The Leatherstocking Tales is a series of five novels by American writer James Fenimore Cooper, set in the eighteenth century era of development in the primarily former Iroquois areas in central New York.[1][2]

 

Each novel features Natty Bumppo, a frontiersman known to European-American settlers as "Leatherstocking",[3] "The Pathfinder",[4] and "the trapper".[5] Native Americans call him "Deerslayer",[6] "La Longue Carabine" ("Long Rifle" in French),[7] and "Hawkeye".[8]

The Leatherstocking Region

 

Leatherstocking Hand-Split Billet Co. is located in the Central Region of New York State known as the Leatherstocking Region. The area was made famous by the works of James Fenimore Cooper, the son of William Cooper, the founding father of Cooperstown, NY. James Fenimore Cooper authored “The Leatherstocking Tales,” a series of adventure novels which includes “The Last of the Mohicans.” Throughout these stories, the main character, Natty Bumppo was known by many other names, one of these being “Leatherstocking.”

Cooperstown is a village in central New York State, at the southern tip of Otsego Lake. It’s known for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, with its interactive exhibits, artifacts and Plaque Gallery. The Farmers’ Museum depicts 19th-century farm life, and includes craft demonstrations and a hand-carved carousel. The Fenimore Art Museum features American fine art and folk art, plus a garden with lake views.
