Black Lives Matter activists in Los Angeles believe that they live in a city that is filled with “liberal white supremacists.”

“So it’s important as we say things — like I see your sign ‘fuck Donald Trump,’ yeah ‘fuck Donald Trump’ — that we remember that we live in a city that is largely liberal white supremacists,” Dr. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter LA told an enthusiastic crowd in a video posted by the People’s City Council on Wednesday:

Abdullah, a professor of Pan-African Studies at Cal State LA, went on to describe liberal white supremacists as those who have “black friends that sit at the dinner table” and those who “speak Spanish.”

“So the kind of white supremacists that have black friends that sit at the dinner table. Right? That brag about having served in the Peace Corps. Right? That speak Spanish. Right?” she asked.

“The kind of white supremacist who will smile in your face but enact policies that kill our people,” she added, calling Trump a “white supremacist terrorist” and encouraging the crowd to shout, “fuck Eric Garcetti.”

The claim of liberal white supremacists purportedly dominating L.A. comes as activists across the nation demand the removal of historic monuments in the name of racial justice — even those that are unrelated to the Confederacy.

The New York Times heightened the demands on Wednesday, publishing a piece detailing several grievances against Mount Rushmore, “citing its location on ‘Indigenous land,’ the sculptor’s purported ties to white supremacy, and two of its subjects’ slave ownership,” as Breitbart News detailed:

The Times piece follows several instances of activists taking matters into their own hands, vandalizing and destroying various historic monuments and sculptures in their self-described quest for justice.

Last month, vandals in Madison, Wisconsin, destroyed a statue of Col. Hans Christian Heg, described as “an immigrant from Norway who died fighting for the Union against slavery.” Demonstrators decapitated the statue and threw it into a nearby lake:

L.A. Councilman Jose Huizar faces federal charges in ‘pay-to-play’ corruption probe

City Councilman Jose Huizar was accused Tuesday of accepting more than $1.5 million in bribes and other benefits to approve or stall large building projects and shape the Los Angeles development landscape, prosecutors said.

Huizar, 51, was taken into custody at his Boyle Heights home, officials said. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison on allegations that he masterminded a “pay-to-play” scheme involving real estate developers.

“Mr. Huizar was busy enjoying the fruits of his alleged corruption while his criminal enterprise sold the city to the highest bidder behind the backs of taxpayers,” said Paul Delacourt, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, in a statement Tuesday.

The mayor and other city leaders have been calling for Huizar to resign since his former special assistant agreed to plead guilty in the bribery scheme.

After pledging to begin the process of removing Huizar, Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez announced that members unanimously voted to suspend the disgraced politician, who has represented the 14th district that encompasses downtown and the eastern part of Los Angeles since 2005.

Prosecutors charged Huizar with one count of conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Authorities allege the councilman and his associates violated multiple laws, including bribery, honest services fraud, extortion and money laundering.

“In exchange for selling out the city,” Huizar and his associates were awarded with campaign contributions, stacks of casino chips, lavish dinners and more, FBI Special Agent in Charge Voviette Morgan said.

“This case pulled back the curtain on rampant corruption at City Hall,” U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said in a statement. “Councilman Huizar violated the public trust to a staggering degree, allegedly soliciting and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from multiple sources over many years.”

There was no immediate response to an email seeking comment that was sent to Huizar’s communications director. The name of his attorney was not immediately available.

Last month, former Huizar aide George Esparza, 33, agreed to plead to a count of racketeering conspiracy, which could carry a maximum 20-year prison term, according to prosecutors.

At the time, Martinez called for Huizar to immediately step down and was joined by Mayor Eric Garcetti, who said he was sickened by the corruption allegations.

“My immediate concern is to ensure the good people of Council District 14 have representation, assistance and support through whatever occurs next,” Martinez said in announcing Huizar’s suspension. She added that she will discuss the “best path forward” with Kevin De León, the former California senator who won the district seat in March.

Thursday during a radio interview with the BBC, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci said the United States is facing a resurgence of the coronavirus because “even in the most strict lockdown, only about 50% of the country locked down.”

