FBI: June 2020 Shattered Firearm Background Check Record

June 2020 witnessed nearly 4,000,000 National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks, shattering not only the record for any previous June but also the record for any single month, period.

FBI numbers showed 3,931,607 NICS checks conducted in June, besting the previous single-month record of 3,740,688 in March 2020.

This means June 2020 witnessed more background checks than any single month has witnessed in the 20 years background checks for retail sales have been required. This also means that June 2020 continues the trend of each month from March forward witnessing more checks in 2020 than it ever has.

In other words, January 2020 set the record for NICS checks for the month of January, February 2020 for the month of February, March 2020 for the month of March, and on and on through June 2020.

Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting examined the background check numbers and estimated 2,387,524 guns were sold in June 2020. That represents an increase of 145.3 percent over June 2019.

House Unanimously Passes China Sanctions Bill In Response To Hong Kong Law

The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill imposing sanctions on banks that do business with Chinese officials involved in the national security law that cracks down on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, a move many lawmakers said violated the government’s promise to honor the autonomy of the former British colony.

During a special appearance at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the new law "signals the death of the one country, two systems" model followed by China with respect to Hong Kong

"The law is a brutal, sweeping crackdown against the people of Hong Kong, intended to destroy the freedoms they were promised," Pelosi said.

As we noted earlier, China described the security law as a “sword of Damocles” hanging over its most strident critics.

The bill, which according to Bloomberg is similar to a measure passed by the Senate last week, would have to be approved by the Senate before going to President Donald Trump for a signature. The House bill, which was slightly modified from the Senate version sponsored by Senators Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican, and Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, was changed because of a procedural snag that requires all revenue-producing bills to originate in the House.

Fresno State Students Call for Removal of Gandhi Statue

Students at Fresno State University have circulated a petition that calls for the removal of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on campus. The students argued that the statue should be removed on the basis of Gandhi’s alleged prejudices against minority groups.

According to a report by Campus Reform, students at Fresno State University have launched a campaign to call for the removal of a statue of Gandhi on campus.

Nearly 5,000 students signed a petition that called for the removal of the Gandhi statute. Despite Gandhi’s status as a warrior for peace, the students allege that Gandhi held prejudices against various minority groups.

Gandhi is idolized worldwide as a prophet, a visionary, even a messiah. However, the popular image of Gandhi is a myth. The lack of efficient methods of communication and documentation in the past allowed Gandhi to effortlessly create a convincing but false image of himself. Gandhi was deeply prejudiced against all minorities, from black Africans, Jews, to low-caste Hindus. He also demonstrated a shocking lack of morality, from sleeping naked with young girls to employing nonviolence merely as a tool of political expediency.

Fresno State alumni, however, are fighting back against the push to remove the Gandhi statue. A petition, entitled “Keep the Gandhi statue at Fresno State,” was created last week to counter the movement for its removal.

“Please join me in urging the administration, faculty, staff and students of Fresno State to preserve the history that has been created and as of this moment still stands in the Peace Garden,” the petition reads.

In a statement, Fresno State University President Joseph Castro announced that the university will retain the statue. However, Castro praised the students that have brought attention to the issue.

Russia Denies Causing Latest Radioactivity Over Europe; UN Agency Says Origin "Still Unclear"

Last Friday monitors with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) issued an alarming report that its radiation sensors based in Scandinavia picked up abnormal radioactivity levels in the air over the Baltics and Scandanavia. Its ultra-sensitive networked sensors set up across Europe and the world are capable of picking up nuclear weapons testing or possible nuclear power plant leakage anywhere around the globe.

The Stockholm monitoring station "detected 3 isotopes; Cs-134, Cs-137 & Ru-103 associated with Nuclear fission at higher than usual levels," according to CTBTO chief Lassina Zerbo. The UN nuclear agency has been investigating the 'mystery' radioactivity, which while not considered in large enough concentrations to harm humans, still “are certainly nuclear fission products, most likely from a civil source,” according to the prior CTBTO statement. “We are able to indicate the likely region of the source, but it’s outside the CTBTO’s mandate to identify the exact origin.”

However it's clear that there was a release of "very low" levels of man-made radioactivity.

The UN watchdog said Tuesday that the small amounts of radioactive isotopes detected over a significant area spanning from western Russia to Baltic countries to parts of Scandinavia still have an unclear origin and cause.

The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) director general, Rafael Grossi, also sought to assure the public that “the levels reported to the IAEA are very low and pose no risk to human health and the environment.”

