COVID-19 prompts ‘hyper-activity’ in blood clotting cells, research shows

https://www.foxnews.com/science/covid-19-prompts-hyper-activity-in-blood-clotting-cells-research-shows

COVID-19 triggered changes in blood platelets could be a contributing factor to the onset of heart attacks and strokes in some patients with the disease, new research reveals.

Scientists from the University of Utah Health found that inflammatory proteins produced during infection significantly alter the function of platelets, making them "hyperactive" and more prone to form dangerous and potentially deadly blood clots.

Researchers hope that if they can better understand the causes of these changes, they could lead to more effective treatments for patients. Their report appears in Blood, an American Society of Hematology journal.

"Our finding adds an important piece to the jigsaw puzzle that we call COVID-19," said Robert A. Campbell, senior author of the study and an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, in a statement. "We found that inflammation and systemic changes, due to the infection, are influencing how platelets function, leading them to aggregate faster, which could explain why we are seeing increased numbers of blood clots in COVID patients."

According to scientists, some evidence suggests that COVID-19 is associated with an increased risk of blood clotting, which can lead to other cardiovascular problems in some patients.

Researchers studied 41 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City; next, they compared blood from these patients with samples taken from healthy individuals who were matched for age and sex.

The researchers found that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, seems to trigger genetic changes in platelets. Those changes also impact how platelets interacted with the immune system, likely contributing to respiratory inflammation that could result in more severe lung injury.

"There are genetic processes that we can target that would prevent platelets from being changed," Campbell explained. "If we can figure out how COVID-19 is interacting with megakaryocytes or platelets, then we might be able to block that interaction and reduce someone's risk of developing a blood clot."

Trump-appointed federal judge upholds legal challenge to administration asylum rule

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/judge-upholds-legal-challenge-to-trump-administration-asylum-rule

A federal judge on Tuesday upheld a legal challenge to the Trump administration’s rule requiring asylum seekers to request asylum in another country before coming to the United States.

Washington, D.C. District Court Judge Timothy J. Kelly, who was appointed by Trump in 2017, ruled that the administration’s “Third-Country Asylum Rule” violated the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows most people who have reached the U.S. border to apply for asylum, according to Axios.

The ruling is a blow to the administration’s immigration policy and comes less than a week after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), allowing nearly 800,000 people brought to the U.S. illegally as children to stay without fear of deportation.

Kelly described the administration’s asylum rule as rendering “aliens seeking to enter the United States at its southern border categorically ineligible for asylum unless they first applied for similar protection in a third country they transited through."

Neal Katyal, who is involved in the challenge, said the ruling goes into effect immediately.

Kelly said the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security “unlawfully dispensed” with requirements in the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and issued the rule “without observance of procedure required by law.”

The APA governs how federal agencies issue regulations and gives the public an opportunity to comment on proposed regulations.

"There are many circumstances in which courts appropriately defer to the national security judgments of the Executive," Kelly wrote. "But determining the scope of an APA exception is not one of them."

AG Barr targeted by House Dem’s impeachment resolution

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ag-barr-targeted-by-house-dems-impeachment-resolution

A House Democrat who’s a frequent critic of the Trump administration submitted a resolution Tuesday calling for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr.

House Resolution 1032, filed by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee, accuses the nation’s top law enforcement officer of using his job to pursue political goals.

“Today, I introduced #HRes1032, which would authorize an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Barr,” Cohen wrote on Twitter. “He has politicized the DOJ, undermined the rule of law, abused his power, obstructed justice & violated the first amendment. He is not fit to be Attorney General.”

Cohen specifically cited Barr’s role in Justice Department decision to change sentencing recommendations for former Trump adviser Roger Stone – who was convicted on charges of obstruction, lying to Congress and witness tampering – and Barr’s role in the removal of protesters from Lafayette Square near the White House on June 1, prior to a Trump photo op outside St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The congressman’s action came five months after House Democrats’ efforts to impeach President Trump failed when the Senate voted Feb. 5 to clear the president of two counts of wrongdoing.

It also came just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed any effort to impeach Barr as being ill-advised.

“At this point, let’s solve our problems by going to the polls and voting on Election Day,” Pelosi said during a Washington Post Live interview.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., similarly called a Barr impeachment effort a “waste of time,” Politico reported, although Nadler also said last week that his committee “may very well” seek to remove Barr.

Last week, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec hit back at any talk of impeaching Barr, who has led the department since February 2019 after previously serving in the post from November 1991 to January 2003 under former President George H.W. Bush.

Kupec, during an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” dismissed such efforts as “a political thing.”

“If people have a problem with Bill Barr coming back to the Department of Justice to restore one system of justice, not a two-tiered system, I think that says a lot more about the critics than it does about the attorney general,” Kupec said. “Because that is what he has done again and again.

“He approaches all cases with an open mind. He judges them according to the facts and the law without regard to political consideration,” Kupec continued. “This is what he promised to at his confirmation, this is what he has done throughout his tenure as attorney general, and that is what he will continue to do until his last day as AG.”

Cohen, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, began circulating his resolution on Capitol Hill last week, hoping to attract support from fellow House members, Politico reported.

At least two other House Democrats have publicly advocated for impeaching Barr, according to Politico. They are U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Bill Pascrell of New Jersey.

House Democrats previously impeached Trump last December on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with a July 2019 phone call with the president of Ukraine.

Cohen has a reputation for being something of a showman in the House.

In May 2019, Cohen ate from a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken during a Capitol Hill hearing on the Mueller report, to suggest that Barr was “a chicken” for opting not to appear before the House judiciary panel.