Fauci said, “Well obviously it’s a serious situation if you look at the different curves between the European Union, the U.K. and others how they handled the outbreak, they had big spikes and then brought it down almost or even to baseline in some countries. The situation in the United States is very problematic.”

He continued, “We are seeing very disturbing spikes in different individual states in the United States. What we’ve seen over the last several days is a spike in cases that are way beyond the worst spikes that we’ve seen. That is not good news. We’ve got to get that under control, or we risk an even greater outbreak in the United States.”

He added, “When you look at the fact that we never got things to baseline where so many counties in Europe, the U.K., and other countries did. They closed down to the tune of 97% lockdown. In the United States, even in the most strict lockdown, only about 50% of the country locked down. That allowed the perpetuation of the outbreak that we never did get under very good control. And now, all you have to do is take a look at the news at night, and you see people congregating at bars without masks, congregating in different types of groups that are well beyond the recommended number. What happens when you do that, and you don’t wear a mask, you get the kind of outbreaks we’re seeing.”

ICE Homeland Security Investigations arrests get MS-13 gang members 27-year, 30-year sentences

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrests in Santa Cruz, California, resulted in MS-13 gang members receiving a 30-year prison sentence and a 27-year sentence.

“Homeland Security Investigations will continue our work to eradicate MS-13 criminal gang members trying to operate in California or anywhere else in America,” said HSI San Francisco (NorCal) Special Agent in Charge Tatum King. “We appreciate the critically important work our partners at the Santa Cruz Police Department undertook to stop the victimization of community members by MS-13. HSI will continue to stand united with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in our ongoing efforts to protect our communities.”

The transnational street gang La Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, has local chapters, or cliques, throughout the world, including El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the United States. MS-13 members and associates engage in crimes such as murder, narcotics trafficking, extortion, and obstruction of justice. MS-13 members enforce gang rules and protect gang territory with violence, including murder. The Santa Cruz Salvatrucha Locos (SCSL) is an MS-13 clique that operates in and around Santa Cruz, California.

On June 18, 2020, MS-13 gang member Alexander Martinez-Flores, a.k.a. “Pocar,” was sentenced in the Northern District of California to 30 years of incarceration for using a firearm to cause murder, conspiracy to commit murder and extortion, and racketeering conspiracy. Martinez, 29, is a citizen of El Salvador.

Martinez, who was living in Santa Cruz, was a member of the SCSL clique of the MS-13 gang from at least January 2013 to February 2017, and the first-in-command from about February to August 2014. Martinez and SCSL members engaged in violence, drug trafficking and extortion. Martinez coordinated with MS-13 members in El Salvador and other places to carry out the directives of the gang’s leadership in and around Santa Cruz. Martinez directed how SCSL money was maintained and spent.

Along with other gang members, Martinez patrolled SCSL’s claimed gang territory in Santa Cruz with firearms and knives and assaulted, stabbed, threatened or shot rival gang members to maintain control over this “turf.” Martinez hunted for rivals to kill on multiple occasions.

Martinez admitted that he was one of the shooters in a murder committed by SCSL gang members and that in April 2016 the gang discussed seeking approval from El Salvador to kill a suspected rival gang member. The murder was approved, and Martinez was one of the gang members tasked with killing the victim. On Sept. 22, 2016, the victim was shot and killed, and Martinez was one of the shooters. He then celebrated the murder with other MS-13 members.

According to a plea agreement, Martinez had a role in supporting SCSL’s extortion and drug trafficking activities. On one occasion in July 2016, Martinez-Flores collected an extortion payment, the “monthly fee due to SCSL,” from a local drug dealer.

On June 29, Tomas Rivera, a.k.a. “Jonas Portillo Escobar,” a.k.a. “Profugo,” a.k.a. “Caballo,” was sentenced to 27 years in prison for conspiring to engage in racketeering, extortion by force, and murder in aid of racketeering in connection with his role as a leader of the local Santa Cruz-based MS-13 gang clique.

We Don’t Have Enough Cash to Build New Nuclear Weapons, Says Air Force Chief

Nukes or conventional weapons, “the current budget does not allow you to do both,” says Gen. Dave Goldfein, suggesting Congress create a separate account.

