Here's a theory (sorry if already suggested):

Piggybacking on another anon's idea that M. Cohen could have been the steward of any of the Prez's dirt on (((them))), what better way to get that evidence (video?) in to the hands of the supposedly adversarial special counsel (/ourguy/?) & the FBI?

If the evidence came directly from Trump, it could be easily dismissed, but not if vetted & promoted by actors perceived as hostile to DJT.

With Dems calling for protecting the independence of Mueller at all costs, this would be a brilliant way to deliver a poison pill to them while injecting a redpill into the investigation.
