Plaintiff's lawyers work on contingency fee basis. If they win they get a %, typically 33%. If they lose, they get nothing. They take on cases they believe they will win. They front the expenses of research and litigation. The good ones win often enough to make out very well. The bad ones don't continue as plaintiffs' lawyers for long.
