Clearview AI ceases offering its facial recognition technology in Canada

Clearview AI has advised Canadian privacy protection authorities that, in response to their joint investigation, it will cease offering its facial recognition services in Canada.

This step includes the indefinite suspension of Clearview AI’s contract with the RCMP, which was its last remaining client in Canada.

The investigation of Clearview by privacy protection authorities for Canada, Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec remains open. The authorities still plan to issue findings in this matter given the importance of the issue for the privacy rights of Canadians.

An ongoing issue under investigation by the authorities is the deletion of the personal information of Canadians that Clearview has already collected as well as the cessation of Clearview’s collection of Canadians' personal information.

The privacy authorities appreciate Clearview AI's cooperation to date on the ongoing investigation, and look to the company’s continued cooperation as it is brought to conclusion.

As well, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada will complete its related investigation into the RCMP’s use of Clearview AI’s facial recognition technology.

The joint investigation was initiated in the wake of media reports which stated that Clearview AI was using its technology to collect images and make facial recognition available to law enforcement in the context of investigations. Reports have also indicated the US-based company provides services in a number of countries to a broad range of organizations, including retailers, financial institutions and various government institutions.

Given the investigations are ongoing, no further details are available at this time and interviews are not possible.

Alan Dershowitz hasn’t been seen at his favorite nude beach in months

Residents of Martha’s Vineyard will be seeing a lot less of Alan Dershowitz this summer — in more ways than one.

The lawyer famously enjoys letting it all hang out on one of the island’s nude beaches, Lucy Vincent Beach.

But we’re told that Dershowitz, 81, hasn’t been seen dismissing his briefs for months.

“Alan’s not been on the beach in ages,” one resident told us. “We think he’s hunkered down.”

Local gossips have been speculating that he’s keeping a low profile because he’s wrapped up in the exploding Jeffrey Epstein scandal. (He’s countersuing Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was forced to sleep with Dershowitz while she was being kept as a sex slave by Epstein. Dershowitz strongly denies the allegations.)

But Dershowitz tells us he hasn’t been out and about much this summer because of COVID-19 — and that his neighbors won’t be catching a glimpse of his habeas corpus for some time. When contacted by Page Six, the legal eagle told us that he and his family were staying off the beaches — both clothed and nude.

He said: “The beaches are more crowded than ever. I’ve been a couple of times, but very early in the morning. But so long as there’s still the risk of the virus, then we’re not going this summer.” He added, “We are taking long walks away from everyone else, but it’s a summer of isolation for us.”

Dershowitz said he is walking 5 miles a day, swimming in his pool and enjoying his wife Carolyn’s “great food.”

Back in 2001, Dershowitz said that Eleanor Roosevelt used to strip off on Lucy Vincent Beach as well, and added that his preference for nude sunbathing wasn’t some liberal hippie thing. “I don’t see that as a movement. I see that as just a personal — you know, people — there are a lot of beaches. There’s a lot of privacy. People do what they want. Skinny-dipping is as popular among conservatives as it is among liberals.”

Prince Harry and Meghan: We must acknowledge 'uncomfortable' past of the Commonwealth

The “uncomfortable” history of the Commonwealth must be addressed, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have said, as they tell young campaigners the world cannot move forward until it “rights those wrongs" of the past.

The Duke, whose grandmother is head of the Commonwealth, said there is "no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past", with “still so much more to do” to tackle racism.

"It's not going to be easy and in some cases it's not going to be comfortable, but it needs to be done," he said, explaining institutional racism still exists "because someone, somewhere, is benefiting from it".

The Duchess, who noted she had “personal experience” of racism and unconscious bias, added that “we’re going to have to be a little uncomfortable right now” in order to “push through” and “get to the other side"….

Fletcher and Pao had married just six months before they bought the apartment. Their marriage, barely four months after they met, had surprised some friends, in large part because, for several years, Fletcher had been living with his longtime boyfriend, Hobart “Bo” Fowlkes Jr.