According to the AP, European countries are being asked to self-report any radiation releases. So far at least 29 have voluntarily reported no known incidents within their borders, including Russia.

Trump Admin Vows to Secure Permanent U.N. Arms Embargo on Iran

Pompeo says arms ban cannot be lifted on Iran as long as it poses global threat

The United States will seek a permanent extension of an arms embargo on Iran that is set to expire later this year, setting up a confrontation at the United Nations with Russia and China, Iranian allies poised to block the Trump administration's efforts.

The October expiration of the United Nations arms embargo on Iran was a key part of the Obama-era nuclear deal that blocked nations from exporting arms to Tehran. The Trump administration has vowed to keep the embargo alive and in recent months expended significant diplomatic capital preparing a U.N. resolution to accomplish that goal. Russia and China promise to veto any such measure and are able to unilaterally do so as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. Both countries remain close allies of Iran and have already discussed plans to sell Tehran billions of dollars' worth of advanced weaponry once the embargo lifts.

The Trump administration has made extending the arms embargo a centerpiece of its "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran, which includes crippling economic sanctions. The diplomatic push comes as Iran ramps up its contested nuclear work, particularly the enrichment of uranium, the key component in an atomic weapon. For months, Tehran has blatantly violated the nuclear deal by, among other things, preventing international atomic inspectors from accessing key military sites believed to contain undeclared nuclear materials. As the 2020 U.S. presidential election approaches, the arms embargo could be the Trump administration's last chance to prevent Tehran from becoming an international arms dealer.

Amid the showdown between the United States, Russia, and China, European countries on the U.N. Security Council have sought to forge a compromise. Under this proposal, the arms embargo would be extended, but only for a short time, and might be limited in other ways, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ruled out such a plan on Wednesday in some of his clearest comments on the matter to date. The United States, he said, will not tolerate any plan that only extends the embargo for a limited time.

"Our objective is not to extend the arms embargo for another short period of time," Pompeo said in response to questions from the Washington Free Beacon during a briefing at the State Department.

The embargo is "not a time-limited matter," Pompeo said. "Extending it for six months or a year or two years fundamentally falls into the same trap that the previous administration fell into."

The only other option to extend the arms embargo would involve revoking the nuclear deal itself through a "snapback mechanism" written into the original U.N. resolution that endorsed the deal and lifted the embargo. Iran hawks in Congress have long called for such a move, but Pompeo on Wednesday said snapback "is not our first objective."

Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels made it clear this week that he and his officers will not put up anyone who would bring their lawlessness to his Florida community.

In a video YouTube statement posted Tuesday, Daniels, who is black and a Republican, stood with about 20 deputies to declare to civil rights protesters who might consider getting violent that they are not only not welcome in Clay County, but also that he would not hesitate to dole out the pain and use legal gun owners to help keep the peace.

Standing by their oath

Daniels began by letting citizens know that he and his officers are aware of the debate going on nationwide about police reform and sought to reassure them that the men and women in his office will stand by their oath to protect and defend the Constitution and protect the public.

"Look folks, don't fall victim to subjecting yourself to this conversation that law enforcement is bad, that law enforcement is the enemy of the citizens that we're sworn to protect and serve," Daniels said, noting that it's an oath that ends with "so help me God."

"God is absent from the media's message or Black Lives Matter or any other group out there that's making themselves a spectacle, disrupting what we know to be our quality of life in this country," he continued. "In Clay County, we have a great quality of life, we have a great relationship with our community."

Lawlessness won't prevail

He went on to explain how he and his officers view the lawlessness that has spread in many other cities and counties across the U.S.

"Lawlessness — that's unacceptable in this country. Lawlessness — that's unacceptable in Clay County," Daniels said. "If you threaten to come to Clay County and think that for one second we'll bend our backs for you, you're sadly mistaken."

"I know what happens when lawlessness prevails," he continued, adding, "God is raising up men and women, just like the folks you see standing behind me, who will have strong backbones and will stand in the gap between lawlessness and the good citizenry that we're sworn to protect and serve."

China's Ambassador in UK Summoned to Foreign Office Over 'Deep Concern' About Hong Kong Law

The national security law for Hong Kong was unanimously passed by the top Chinese legislative body, the standing committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), on Tuesday, later signed by President Xi Jinping. The law aimed at strengthening security and safety, is seen by Hong Kong residents as a violation of their liberties.

