It's amazing how many people aren't making the correlation between "legendary" and "biblical".
Allegory = How to pass down harsh and terrifying realities in a way that doesn't scare the piss out of the future generations.
Example: Everyone has a story of a sudden worldwide flood that wiped everything out in the blink of an eye. How does one restart society and relate what happened?
Storyteling.

Secular power.
Wash your hands!
>"Why?"
Because it's good for you!
>Says who?
The greatest thinkers!
>"They're all daft."

>"Well if God said it, then sure. I'll do it."
Whatever works, just wash your damned hands.
