American Airlines mechanic charged in cocaine importation conspiracy

NEW YORK – An American Airlines mechanic at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) was arraigned Monday for allegedly importing more than twenty-five pounds of cocaine that was recovered from an external compartment of a jetliner. Paul Belloisi, 52, was arrested Feb. 5 following an investigation by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at JFK. Belloisi, of Hicksville, New York, is charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import cocaine and importation of cocaine. He was released on a $300,000 bond and indicted by a grand jury in Central Islip, New York, June 18, 2020.

“As alleged, Belloisi was the ‘inside man,’ moving more than 25 pounds of cocaine from Jamaica to New York,” said Peter C. Fitzhugh, special agent in charge of HSI New York. “HSI and CBP’s joint efforts continue to stem these threats to our aviation industry by which perpetuate the international movement of contraband through our airports. HSI will continue to persistently investigate and dismantle these criminal enterprises working with our law enforcement and airline partners.”

“This internal conspiracy case serves as a great example of collaborative law enforcement efforts to combat those that would compromise their access to restricted space and equipment, while aiding international narcotics trafficking conspirators. “As alleged, this airline mechanic abused his position as a trusted employee and his access to sensitive areas of JFK Airport to participate in the clandestine importation of cocaine,” stated United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard P. Donoghue. “These charges will serve as a warning that federal law enforcement authorities remain vigilant in protecting the security of our borders and fighting the scourge of international narcotics trafficking. Those who attempt to poison our communities by smuggling drugs through our ports of entry will be held accountable.”

According to court filings, on Feb. 4, 2020, shortly after American Airlines flight 1349 arrived at JFK Terminal 8 from Montego Bay, Jamaica, a routine search by CBP officers who are members of the JFK Anti-Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team revealed approximately 11.594 kilograms (25.56 pounds) of cocaine bricks concealed behind an insulation blanket in an external mechanical compartment beneath the aircraft. CBP officers and HSI special agents then began visual surveillance of the aircraft from a distance. Shortly before the aircraft was scheduled to depart, Belloisi was observed approaching the aircraft and entering the compartment where the cocaine had been hidden. The officers confronted Belloisi after he exited the compartment and observed evidence that Belloisi had handled the area where the cocaine bricks were discovered. Belloisi also had carried an empty tool bag to the aircraft and had cutouts in the lining of his jacket, which together were sufficiently large to hold the bricks of cocaine that had been in the compartment.

The charges in the indictment are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, Belloisi faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The government’s case is being handled by the EDNY’s General Crimes section.

Urban Dictionary defines “choke the chicken” as masturbation; so is “clean the hosepipe”.

Tatchell said that Biden’s “attraction to children is also the reason he became a teetotaler,” because “he realized he couldn’t control himself in public with a few drinks in him.”

Tatchell also said that when Biden married fellow law student Neilia Hunter, who was from an affluent Skaneateles, New York background, she had to “overcome her parents’ reluctance for her to marry a young man with Joe’s dubious reputation.”

Air France, the French subsidiary of Air France-KLM, is planning to cut more than 7,500 jobs over the next three years despite having received a multi-billion euro bailout from the state.

The carrier will slash 6,560 workers at Air France, and also eliminate 1.020 jobs at its regional French carrier Hop!

Air France expects to cut more than 6,000 jobs by the end of 2022 – it has a total workforce of about 41,000 currently. About one-half of those reductions are expected to occur through retirements and voluntary departures.

Hop! presently has more than 2,400 workers.

"Air France and Hop! are working together with the unions to implement plans that give priority to voluntary departures, early retirement arrangements and professional and geographical mobility," the airline stated. “Air France must accelerate its transformation to regain its competitiveness and strengthen its leading position in terms of sustainable transition.”

Air France attributed the job losses to the uncertainties of the coronavirus pandemic and what it expects to be a “very slow” recovery.

During the peak of the pandemic, Air France’s revenues plunged by 95% and the airline said it was losing €15 million ($17 million) every day.

Air France also warned it does not expect flight activity to return to normal until 2024 at the earliest.

The proposed job cuts have been widely assailed by unions, who staged a number of protests across France, including one at the company's offices near Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Unions and some lawmakers were outraged by the large restructuring considering that Air France will receive some $7.9 billion in state-backed loans.