The United Kingdom summoned the Chinese ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, to express "deep concerns" over the newly-adopted national security law for Hong Kong, Sky News reported.

The Foreign Office permanent under-secretary, Sir Simon McDonald, reportedly met with Liu to echo UK PM Boris Johnson's and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab's claims that the law breached the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, providing Hong Kong with autonomy until 2047.

According to Sky News, the meeting marked the second time a Chinese ambassador has been called to the Foreign Office regarding Hong Kong since 1984.

Following the adoption of the HK Security Law, the United Kingdom expressed dissatisfaction with the move, with PM Johnson denouncing the legislation as breaching the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The ambassador tweeted that "UK has no sovereignty, jurisdiction or right of “supervision” over Hong Kong whatsoever", and stressed that Hong Kong issues are China's internal affair alone and no business of the outside world's.

Earlier, the United Kingdom, in response to the new security law, offered UK citizenship rights for nearly 3 million British Nationals Overseas (BNO) in Hong Kong and their immediate families, providing them rights to live in the UK for five years and then apply for settled status and citizenship.

​However, former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's translator, Victor Gao, cited by Sky News, expressed doubt that the British government would follow through on its promise, suggesting that "they didn't do it in 1997 and I don't think they'll do it now". He also noted that, in a comparison between Britain and Hong Kong, residents of the latter would choose to stay because Hong Kong is "a good place to do business, [with] very low taxes".

On behalf of over 50 countries, Cuba welcomed China's imposition of its national security law against terrorism, subversion and secession on Tuesday. A joint statement to the UN Human Rights Council supported China's "reaffirmation of adherence to 'One Country, Two Systems' guideline".

Amid criticism from opposition activists claiming that the guidelines are breached by the law, and condemnation from several other nations, including the United States, Beijing reiterated that Hong Kong is the internal affair of Beijing and not subject to foreign interference.

Ray Fisher on Wednesday accused Whedon of "gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable" behavior toward the cast and crew during the making of 2017 movie "Justice League," Variety reported.

Fisher's accusation also pointed at former Warner Bros. co-president of production Jon Berg and former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns, the outlet said, adding that they "enabled" Whedon's alleged behavior. The pair were "Justice League" producers, Variety said.

The actor's tweet doesn't offer detail regarding his allegation. Whedon had no comment, the outlet noted, adding that a Warner Bros. rep didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The new group, 43 Alumni for Biden, announced their formation on Wednesday, saying their purpose is to “unite and mobilize a community of historically Republican voters who are dismayed and disappointed by the damage done to our nation.”

“For four years, we have watched with grave concern as the party we loved has morphed into a cult of personality that little resembles the Party of Lincoln and Reagan,” said 43 Alumni for Biden PAC Director Karen Kirksey in a press release. “We endorse Joe Biden not necessarily in full support of his political agenda but rather in full agreement with the urgent need to restore the soul of this nation.”

The group began outreach last month, according to The Hill. More prominent and high-profile Bush alums in the group are expected to be made public in the coming weeks.

Committee member Jennifer Millikin told The Hill many in the group don’t agree with Biden’s policies but agree his temperament and demeanor are what they’re interested in.

Millikin severed in the General Services Administration under Bush and the Small Business Administration in the Trump administration.

“We as a group have policy differences with him. We’re just looking to have someone in the office who will stand up and act like a leader,” she said. “We can debate the differences in the way we think about policies, we can have a robust debate, that’s what America’s for. But that’s not happening now, and we feel it will definitely happen with Joe Biden in office.”

Media narrative of peaceful Seattle CHOP zone turned upside down as mayor sends in police to stop violence

As protesters and armed anarchists seized control last month of a swath of Seattle's downtown that includes a police station, dubbing it Capitol Hill Organized Protest, the local and mainstream media largely echoed elected leaders by insisting it was a peaceful protest – until people started getting killed.

The spin by the Seattle Times and national outlets that covered it belied the violent and dangerous origin of the area that began on June 8, when Seattle police abandoned their own station and allowed self-described anarchists to create a "police-free" zone. On Wednesday, police went back in and finished clearing out the area, after multiple shootings, an alleged rape and at least two murders.

“CHOP violently seized six blocks of downtown Seattle, guarded the area they stole with semi-automatic rifles and appointed a leader who called himself a warlord and the media spun it as a fun time with ‘free snacks,’” Washington Times columnist Tim Young told Fox News.

