These are newly filed cases, not changes to old ones.
The total is accumulative, but just the monthly number has increased by roughly 400-500 as far as can remember. Usually we're somewhere in the upper 5K range, sometimes low 6.
Interesting revelation in Barton Gellman's new Snowden book - Dark Mirror. Apparently Snowden's "read me" file on the drives first given to the reporters made claims that he had access to private comms of 17 people - SCOTUS and the Gang of Eight. Technically, it wasn't all of them, at least that's what Snowden later downplayed the claim with, but notable connection to the 17 none the less.