China Imposes Quarantine to Fight the Black Death as Bubonic Plague Reported in Inner Mongolia

First coronavirus, then murder hornets, now bubonic plague?! Authorities in China have responded to one confirmed case of the black death and another suspected case. Both cases emerged in the semi-autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.

According to Chinese Communist Party reports, a herdsman in Bayannur contracted bubonic plague and is in quarantine and in a stable condition, the BBC reported. Officials also said they were investigating a second case.

That case involves a 15-year-old patient who came down with a fever after close contact with a marmot hunted by a dog.

Chinese officials issued a level 3 alert, forbidding the hunting and eating of animals that could carry plague and calling on the public to report suspected cases. The alert will last throughout the rest of 2020.

Wait, isn’t bubonic plague the black death?!

Bubonic plague, caused by a bacterial infection, launched one of the deadliest epidemics in human history. The black death killed about 50 million people across Africa, Asia, and Europe in the 1300s. Other large outbreaks followed, with one wave killing about a fifth of London’s population during the Great Plague of 1665. More than 12 million people died in outbreaks during the 1800s in China and India.

Today, however, doctors easily treat the bubonic plague using antibiotics. If untreated, however, the disease has a 30-60 percent fatality rate. Symptoms include high fever, chills, nausea, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin.

While much remains unclear about the coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19, the bubonic plague is well understood by modern medicine. This makes an outbreak far less likely.

Even though an outbreak in Madagascar involved more than 300 cases in 2017, a study in The Lancet found that less than 30 people died.

So what happened?

While it remains unclear how the man with the confirmed case of bubonic plague became infected, it is likely he contracted it through contact with a marmot. Last May, two people in Mongolia died of the bubonic plague. They contracted the disease after eating the raw meat of a marmot, the same type of rodent the teenager came in contact with.

Unless there is a hidden black market in raw marmot meat that spreads from Mongolia across the world, it seems extremely unlikely this particular case of black death will cause an epidemic.

“Unlike in the 14th Century, we now have an understanding of how this disease is transmitted,” Dr. Shanti Kappagoda, an infectius diseases doctor at Stanford Health Care, told Healthline last November. “We know how to prevent it — avoid handling sick or dead animals in areas where there is transmission. We are also able to treat patients who are infected with effective antibiotics, and can give antibiotics to people who may have been exposed to the bacteria [and] prevent them [from] getting sick.”

China may have overreacted to this case of the black death in part because Inner Mongolia is a semi-autonomous region, and China appears to be cracking down on semi-autonomous regions recently, for some reason. Also, China faces a deluge of criticism over its coronavirus malfeasance, so Beijing likely wanted to cover its bases, just in case.

Alleged sex offender is latest example of Montgomery County refusing to honor ICE request for law enforcement cooperation

BALTIMORE – A man arrested for sexual abuse of a minor was released from police custody in Montgomery County, Maryland, June 23, despite a request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers to hold him so he could be arrested also for violating U.S. immigration laws.

ERO officers had lodged a detainer June 19 with Montgomery County Detention Center on Rene Atilio Ramos-Hernandez, 56, an unlawfully present citizen of El Salvador and a convicted criminal alien, following his recent arrest for sexual abuse of a minor. The detainer was not honored, and Ramos-Hernandez was released back into the community June 23. Officers at Montgomery County Detention Center called to notify the ERO Baltimore field office as he was being released but refused to hold Ramos-Hernandez for the time required for ERO officers to travel to the facility.

“Montgomery County continues the practice of not honoring lawful ICE detainers and release potential public safety threats back into the community,” said acting Baltimore Field Office Director Francisco Madrigal. “When they refuse to give adequate notification of an impending release to allow a safe transfer of custody, it shows their actions are insincere. ICE believes the best way to protect public safety is for law enforcement to work together.”

About Detainers

Under federal law, ICE has the authority to lodge immigration detainers with law enforcement partners who have custody of individuals arrested on criminal charges and who ICE has probable cause to believe are removable aliens. The detainer form asks the other law enforcement agency to notify ICE in advance of release and to maintain custody of the alien for a brief period of time so that ICE can take custody of that person in a safe and secure setting upon release from that agency’s custody. Yet, across the United States, several jurisdictions refuse to honor detainers and instead choose to willingly release criminal offenders back into their local communities where they are free to offend.

