Why is everyone so keen on some gold standard.

Who owns all the gold?

Is gold particularly useful? Can you eat it? Can you defend yourself with it? Can it keep you warm?

Up until the 1920s grain was the international trade currency.

Not saying we should revert to grain, but doesn't it seem that something like steel, which can be used for construction and defense, for which their is a present need for quality product, would be a much better alternative? At least until we are able to transition to something better?