The Pentagon’s budget is not large enough to buy new nuclear weapons and conventional forces simultaneously, the U.S. Air Force’s top general said Wednesday.

Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein gave a blunt assessment of the Pentagon’s growing list of bills amid a growing US deficit, on Wednesday, suggesting nuclear expenses have grown so great they may require a separate account of their own.

“I think a debate is that this will be the first time that the nation has tried to simultaneously modernize the nuclear enterprise while it’s trying to modernize an aging conventional enterprise,” Goldfein said during a Brookings Institution appearance. “The current budget does not allow you to do both.”

The Trump administration’s $705 billion fiscal 2021 budget request for the Pentagon — which Congress is reviewing — calls for nearly $29 billion in nuclear weapons spending. The money would go toward new stealth bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missile submarines, a new nuclear cruise missile and upgrades to the global nuclear command, control and communications network. The stealth bomber is the only weapon that could be used for nuclear or conventional strikes. The Energy Department, which oversees nuclear warheads, has requested $15.6 billion in fiscal 2021.

In January 2019, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Pentagon’s nuclear weapons spending plan would cost $494 billion between 2019 and 2028, an average of about $50 billion per year.

Pentagon officials today argue they need 3 to 5 percent annual spending increases to fund weapons projects of all kinds, however defense spending is expected to flatten or slightly decline in the coming years regardless who wins November’s presidential election.

“There are either going to be some significant trades made or we’re going to have to find a fund for strategic nuclear deterrence, that we can use to modernize,” Goldfein said.

In recent years, Pentagon officials, including former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, and lawmakers have considered creating a nuclear weapons fund separate from the military services budgets. Todd Harrison, director of defense budget analysis and the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, questioned the rationale for moving those funds.

Some officials close to Kushner credit the Trump son-in-law's business acumen for policy victories, including negotiations that led to new miles of border wall and bipartisan coalitions in support of the First Step Act, a piece of criminal justice reform Trump often touts.

Some officials close to the administration feel Kushner is intentionally sabotaging his father's agenda, holding his own ideological agenda as a priority. "The depths and lengths Jared is going to stab Trump in the back [are] quite profound," an individual said. "Trump’s been burned by Jared so many times."

In the aftermath of George Floyd's death, White House officials were reportedly divided on whether the president should address the nation amid violent riots and looting. Kushner and two of his staffers, Brooke Rollins and Ja’Ron Smith, urged Trump not to take an aggressive stance because it may alienate black voters. Trump supporters on cable news, including Fox News host Tucker Carlson, have blasted Kushner and others for the administration's response to the violence.

Inside a ransomware attack: From the first breach to the ransom demand

Security researchers map out how a ransomware attack plays out over a two week period.

Security researchers have revealed the anatomy of a ransomware attack, showing how cyber criminals gained access to a network and deployed ransomware – all in the space of just two weeks.

Researchers from tech security company SentinelOne examined a server that was used by criminals in October last year to turn a small security breach in a corporate network into a damaging Ryuk ransomware attack. This sort of data can be vital in helping understand the tactics and techniques used by attackers.

Once the network was breached by the Trickbot malware, the hackers started to hunt around to find out what they had gained access to – and how to make money out of it.

"Over the course of some time they dig around in the network and they attempt to map it out and understand what it looks like. They have an endgame, and their endgame is to monetise the data, the network, for their illicit gain," SentinelOne researcher Joshua Platt told ZDNet. "They already understand there is the potential for making money and are looking to expand that leverage."

Once the hackers decided to exploit the network breach, they used tools like PowerTrick and Cobalt Strike to secure their hold on the network and explored further, searching for open ports and other devices to which they could gain access. Then they moved on to the ransomware phase of the attack.

From the initial TrickBot infection, through profiling the network, to finally initiating the Ryuk malware attack took around two weeks, said SentinelOne. "Going by the timestamps, we can guess the time period of two weeks for dwell time," the company's blog post said.

Ryuk was first seen in August 2018 and has been responsible for multiple attacks globally, according to the UK's National Cyber Security Centre advisory from last year.

