Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) yesterday unveiled a new office to help Hong Kongers migrate to the island, a day after China imposed a contentious law that has sent chills through the financial hub.

The opening of the Taiwan-Hong Kong Office for Exchanges and Services is a declaration of "Taiwan's support for Hong Kong's democracy and freedom, as well as Taiwan's determination in expressing care for the Hong Kong people", said MAC Minister Chen Ming-tong.

The office is mainly staffed by MAC officials, who will be manning some 20 telephone lines for Hong Kongers who wish to relocate to Taiwan to study, work, make investments or seek political asylum.

The office will also provide funding for those in need, details of which are still being discussed by the authorities, said Mr Chiu Chiu-cheng, MAC's deputy minister.

The Vatican, in a highly unusual move, summoned both the US and Israeli ambassadors to express the Holy See’s concern about Israel’s moves to extend its sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

A Vatican statement said meetings with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, and US Ambassador Callista Gingrich and Israeli Ambassador Oren David, took place on Tuesday.

A senior diplomatic source told Reuters that Parolin met the two envoys separately, a detail which was not clear in the Vatican statement.

It said Parolin, the Vatican’s top diplomat, expressed “the concern of the Holy See regarding possible unilateral actions that may further jeopardize the search for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the delicate situation in the Middle East.”

According to the coalition agreement between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz, the sovereignty move could have taken place on Wednesday, but no agreement has yet been reached with Washington yet on the modalities of the move under the peace proposal announced by US President Donald Trump in January.

The Vatican statement reiterated its position in support of a two-state solution, saying, “Israel and the State of Palestine have the right to exist and to live in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders.”

WASHINGTON — A group of former George W. Bush administration and campaign officials have launched a new super PAC supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, the latest in a growing number of Republican groups to come out in support of the former vice president over President Trump.

The group, called 43 Alumni for Biden, has recruited at least 200 former White House officials, campaign aides and Cabinet secretaries who worked under Bush to join the push against the Republican incumbent. They’re planning to roll out supportive testimonial videos featuring high-profile Republicans and to launch an effort in key states aimed at turning out disaffected Republican voters. News of the group was first reported by Reuters. Bush was the 43rd president.

Kristopher Purcell, who worked in the White House communications office and in the State Department during the Bush administration, said many members of the group still consider themselves Republicans but see the need to defeat Trump as beyond their personal politics.

“You don’t have to agree with a president on all of his policy decisions or agenda. We ask them to go to the White House and do what they think is in the best interest of the country. That’s what we as alumni of George W. Bush did, and we think Joe Biden will deliver that as well,” he said.

Two groups, Republican Voters Against Trump and the Lincoln Project, have already been airing ads in key states boosting Biden and attacking Trump. And last month, a group of GOP operatives opposed to Trump launched Right Side PAC, which is aimed at turning out disenchanted Republican voters for Biden.

Leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) asked President Trump Wednesday to cancel an upcoming meeting with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, saying it would be a distraction from the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter to Trump, 13 CHC members led by Chairman Rep. Joaquín Castro (D-Texas) expressed "concerns and disapproval with the recent announcement that you have invited Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to a meeting at the White House in early July."

López Obrador is due to visit Washington on July 8-9, his first international trip since being inaugurated as president in December 2018, to celebrate the entry into force of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"While this meeting may appear to be trade related and tied to the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), it is nothing more than an attempt to distract from the coronavirus crisis and your failure to lead an adequate response to the pandemic," wrote Castro.

He was joined by Democratic Reps. Adriano Espaillat (N.Y.), Veronica Escobar (Texas), Jesús García (Ill.), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Filemon Vela (Texas), Juan Vargas (Calif.), Sylvia Garcia (Texas), Raúl M. Grijalva (Ariz.), Grace Napolitano (Calif.), Luis Correa (Calif.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), and Tony Cárdenas (Calif.).

“Your decision to hold a meeting when the Congress is not in session, when members of Congress will be in our districts addressing the needs of communities across the United States that have been devastated by this pandemic, is a blatant attempt to politicize the important U.S.-Mexico relationship along partisan lines,”
