While Tripoli Welcomed Turkish Defense Minister, LNA Called For Russia And France
On July 3, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Guler arrived in the Libyan capital Tripoli for a surprise visit.
The Government of National Accord (GNA) held an official military ceremony for Akar and Guler. According to the Anadolu Agency, during the visit, they will review the activities carried out under the recent agreements between the two countries .
Ankara and Tripoli signed two memorandums of understanding last year. The first determined the maritime boundaries between the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, while the second was meant to enhance military cooperation.
Akar and Guler visited the Defense Security Cooperation and Training Assistance Advisory Command, where they met with senior Libyan and Turkish officers. The center was established in the framework of the military memorandum.
“[Turkey] will do whatever is needed for the Libyan brothers in accordance with the order of President Erdogan,” RT quoted Akar as saying during the visit.
Two days ago, Turkish Naval Forces Commander Adm. Adnan Ozbal visited Tripoli and met with Chief of Staff of GNA forces Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al-Sharif. The visit was reportedly ordered by Akar.
In the last few months, Turkey increased its support for the GNA. This allowed government forces to achieve significant success in the North-West of Libya. Following this, Egypt warned the GNA against any further advance.
Akar and Guler visit is a clear message of support to the GNA. The government will reportedly resume soon its military operations with Turkish support, despite Egypt’s threats.
At the same time, the leaders of eastern Libya also held talks with foreign partners. On July 3, the speaker of Libya’s eastern parliament, Aguila Saleh met with Russian foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.
”Moscow has decided to reopen its embassy in Libya,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was quoted as saying.
Lavrov also claimed that a ceasefire in the Libyan conflict, proposed by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on June 6, comported with decisions taken at an international conference in Berlin regarding the situation in Libya.