Congress has established no process, requirement, or expectation directing ICE to seek a judicial warrant from already overburdened federal courts before taking custody of an alien on civil immigration violations. This idea is simply a figment created by those who wish to undermine immigration enforcement and excuse the ill-conceived practices of sanctuary jurisdictions that put politics before public safety.

Sanctuary Policies Put Public Safety at Risk

When law enforcement agencies fail to honor immigration detainers and release a criminal alien onto the streets, it negatively impacts public safety. Any local jurisdiction thinking that refusing to cooperate with ICE will result in a decrease in local immigration enforcement is mistaken. Local jurisdictions that choose to not cooperate with ICE are likely to see an increase in ICE enforcement activity, as the agency has no choice but to conduct more at-large arrest operations. A consequence of ICE being forced to make more arrests on the streets, the agency is likely to encounter other unlawfully present foreign nationals who would not have been encountered had we been allowed to take custody of a criminal target within the confines of a local jail. Additionally, once these criminals are out on the street, confirming their whereabouts is often time consuming and resource intensive. Many of our arrest targets are seasoned criminals who are savvy about eluding law enforcement.

Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Spends $10 Billion To Increase Hold In The Natural Gas Market

In what is the biggest purchase in nearly four years, Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-A) has bought the natural gas assets of Dominion Energy (D) in a deal totaling nearly $10 billion. Alongside the purchase, Dominion Energy announced it had canceled plans for its Atlantic Coast Pipeline project with Duke Energy.

Berkshire Hathaway said Sunday it would buy the assets from Dominion Energy for $4 billion and assume $5.7 billion in debt.

“We are very proud to be adding such a great portfolio of natural gas assets to our already strong energy business,” Buffet said in a press release.

The buyout comes after nearly four years of apparent inactivity from Berkshire Hathaway due to what Buffet characterized as “unfavorable deals.” He told investors during a May meeting the company had accrued a cash hoard of around $137 billion during the period.

“He’s willing to make investments now of a fairly sizable amount,” University of Maryland finance Professor David Kass told Bloomberg. “It’s very positive that he’s sending a signal for the right deal at the right price, $10 billion or more, ‘We’re ready to go. We’re ready to invest.’”

Another analyst said the move by Berkshire could be a signal the energy market is currently “undervalued.”

“This looks like confirmation that commodities like energy are undervalued,” said Bill Smead, chief investment officer at Smead Capital Management. “At the bottom, assets move from weak hands to strong hands.”

The deal will significantly increase Berkshire’s footprint in the natural gas business, giving it control of 18% of all interstate natural gas transmissions across the U.S. Previously, it held around 8% of interstate transmission, operating mostly out of Idaho and Nevada.

Alongside the purchase, Dominion Energy said it would be dropping plans for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline after nearly 6 years of trying to get the project off the ground.

Dominion and Duke Energy announced plans in 2014 for a pipeline running for hundreds of miles through Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. It faced almost immediate criticism and backlash from environmental groups worried about the impact on air and water quality.

Corpus Christi man sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for producing child pornography

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A 31-year-old Corpus Christi man was sentenced Thursday to more than 16 years in federal prison for producing child pornography.

U.S. Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations in Corpus Christi, Texas, the Corpus Christi Police Department – Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Palm Beach County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.

Lucas Antonio Nord was sentenced July 2 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas to 200 months in federal prison. Nord was further ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution and will be required to register as a sex offender and serve the rest of his life on supervised release following completion of his prison term.

Nord pleaded guilty to the charges on Nov. 5, 2019. According to court records, Nord used social media to contact minor children for the purposes of having sexual encounters and to request nude images of them. Before handing down the sentence, the court heard about two additional victims in other states.

In April 2019, law enforcement learned Nord had contact with a 14-year-old minor living in Florida. He had asked the child to send him photographs of his genitalia via social media messaging.

Nord told authorities he also had actual physical sexual contact with at least two children and has attempted to solicit more than 50 boys on various social media platforms. Nord sent the children photographs and videos of his own genitalia and sexual acts as well as videos containing commercially produced pornography.

Russia Increased The Range Of Its EMP Guns To 10km: TASS Report

Russia has reportedly increased the range of its EMP (electromagnetic pulse) weapons to up to 10 kilometers, according to unnamed sources of TASS.

