. The state's moving average has not been that low since March 28. (The posted average has continued to decline since June 15, though the state cautions that data within the last 14 days may be updated as more cases and deaths are reported.)

The average number of daily deaths in the state has been on a marked decline for over two months, since it peaked on April 22 at an average of 43 deaths a day.

Those low and continuously declining figures have defied earlier predictions that the state, which began reopening its economy on April 24, would soon see surging coronavirus numbers accompanied by a spiraling death rate.

Cases have jumped noticeably in Georgia since reopening — the seven-day average of confirmed cases is now just over 1,000, up from 736 when the state began reopening. But reported deaths have persistently declined over that time.

The state's total number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is also sharply down from April 24, when it listed a 4,221 people in state hospitals. The number as of Monday was 1,359, though hospitalizations have been on a slow rise since around June 10 after bottoming out at around 800.

The state's declining death numbers could point to several likely conclusions: The virus itself may have mutated and become less deadly, as numerous scientists have argued; the disease may be infecting lower age demographics in the state with better chances of recovery, as has been observed elsewhere; or state residents may be practicing strict hygiene and "social distancing" rules even as the state continues to re-open.

Global Hydroxychloroquine Study To Resume After Positive Trial Results

UK regulators have approved the resumption of a global trial aimed at determining whether hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are effective in preventing COVID-19 infections in healthcare settings, according to Reuters.

The trial, known as COPCOV, was paused after another British study found the drugs to be ineffective in treating the virus, however the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now allowed the research to resume following positive COPCOV trial results.

"Participants will take the study drugs each day for a period of three months, and will be followed closely to see how well the drug is tolerated, whether they contract the virus, and if they do, whether they develop mild or more severe COVID-19," according to Tropical Health Network.

According to Reuters, COPCOV is a "randomised, placebo-controlled trial that is aiming to enrol 40,000 healthcare workers and other at-risk staff around the world," conducted by Oxford University's Bangkok-based Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU).

The study is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Unsurprisingly, their website makes no mention of the inclusion of zinc - largely credited by pro-HCQ physicians as the key ingredient to the treatment.