It's targeted ransomware: the ransom is set according to the victim's perceived ability to pay, and it can take days or even months from the initial infection to the ransomware being activated, because the hackers need time to identify the most critical network systems. But the NCSC said this delay also gives defenders a window of opportunity to stop the ransomware attack from being triggered, if they can detect that first infection.

Convicted sex offender sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity

TAMPA – A Tampa man was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for attempting to entice a child to engage in sexual activity and has agreed to pay restitution to the victims depicted in child pornography he possessed. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

“This predator tried to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity,” said HSI Tampa Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael B. Cochran. “Thanks to the investigative work of HSI special agents and our law enforcement partners at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, this criminal will now be behind bars.”

According to court documents, Richard Stephen Terry, 56, of Tampa, used the Internet to entice adult women to allow him to engage in sexual activities with their minor children. Agents identified Terry in multiple online chat rooms designed for individuals who are interested in the sexual exploitation of children, and he used the chat rooms to meet and discuss their interests and tactics. Terry communicated online and via text message with multiple undercover law enforcement agents located in various parts of the country between 2015 and 2017.

Between November 2016 and April 2017, Terry communicated with a woman he believed to be a single mother of a 10-year-old girl. In reality, he was talking to an undercover officer from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. In his conversations, Terry proposed meeting with the child and discussed, in graphic detail, the sex acts he wished to engage in with the child when they met. In order to add more credibility and persuade the undercover officer, Terry made up a story that he had been in an incestuous relationship with his two stepdaughters when they were minors and was looking to engage in a “fam life” sexual relationship with the single mom and her daughter. Terry stated that he ultimately did not travel to meet with the undercover officer because he was “scared it’s a set up.”

In June 2017, law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at Terry’s home and found him in possession of more than 400 images and videos of child sex abuse material depicting young children being subjected to sadistic abuse and bondage. To date, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has identified 54 victims depicted in the child sex abuse material.

“Our top priority is protecting our children from those who would harm them,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. “The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida and Homeland Security share this priority. Mr. Terry is not going to hurt any children while in prison. We are proud to have been a part of this investigation.”

The case was prosecuted by U.S. Attorney Middle District Florida Assistant United States Attorney Lisa M. Thelwell. Terry pleaded guilty February 27, 2020.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.

Defund the Border Police! Pro-Migrant NGO Captain’s Radical Call

Carola Rackete, a sea captain and pro-migrant activist, has demanded that the European Union defund its border agency Frontex, claiming that the political bloc and several of its member states are preventing migrants from being transported to Europe.

The German national, who last year rammed Italian border patrol vessels to force her ship full of migrants into an Italian port, said that Frontex must be defunded and accused the EU of wanting to see migrants drown in the Mediterranean sea.

Rackete said migrants were drowning in the Mediterranean, “because the European Union wants them to drown, to scare those who might attempt to cross. They drown because Europe denies them access to any safe routes and leaves them no options other than to risk their lives at sea,” Infomigrants reports.

She went on to accuse Frontex of facilitating “the racist border policy of European states. We have to tear down Fortress Europe, created to let the poor die off the Mediterranean shores where no one sees them.”

Referencing the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, Rackete said that activists should not only defund police but defund Frontex as well. “If #BlackLivesMatter in the US demands to defund the police departments, we consequently have to demand to #DefundFrontex in Europe,” she said on Twitter. A Frontex spokesman called the idea “nonsense”.

The remarks are not the first controversial statements from the far-left activist. Last year, Rackete demanded the EU take in at least half a million migrants from Libya and said Europe should take in “climate refugees”.

“The collapse of the climate system causes climate refugees, which we naturally have to absorb. In some African countries, caused by industrialised countries in Europe, the food base is being destroyed,” she said.

Rackete, who was formerly a captain of a vessel belonging to the German NGO Sea-Watch, had also come into conflict with populist Italian Senator Matteo Salvini. The populist had served as Interior Minister when she rammed border police boats last year and enforced a policy blocking migrant transport NGOs from Italian ports.

In July of last year, Rackete announced she would be pursuing defamation charges against Salvini who did not hesitate to criticise her actions on social media, accusing her and Sea-Watch of human trafficking.