Reportedly, tests were carried out and various devices were damaged beyond repair, the weapons also allegedly entirely counter unmanned aerial vehicles.

The range of “guaranteed destruction” of the internal electronics of whatever is targeted by the Russian EMP rifles within the scope of the tests was brought up to 10 kilometers, according to previous reports the range was between 1 and 2 kilometers, meaning that this is a massive upgrade.

This was reported by TASS two sources in the military-industrial complex.

“Tests of electromagnetic weapons have been going on since 2015, the last firing tests of the EMP guns took place in the spring. Currently, the average effective range of electromagnetic guns firing at air targets is 7-8 km, the maximum is approximately 10,” one of the agency’s source said. He clarified that at the initial stage, the effective range was only “a couple of kilometers.”

Another source told TASS that “the destruction of aircraft at a distance of 10 km is provided by “burning” the electronic components of their on-board equipment.”

The source added that the shot of an EMP gun lasts a millisecond and, given the distance to the target, reaches it instantly, since electromagnetic radiation propagates at the speed of light.

The sources also explained that it is necessary to distinguish the defeat caused by the EMP weapon from the suppression of the enemy’s electronics, which is provided by electronic warfare systems (EW).

Most modern electronic warfare systems can suppress electronics at ranges of several hundred kilometers, however, they have incomparably lower power and do not incapacitate devices. EMP guns, in contrast, destroy equipment “at the physical level.”

In EMP guns, electromagnetic radiation of superhigh frequency, also called an electromagnetic “shot”, is used as a damaging factor. The radiation of an electromagnetic gun in a split second heats the affected object to extremely high temperatures.

In particular, it is reportedly planned to equip an unmanned version of a 6th generation fighter jet with such weapons. On a manned aircraft, electromagnetic weapons are dangerous to use, as they can harm their own pilot.

The editor-in-chief of the magazine Arsenal of the Fatherland, Viktor Murakhovsky, in a conversation with the NSN, said that electromagnetic weapons have long been in service in Russia, and noted that this area was actively developed back in the days of the Soviet Union.

“We already have such ammunition, ranging from a shell for a grenade launcher to combat units of anti-aircraft missiles. Now such electromagnetic generators are simply being improved with the use of new materials, increased output of electromagnetic radiation. <…In conflicts this was not applied. There were tests, after which they were put into service,” the specialist noted.

Militants In Mozambique Threaten Massive Foreign Investments Into Natural Gas

On June 27th, armed militants, likely ISIS, killed eight workers from a subcontractor construction company – Fenix Construction – for the gas megaproject that is progressing in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique.

The vehicle they were in was attacked four kilometres north of Mocímboa da Praia when the town was under attack about 70 kilometres south of the construction site of the enterprise led by the oil company Total.

Of the 14 individuals in the vehicle, three fled into the bush and survived while three others remain missing, in addition to the 8 that were killed.

Meanwhile, South African petrochemicals giant Sasol Ltd gave up on its licence to explore for gas off the Mozambique coast, the company said.

“Sasol will return Block 16/19 in its entirety to the Government of Mozambique. To this end, a withdrawal notification has already been sent to the relevant Mozambican authorities”, the firm said in a statement.

Sasol is the world’s top producer of motor fuel from coal and is trying to shed assets to pay off its debt pile and avoid a rights issue of up to $2 billion.

Furthermore, the increased ISIS militant activity in Mozambique is making any such endeavor dangerous, with piracy also on the rise.

Meanwhile, French Energy giant Total is moving ahead with its $23 billion East Africa liquefaction project.

Total’s project is an attempt to boost the, once-booming, natural gas market that has foundered in recent months under sagging demand as lockdowns triggered by the coronavirus response have hurt industrial activity.

Some projects, including Sempra Energy’s investment in a Port Arthur, Texas, LNG export terminal, have been pushed back.

The most significant pushback against these projects, however, is not the COVID-19 pandemic, but rather the increased militant activity.

There are some very formal and ineffective attempts to counter the militants, but no results have been achieved so far.

The issue is that delayed pay, and even if it comes on time it’s low has led to even the soldiers that are in Cabo Delgado to fight against the militants, are, instead, abusing the local population and looting.

