Sen. Mike Lee charged Senate Democrats with being on the side of violent protesters he described as “dimwitted, phony drama addicts” for opposing his resolution Thursday condemning “mob violence” in the wake of nationwide demonstrations over the police killing of George Floyd.

The Utah Republican’s comments came on the Senate floor during a heated debate with Sen. Bob Menendez after the New Jersey Democrat objected to the resolution, effectively killing it.

Menendez wanted to add a line saying specifically the president should not incite violence or legitimize those who engage in hate-fueled acts, noting President Donald Trump recently retweeted video of someone yelling “white power” and white people pointing guns at peaceful protesters.

Lee refused, calling Democrats’ objection to the resolution “bat guano-inspired insanity.”

“This is a statement that says mob violence is bad. Democrats can’t say mob violence is bad without simultaneously taking a jab at the president of the United States?” Lee said.

US Coronavirus Cases Hit New Record-High Of 55,220 In One Day

U.S. COVID-19 cases hit 55,220 cases, its largest single-day high

Cases look set to remain beyond or near the 50,000 mark for the next week as new COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the U.S.

Driving the rise are cases in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas

The raging post-Memorial Day COVID-19 surge saw the United States post its largest single-day total of 55,220 cases, and the second straight day with more than 50,000 confirmed new cases nationwide on Thursday. The four states hardest hit by this crippling spike Arizona, California, Texas and Florida again reported record numbers of new cases and hospitalizations.

Data compiled by The Washington Post show more than 55,220 new COVID-19 cases Thursday evening. It exceeded Wednesday’s record of 52,789, the first time the new case toll exceeded 50,000.

Johns Hopkins University reported a slightly lower number, but one also above 50,000. It recorded 50,203 new coronavirus cases Wednesday, while Worldometer reported 51,097 cases in the U.S. Wednesday's horrific record eclipsed the previous high of 45,255 new cases recorded on June 26.

Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center reported more than 2.69 million cases in the U.S. and 128,000 deaths. On the other hand, Worldometer reported 2.78 million cases and 130,000 deaths on Wednesday.

With a population of 21 million, Florida revealed 10,109 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, a new single-day record high. It reported 6,563 cases Wednesday. Thursday was the 25th straight day the state set a record high in its seven-day rolling average.

According to Reuters, infections rose by 168%, or by more than 95,000 new cases. The positivity rate has skyrocketed to 15% from 4% in late May. Florida has reported more new daily COVID-19 cases than any European country had at the height of their outbreaks.

Only New York has suffered more than 10,000 new cases in a single day. New York reported 12,847 new infections on April 10.

Joe Biden’s Claims of Cognitive Tests Unclear as Campaign Hides Results

Joe Biden told reporters on Wednesday he has taken a cognitive test, used to detect mental issues, but his campaign will not specify what exactly that means or if it will release the results of whatever test he took – if he actually took a test.

“I’ve been tested and I’m constantly tested,” Biden said when asked at his first press conference in three months if he is experiencing cognitive decline issues.

Biden did not specify during the press conference exactly what he meant by his claims he has been and is “constantly tested.” His campaign has not replied to a number of follow-up requests from Breitbart News as to whether he means he took the same test that President Donald Trump aced, or if he took a different test, or if he was just speaking colloquially, claiming that his daily rigor is what tests his cognitive capabilities. Also, Biden was possibly confused by the question, in which he was asked if he has been formally tested on this front.

If Biden did actually take a formal cognitive function test, it is unclear if he will release the results of that test–as President Trump has with his own such test–to the public, as Biden’s campaign has not answered when asked if he would.

Biden did release a medical assessment conducted by his physician last year in December concluding he was “healthy” and “vigorous” as well as “fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency.”

The three-page assessment, conducted by Dr. Kevin O’Connor of the GW Medical Faculty Associates, does not include any mention of a cognitive test that Biden may or may not have taken at the time. It also makes no judgment or recommendation when it comes to Biden’s cognitive abilities, only speaking to his physical health.

O’Connor, who served as a Navy doctor, was Biden’s doctor during his time as Vice President. He left the military for his current role, where he has continued as Biden’s doctor, after the Barack Obama presidency concluded, according to the three-page assessment.

In 2018, President Trump took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. It was administered by then-White House Physician Dr. Ronny Jackson, according to the New York Times:

Dr. Jackson said that despite expressions of concern, a cognitive test was not indicated for Mr. Trump and he had not planned to conduct one at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where the president underwent his annual physical on Friday.

Dr. Jackson said that Mr. Trump received a score of 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a well-known test regularly used at Walter Reed and other hospitals.

“This has been the narrative for a while. He saw doing the physical as an opportunity to put some of that to rest,” Jackson said while discussing Trump’s results. “He actively asked me to include that in it, so we did.”

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is copyrighted by Dr. Zaid Nasreddine, Neurologist at the MoCA Institute and Clinic in Canada.

“Each cognitive task in the MoCA test assesses a distinct cognitive function which is related to a specific neuroanatomical area,” Nasreddine told Breitbart News.