Germany SITREP: Former German Chancellor Says U.S.-EU Alliance Could Now End

A German equivalent to UK’s Financial Times and America’s Wall Street Journal is the Dusseldorf Handelsblatt or “Commerce Sheet,” which headlined on June 30th, “Former Chancellor Schröder: USA Ending Transatlantic Partnership”.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has condemned possible new US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline as “deliberate termination of the transatlantic partnership.” A draft law currently under discussion in the US Congress is “a widespread, unjustified attack on the European economy and an unacceptable interference with EU sovereignty and the energy security of Western Europe,” Schröder writes in his statement for a public hearing of the Economic Committee scheduled for Wednesday in the Bundestag.

Schröder sees the relations with the USA as “heavily burdened” by “escalating tariffs and going it alone” policy by the Americans. Schröder writes: “Economic fines against a NATO ally during the current economic recession are nothing other than a deliberate termination of the transatlantic partnership.”

This is as if Jimmy Carter or Barack Obama were to say that EU policymakers had a trade policy toward the U.S. that is so hostile and uncooperative that in order to comply with it, the U.S. would have to subordinate itself to the EU and lose some of its own sovereignty, and as if he were to tell the U.S. Congress that for them to okay the EU’s demands in this matter would be “nothing other than a termination of the transatlantic partnership.”

Congress has not yet passed this legislation (new economic sanctions legislation that is co-sponsored in the U.S. Senate by Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen) but it (“S.1441 – Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act of 2019”) enjoys strong bipartisan support and has been considered almost certain to be passed in both houses of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump. It is not a partisan issue in the United States.

Neither is it partisan in Germany. Both of Germany’s main political Parties (Schröder being SPD) support strongly the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, which will be considerably more economical for supplying natural gas to the EU than would be the U.S. Government’s demand that American shipped fracked liquified natural gas be used, instead of Russian pipelined natural gas, in Europe. Though this U.S. legislative initiative is called “Protecting Europe’s Energy Security,” its overwhelming support in the U.S. Congress is instead actually for protecting U.S. fracking corporations. The bill’s title is only for ‘patriotic’ propaganda purposes (which is the typical way that legislation is named in the United States — as a sales-device, so as to sound acceptable not only to the billionaires who fund the Parties but also to the voters on election day).

Both of America’s political Parties are significantly funded by America’s domestic producers of fracked gas. One of the few proud achievements of U.S. President Obama that has been proudly continued by President Trump has been their boosting U.S. energy production, largely fracked gas, so as to reduce America’s foreign-trade deficit. However, if this control over the U.S. Government by frackers continues, then there now exists a strong possibility, or even a likelihood, that the transatlantic alliance will end, as a result.

‘I’m Sorry’: Prince Harry Apologises for ‘Institutional Racism’ in Cringe Video Address

The progressive Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, said that he is “sorry” for not doing enough to fight institutional racism, claiming that it is “endemic” in society and that “unconscious bias” must be recognised and confronted.

The Prince made his comments in a video address delivered at the Diana Award ceremony honouring the 59th birthday of his late mother on Wednesday. The charity event was established to promote youth activism “in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales and her belief that young people have the power to change the world”.

In his address, Prince Harry echoed his woke wife, Meghan Markel, saying: “My wife said recently that our generation and the ones before us haven’t done enough to right the wrongs of the past. I too am sorry.”

“Sorry that we haven’t got the world to the place where you deserve it to be,” said the Prince.

“Institutional racism has no place in our societies, yet it is still endemic. Unconscious bias must be acknowledged without blame to create a better world for all of you.

“I want you to know that we are committed to being part of the solution and to being part of the change that you are all leading. Now is the time, and we know that you can do it,” Harry concluded.

The statement from Prince Harry drew considerable online backlash.

London Assembly Member David Kurten wrote: “These privileged woke celebrities should stop bashing the West and start celebrating the good things about Western civilisation and history for a change.”

Former Labour Party MP Kate Hoey added: “Genuinely cannot understand why he thinks, after his abandonment of our country, people here are interested in his views or his wife’s. And I speak as a staunch supporter of the monarchy #verysad.”