On June 16th, Mozambican president Filipe Nysui announced that soldiers deployed to Cabo Delgado will receive a bonus, augmenting their pay.

Assuming the money actually reaches the enlisted ranks, it will at least prevent soldiers from having to prey on the civilian population for food and other necessities

The government also claimed a military success, with police operations director Victor Novela displaying photos of machetes, motorbikes, and other items recovered from insurgents during operations in Muidumbe district.

Israel flags security risk as US allows HD satellite images of Israel

Israel worries that Lebanon's Hezbollah and Gaza's Hamas militants could use commercial satellite images to plan rocket strikes on key civilian and military infrastructure.

An Israeli official flagged a possible security risk on Monday following a US move to allow American providers to sell clearer satellite images of Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Under a 1997 US regulation known as the Kyl-Bingaman Amendment, satellite images of Israel and the Palestinian territories used in services like Google Earth could show items no smaller than 2 meters (6.56 ft) across.

The curb, Israel had argued, would help prevent enemies using public-domain information to spy on its sensitive sites.

But the US Commercial Remote Sensing Regulatory Affairs Office said on June 25 it would allow enhanced resolutions of 0.4 meter. In a statement to Reuters, the agency said "a number of foreign sources" are already producing and disseminating sub-2 m. imagery of Israel.

Amnon Harari, head of space programs at Israel's Defense Ministry, said he believed the move was designed to ease international competition for US commercial satellites, adding: "I don't think they (Americans) asked us" in advance.

"We are in a process of studying what exactly is written there, what exactly the intentions are, what we can respond to, ultimately," Harari told Israel's public radio station Kan.

"We would always prefer to be photographed at the lowest resolution possible. It's always preferable to be seen blurred, rather than precisely."

Ghislaine Maxwell, the confidant and ex-girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, was transferred to a New York federal prison on Monday following her arrest in New Hampshire last week.

“Yes, she is in BOP custody at MDC Brooklyn. We decline to comment further,” the Federal Bureau of Prisons told Fox News.

Maxwell, the daughter of late British media magnate Robert Maxwell, has been indicted on multiple charges in connection to an alleged sex-trafficking operation that brought girls – some as young as 14 – to Epstein's Manhattan home.

Prosecutors alleged that Maxwell, between 1994-1997, "assisted, facilitated and contributed to Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of minor girls by, among other things, helping Epstein to recruit, groom and ultimately abuse victims known to Maxwell and Epstein to be under the age of 18."

They added, "Moreover, in an effort to conceal her crimes, Maxwell repeatedly lied when questioned about her conduct, including in relation to some of the minor victims… when providing testimony under oath in 2016."

"Racist" College Researcher Ousted After Sharing Study Showing No Racial Bias In Police Shootings

The vice president of Research and Innovation at Michigan State University, physicist Stephen Hsu, has been forced out of his position at the university after daring to show actual facts from a 2019 study that show there to be no racial bias in incidents of police shootings.

Hsu wrote on his blog on Sunday that “The [Graduate Employees Union] alleged that I am a racist because I interviewed MSU Psychology professor Joe Cesario, who studies police shootings.”

"Cesario’s work…is essential to understanding deadly force and how to improve policing," Hsu said.

Cesario's 2019 study found "that the race of the officer doesn’t matter when it comes to predicting whether black or white citizens are shot."

The conclusion of the study was that “contrary to activist claims and media reports, there is no widespread racial bias in police shootings.”

Pandemic Propaganda: Global Media Stoke Fears of ‘Outbreak’ of Bubonic Plague

Today, we are being told by multiple mainstream media outlets that resurgence of the Black Death is on the way. But is this story really news worthy?

Fear merchants in editorial rooms across the world seem very keen to promote the idea of a “high alert” situation in China’s Inner Mongolia region where it has been reported that one “suspected case” of Bubonic Plague was detected over the weekend.

Of course, this has triggered a knee-jerk panic, as Chinese health officials are now telling the public to avoid any risks of human-to-human infection from this supposed plague. In a country of 1.5 billion, one single case is relatively meaningless in terms of a public health threat. Nonetheless, many western governments are adopting the new Chinese model of bio-crisis management.

Of course, this story may burn itself out in 24 hours, but it’s important to point out how indicative this is over the standard media operating procedure in the era of COVID.