“The test is meant to be quick cognitive scan of various cognitive skills that may be affected by neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or Vascular Cognitive Impairment, two conditions that are very common after age 70.”

New Coronavirus Mutation May Be More Infectious; 'Virus Replicates Better', Says Fauci

It's now a frantic race to bring the first vaccine against COVID-19 online as quickly as possible before the natural mutations of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), the virus that causes COVID-19, render this new vaccine less effective.

This upsetting possibility was again brought to light in a new study published Thursday in the peer-reviewed journal, Cell. The study reveals a SARS-CoV-2 mutation carrying a Spike protein amino acid, and called "D614G," has replaced D614 as the dominant pandemic form. The study emphasizes D614G is more infectious than D614 but not deadlier. It also suggests the variant might have a "fitness advantage," meaning the mutation has enabled it to better survive.

In infected individuals, D614G "is associated with lower RT-PCR (Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) cycle thresholds, suggestive of higher upper respiratory tract viral loads, although not with increased disease severity," wrote the study.

The authors, who are members of the Sheffield COVID-19 Genomics Group, called for "continuing the surveillance of Spike mutations to aid in the development of immunological interventions." The study carries the title, "Tracking changes in SARS-CoV-2 Spike: evidence that D614G increases infectivity of the COVID-19 virus."

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), on Thursday sounded the alarm about D614G. He said ongoing research now seeks to confirm the virus's possible mutation into D614G and its implications in light of the raging COVID-19 pandemic.

“The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” said Dr. Fauci.

Dr. Fauci, however, said “there’s a little dispute about it,” referring to the mutation.

“We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not," he said in an interview with Dr. Howard Bauchner of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). "It just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible.”

A study published last month from Scripps Research in Florida said the mutation into Spike D614G “enhances viral transmission.”

Also on Thursday, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO), said “natural mutations” of SARS-CoV-2 are to be expected. She pointed out there are certain “domains” of SARS-CoV-2 that are “more critical,” such as the spike protein.

Vindicated? Trump-touted COVID-19 drug hydroxychloroquine works, according to new study

The anti-malaria drug that President Trump touted as a possible treatment for coronavirus, hydroxychloroquine, successfully lowered the death rate among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the most recent study of the drug.

The large-scale analysis, conducted by Henry Ford Health System, was published Thursday in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The study examined 2,541 patients who had been hospitalized in six hospitals between March 10 and May 2, 2020.

More than twenty-six percent (26.4%) of patients who did not receive hydroxychloroquine died.

But among those who received hydroxychloroquine, fewer than half that number — 13% — died.

More than 90% of the patients received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission to the hospital. Scientists say giving the drug early during illness may be a key to success.

The study’s authors also found one concern flagged in previous reports about hydroxychloroquine did not materialize: heart-related adverse events.

"The data here is clear that there was benefit to using [hydroxychloroquine] as a treatment for sick, hospitalized patients," said Dr. Steven Kalkanis of Henry Ford Health System.

The study scientists point out that other reports about hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus that had less positive, mixed, or negative results studied different populations; administered hydroxychloroquine later during illness; used different doses, and/or were not peer-reviewed.

President Trump was widely criticized in the media for saying that if hydroxychloroquine proves to work in treating coronavirus, it could be a game changer.

In May, he told reporters that he, himself, took a course of the drug as a preventive measure after several White House officials were diaagnosed with Covid-19. Trump says he suffered no ill effects from hydroxychloroquine.

Henry Ford Health System is also studying 3,000 healthcare and frontline workers to see if hydroxychloroquine can prevent coronavirus. That study is titled: "Will Hydroxychloroquine Impede or Prevent COVID-19" or "WHIP COVID-19."

However, the study scientists say negative publicity and safety concerns about hydroxychloroquine — some of which they say is inaccurate or out of context — has made it difficult to recruit enough volunteers to take part.

LA Mayor Garcetti admits 'connection' between coronavirus outbreak and protests, after downplaying link

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday that public protests are likely causing the number of citywide coronavirus cases to spike, just two days after claiming there wasn't "any conclusive evidence" showing a connection between the two.

Garcetti, a Democrat, was speaking at a press conference concerning the recent Black Lives Matter protests in Los Angeles when he was asked if the demonstrations were contributing to the spread of COVID-19.

He claimed he'd consulted with Dr. Barbara Ferrer, LA County's director of public health, and determined the protests were in fact contributing to the spread of the virus.

“I talked again with Dr. Ferrer about that this morning. She does think some of the spread did come from our protests," he said. "It’s not the act of protesting – that’s a great and American thing to do no matter what your opinion is… but protesting without maintaining physical distancing, without wearing your mask, without having sanitizer – we just have to be smart. Whether you’re at a protest or at your home, whether in your workplace or whether you’re out shopping, these rules don’t change.”

He added, “We do believe there is a connection, we don’t believe that everybody has been doing this safely and wherever you can, please stay at home.”
