They're doing the death rates wrong.
Non Hispanic whites - 38K cases. 1,720 deaths. They call that 1%. That's actually about 4-5% deaths.
I think they're getting that "1%" by doing this - they're taking total cases, and they're comparing the number of deaths in the racial sub groups to the total number of cases.
If there are 172K total cases, and 1,720 white non hispanic deaths, 1% of all the cases end with a white, non hispanic death.
But since there were only 37K cases of white non hispanics getting covid, they're dying at a rate of about 5%. Probably over 70, probably a lot of nursing homes.