Last month, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markel, issued a similarly woke video address to students at her former high school, Immaculate Heart, saying that the “only wrong thing to say is to say nothing”, following the death of George Floyd.

The former Suits actress went on to tell the students: “As diverse, vibrant, and opened minded as I know the teachings are at Immaculate Heart, I know you know that Black Lives Matter.”

Britain's biggest ever crime bust has captured 746 crooked kingpins and foiled hundred of plots, with £54 million of dirty cash, two tonnes of drugs and 77 firearms seized after police smashed an impenetrable phone network.

A sting spanning the globe saw scores of raids carried out across the country in a major move in the battle against drugs, guns and illegal activity.

During the two-month operation officers seized the illegal cash along with firearms including hand grenade and machine guns.

But it was only made possible after the National Crime Agency and European forces managed to get inside a formerly secure phone system called Encrochat.

Experts in France and the Netherlands infiltrated the illegal communication network, which helped them understand what crimes gangs were planning, like in TV hit The Wire.

In the show one of the police officers built up cases against crooks by using a device called the Triggerfish, which collected data from their phones.

In the real world, investigators found 60,000 users worldwide and around 10,000 users in the UK alone on Encrochat – the sole use was for coordinating and planning the distribution of drugs, guns, dirty cash, money laundering and plots to kill rival criminals.

It was a treasure trove of evidence as top level criminals could be monitored speaking freely about their operations and plans, thinking their network could never be cracked.

They seized 77 firearms, including an AK47 rifle, sub machine guns, grenades, and 1,800 rounds of ammo

Major drug dealers who were targeted saw officers find more than two tonnes of deadly Class A and B drugs

Among the finds were an incredible 28 million Etizolam pills - known as street Valium from an illicit laboratory

Officers also seized expensive trappings of wealth including 55 high value cars, and 73 luxury watches

Protesters rallying against Africa's first coronavirus vaccine have accused researchers of 'manipulating the vulnerable' into volunteering for testing of Oxford University's coronavirus vaccine.

Around 2,000 people in South Africa are expected to take part in the Johannesburg trial, which began last week.

The vaccine is also being tested in the UK, Brazil and researchers say that it needs to be tested in Africa to ensure it is not affected by local conditions in the country.

But demonstrators gathering at the University of the Witwatersrand, where the trial is based, burned their masks and claimed tests were being carried out on poor people who don't understand the risks.

'The people chosen as volunteers for the vaccination, they look as if they're from poor backgrounds, not qualified enough to understand' protest organizer Phapano Phasha said ahead of the event.

'We believe they are manipulating the vulnerable', the activist and political commentator added. Some 2,000 volunteers in South Africa are expected to take part.

Fifth Pharmaceutical Company Charged In Ongoing Criminal Antitrust Investigation

The Trump administrations war against big pharma continues.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc., USA was charged for conspiring to fix prices for generic drugs, the Department of Justice announced today.

The charge, filed today in the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, alleges that Glenmark conspired with other generic drug companies, including a company with its principal place of business in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and Apotex Corp., to increase and maintain prices of pravastatin and other generic drugs beginning in or around May 2013 and continuing until at least in or around December 2015. Pravastatin is a prescription medication that reduces cholesterol, helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes. The charge alleges that the gain to the conspirators, and the loss to the victims, was at least $200 million.

“By cheating through fixing prices, generic drug companies artificially raised prices even though prescription drug costs were already sky high,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. “As today’s charge shows, the Antitrust Division will not hesitate to charge these companies, and litigate where necessary, particularly where their crimes resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in overcharges for life-saving medications.”

“During these difficult times, it is more important than ever that our pharmaceutical companies conduct business with the well-being of the consumer in mind,” said Deputy Special Agent in Charge Steven Stuller, U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. “When generic drug companies conspire to artificially increase prices, they do so to the detriment of many who depend on these medications to maintain good health. Along with the Department of Justice Antitrust Division and our partners at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the USPS Office of Inspector General will remain committed to investigating those who would engage in this type of harmful conduct.”

Report Claims Suspected Overdoses Are Skyrocketing As Lockdowns Continue

Suspected drug overdoses have swelled in the months since the mid-March outbreak of the coronavirus in the United States, according to a report.