“That's as insane as saying Boko Haram was just trying to start a dating service when they kidnapped nearly 300 women in Nigeria a few years ago,” Young added. “And those liberal outlets probably still can't figure out why people call them fake news.”

Since it was established, there have been at least four shootings, two of which left a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old dead in separate incidents. Seattle police made more than a dozen arrests after Mayor Jenny Durkan declared the gathering an unlawful assembly – a far cry from how it was originally portrayed by the media and by Durkan herself.

The mayor responded to criticism of her leadership by President Trump by tweeting that he should not be "so afraid of democracy."

“The CHOP has become lawless and brutal,” Police Chief Carmen Best said Wednesday in a written statement. “Four shootings – two fatal – robberies, assaults, violence and countless property crimes have occurred in this several block area.”

The Seattle Times was perhaps the most egregious when it came to celebrating the cop-free area. The paper boasted about free snacks and pleasant smells inside the zone, called CHAZ at the time, on June 10.

“Free snacks at the No-Cop Co-op. Free gas masks from some guy’s sedan. Free speech at the speaker’s circle, where anyone could say their piece. A free documentary movie – Ava DuVernay’s “13th” – showing after dark,” Seattle Times reporter Evan Bush wrote. “Perhaps most important to demonstrators, the neighborhood core was free of uniformed police.”

Bush described the area as “Seattle’s quirky, lefty Capitol Hill,” noting that organizers “envisioned education initiatives, programs to address homelessness and building a community movement where unarmed police are designed to de-escalate.”

The Seattle Times even reported on the delightful odor the “calm and peaceful crowd” were providing residents.

“The streets smelled like the Fourth of July, as people seared hot dogs on curbside grills,” Bush wrote.

Apple to Temporarily Close 30 More US Stores as Coronavirus Cases Continue to Surge

Recent surges in COVID-19 coronavirus cases have forced several southern and western US states to pause reopening plans. The country's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has warned that infections could rise to 100,000 new daily cases if the outbreak is not quickly contained.

Tech giant Apple has announced it will close a further 30 previously reopened stores in the US this week, as several states have seen a significant rise in new COVID-19 infections.

According to CNBC, the latest states to see Apple stores reclose are Alabama, California, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada and Oklahoma. They will join stores in Florida, Mississippi, Texas and Utah who closed their branches on Wednesday. This brings the total number of stores that have had to reclose to 77.

“Due to current COVID-19 conditions in some of the communities we serve, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas. We take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible," an Apple spokesman said in a statement cited by CNBC.

This action comes as the US recorded over 46,000 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, another daily record, according to a Reuters tally.

The New York Times database showed that the number of new coronavirus cases in the US has risen by 80 percent in just the last two weeks.

Eight states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas reported record daily numbers of new infections on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

America’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, told the US Senate on Tuesday that the rate of new daily infections could more than double, to 100,000 per day, if local outbreaks of the pandemic are not controlled.

Fauci noted that he was “very concerned”, in particular about Florida, Arizona, Texas and California, the four states hit hardest by new infections.

This new surge, particularly in southern and western US states, has seen at least 16 states pause or roll back their previous reopening plans. On Tuesday, US Vice President Mike Pence noted that the Trump administration would "fully support" governors' guidance to pause reopening amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.

On Monday, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered all bars, gyms, movie theatres and other establishments to be shut down again for at least 30 days, in an effort to curb the virus.

Pence visited the state on Wednesday, as it reported nearly 4,900 new COVID-19 cases and 88 additional deaths, according to AZ Central.

Earlier, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned bars in the state from serving alcohol on their premises.

LA School Police Chief Resigns After School Board Cut $25 Million in School Police Funding, Ordered All Officers Off Campus

Los Angeles School Police Chief Todd Chamberlain on Wednesday afternoon announced his resignation to the department, per sources, reported FOX LA.

“Decision comes after school board decided last night to cut $25 million in school police funding and ordered all officers off campus/out of uniform for now,” reported Bill Melugin.

Mr. Chamberlain became the chief of the Los Angeles School Police Department in December of last year after retiring as LAPD Commander.

The Los Angeles Unified School District Tuesday night voted to cut the police budget by 35%, or $25 million.

LASPD officers were also ordered to turn in their uniforms and patrol off campus, reported CBSN Los Angeles.

The $25 million taken away from the LASPD will be diverted to school programs to help ‘students of color.’

This is just the beginning. More police chiefs and officers will be resigning from their jobs.
