QAnon-linked Lauren Boebert wins her Colorado primary

It will be Lauren Boebert who goes into the election in Colorado in November after her surprise primary victory last night.

The owner of a gun-themed restaurant where staff carry their weapons as they serve customers, Boebert won after a campaign in which she accused five-term Rep. Scott Tipton of not being sufficiently pro-Donald Trump, even though the president had endorsed Tipton.

KEY FACTS

Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman called the race for Boebert on Tuesday evening, when she led Rep. Scott Tipton by 10 points, according to the New York Times.

Boebert challenged Tipton, a 5-term incumbent, from his right, arguing that he too often voted with Democrats and slamming him for voting in favor of the CARES Act, the sweeping coronavirus relief bill that passed 416-6 in the House and 96-0 in the Senate.

Boebert owns Shooters Grill, a restaurant in Rifle, Colorado, where servers open-carry firearms.

Boebert has also expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory, which posits a deep-state conspiracy against President Trump, once saying on a Q-friendly web show “Everything I've heard of Q — I hope this is real. Because it only means America is getting stronger and better and people are returning to conservative values."

Boebert achieved a viral moment in September, 2019, when she confronted then-presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke at a town hall for saying “Hell, yes, we're going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” telling him, “hell no, you’re not.”

What To Watch For

Boebert will face off with former State Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush, who unsuccessfully challenged Tipton in 2018. Bush has campaigned on disaster relief, environmental conservation and removing big money from politics.

News Peg

Colorado’s 3rd District is Republican-leaning, but it’s winnable for Democrats. Trump won it by 12 points in 2016 and Tipton won it by 8 points in 2018. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added the seat to their list of targets in January, 2019.

Big Number

$847,000. Bush holds an enormous cash advantage over Boebert, with $980,000 to Boebert’s $133,000. But Boebert will apparently have the backing of her party. Despite endorsing Tipton, Trump congratulated Boebert on her win, and the National Republican Campaign Committee said they will back her as well.

Surprising Fact

Tipton is the third Trump-endorsed candidate to lose in a GOP primary this month and the fifth incumbent to lose to a primary challenger in 2020.