State governments have enacted heavy-handed restrictions to slow the spread of the virus, but in many cases have contributed to increased social isolation and blocked people from services and escapes that have buoyed mental and emotional health.

The impact of the lockdowns and anxiety of the pandemic seems to be showing up in the number of overdoses, both fatal and nonfatal, across the country. Since March, each month has measured a significant increase in suspected overdoses over a year ago, and each month during which the crisis continues, the relative increase in overdoses grows larger, according to The Washington Post.

“Suspected overdoses nationally — not all of them fatal — jumped 18 percent in March compared with last year, 29 percent in April and 42 percent in May, according to the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program, a federal initiative that collects data from ambulance teams, hospitals and police. In some jurisdictions, such as Milwaukee County, dispatch calls for overdoses have increased more than 50 percent,” the Post reports.

The Post report cites increased social isolation, unemployment, and, curiously, disruption in normal supply lines of illegal drugs, which has allegedly forced many to seek new dealers or try unfamiliar substances.

Experts have predicted that the lockdowns, which shut down social institutions such as churches and forced tens of millions of Americans into unemployment, could result in thousands of additional deaths on top of those from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. In early May, just weeks into the pandemic in the U.S., the health group Well Being Trust estimated that 75,000 people would die from so-called “deaths of despair” from alcohol, drug use, suicide, and other factors.

Mark Zuckerberg will meet with Facebook ad boycott organizers in last ditch attempt to shore up loss of 400 brands from Facebook over 'hate speech' who are set to disappear from the site TODAY

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to meet with organizers of an ad boycott that have accused the social media giant of failing prevent hate speech and racism from being shared on its platform.

Advertisements for more than 400 brands including Coca-Cola, Starbucks and now Lego are due to disappear from Facebook on Wednesday, following the ‘Stop Hate for Profit’ campaign launched by a number of civil rights groups last month.

The groups enlisted the help of the multinational corporations to pressure Facebook into implementing new policies to help block hate speech in the wake of the death of George Floyd and amid a national reckoning over racism.

Facebook executives held at least two meetings with advertisers on Tuesday, the eve of the planned one-month boycott, in a last-ditch attempt persuade them to reconsider their course of action.

However, the talks broke down after the executives offered no new details on how they would tackle hate speech, three sources told Reuters. Instead, they pointed back to recent press releases, frustrating advertisers on the calls who believe those plans do not go far enough.

Now, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has agreed to meet with the organizers behind boycott, a spokeswoman said late Tuesday.

Air Force IDs Lieutenant Killed in South Carolina F-16 Crash

The U.S. Air Force has identified the F-16CM Fighting Falcon pilot killed in a crash at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina on Tuesday night.

1st Lt. David Schmitz, of 77th Fighter Squadron, “died while conducting a training sortie here in South Carolina,” Col. Larry Sullivan, commander of the 20th Fighter Wing, said in a Facebook video.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

In the video, Sullivan said that Schmitz received his pilot’s license at 17 years old, enlisted in the Air Force soon after and served as a loadmaster on the C-17 Globemaster III.

Schmitz supported “some of our nation’s most sensitive missions,” the commander said.

Schmitz pursued his dream of becoming a pilot, attended Officer Training School and graduated at the top of his class during pilot training, Sullivan said.

“Our condolences go out to the Schmitz family, the gamblers and to all of team Shaw,” he said, referring to the nickname of the 77th.

The latest accident marks the fourth crash of a U.S. Air Force fighter jet since May.

1st Lt. Kenneth “Kage” Allen died when his F-15C Eagle crashed off the coast of Great Britain during a routine training mission June 15. Allen was part of the 493rd Fighter Squadron, 48th Fighter Wing, at RAF Lakenheath, England.

An F-35A Lightning II, assigned to the 58th Fighter Squadron of the 33rd Fighter Wing, crashed on May 19 upon landing at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The pilot successfully ejected and was evaluated at the base hospital.

Days earlier, an F-22 Raptor crashed during a routine training flight near Eglin. The pilot was able to eject and was also evaluated.

Separate investigations have been launched into each incident, officials have said.
