The media is conflating "Cases" with "Infections". Cases are Infections that we know about. If the rise in Cases was truly a result of an increase in Infections then we would logically expect to see a rise in Deaths (unless doctors got better at treating it. but little has changed on that front). The weekly death numbers are trending down.

There should be a infographic-meme push explaining this.

It's would more likely get better at flying under the radar by making its hosts less sick so they don't stay home or seek testing.