In the northern China city of Bayan Nur, the government has since issued a level III crisis warning, urging residents to strictly follow prevention and control measures regarding the handling of wild animals. They are being told this is to “to prevent and control the plague.”

Also known historically as the “Black Death,” the Bubonic Plague is a bacterial disease normally spread by fleas living on wild rodents. In the most extreme cases, without treatment, it can cause death in up to 60 percent of patients, according to the World Health Organization could even kill an adult in 24 hours. But cases are extremely rare and there are well known treatments available for this infection, including various antibiotics.

Although it’s been virtually eradicated in the developed world, it has appeared on the scene in recent years, but not beyond the odd case. Certainly, one single case in rural China is hardly reason to raise a pandemic alarm. According to Healthline, only a couple thousand cases are reported worldwide each year, most of which are located in Africa, India, and Peru, and also in the U.S. which records roughly seven cases a year mostly in Southwestern states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.

More likely, this is the government-media complex and its pharmaceutical benefactors flexing their post-COVID muscles again. We can expect more scares like this appearing periodically in our news headline feeds, partly because they generate clicks, views, and revenue for mainstream media outlets, but more importantly because these alarmist stories are priming the public for a further roll-out of ‘New Normal’ medical martial law policies and increased surveillance.

It was a clumsy article about women in the armed forces that has done it for Golightly, making him the latest victim of the self-righteous narcissists who patrol the world of gender politics with a take-no-prisoners attitude.

They don’t care that it was more than three decades ago. They don’t take into account that Golightly was then a 29-year-old serviceman in the world of macho military pilots during the Cold War, and that his article simply reflected a then widely-held belief.

THE SASSOONS: AKA"THE ROTHSCHILDS OF THE EAST"

There once was a wealthy Jew named David Sassoon - who, like his father, had served as treasurer to the pashas (governors) of Ottoman-ruled Baghdad (in modern day Iraq). Understandably, Chinese officials were not pleased about the British India-China opium trade.

In 1839, the Emperor instructed viceroy Lin Zexu to stop the trade. To that end, Lin wrote a letter to British Queen Victoria appealing to her moral responsibility to stop the opium trade. Little did the viceroy know that by that time, Queen Victoria was already just a figurehead. It was Rothschild and his ilk that ruled Britannia. There was no response to the letter.

On November 7, 1864, businessman David Sassoon, founding father of the Sassoon business dynasty, died in Pune, India. It dominated world commerce in a number of commodities – most significantly opium – over the second half of the 19th century.

Sassoon was born in Baghdad in 1832 to Saleh Sassoon, a businessman and leader of that city’s Jewish community (the clan claimed descent from a Spanish family, the Ibn Shoshans). When David Sassoon, who like his father served as treasurer to the governors of Baghdad, clashed with one of them, Daud Pasha, he moved his family to Persia in 1826, and then to Bombay by 1832.

Sassoon initially owned a counting house and a carpet warehouse, but soon began trading in everything he could, including, most profitably, opium. When China’s emperor tried to outlaw the drug, which cut a wide swathe of destruction through the population of the country’s coastal regions, the British responded with war. The result was the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, which earned the United Kingdom a free hand in selling opium in China.

Sassoon established a triangle of trade, bringing Indian opium and cotton to China, where he received silver, tea and silk in exchange. He then carried these products to England for sale. Finished products from Britain, as well as cash, were then brought back to India where they were used to buy more opium. By the 1870s, David Sassoon had come to dominate the trade of opium to China, having pushed the British firm Jardine Matheson and the “Parsi” traders of Bombay out of the business.

According to the 1944 Jewish Encyclopedia: “He employed only Jews in his business, and wherever he sent them, he built synagogues and schools for them. He imported whole families of fellow Jews…and put them to work.”

The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) promotes scientific relations between the U.S. and Israel by supporting collaborative research projects in a wide range of basic and applied scientific fields, for peaceful and non-profit purposes.

Founded in 1972 by an agreement between the United States and Israel, the BSF is an independent body, directed by a board of governors consisting of five American and five Israeli members. Its base of operation is in Israel.

Funding for the research derives from the annual interest on an endowment contributed in equal parts by the two countries. Grants are made on a competitive, peer reviewed basis, juried by leading scientists from the U.S., Israel and around the world.
