Re: Syria
Bear in mind that the power structure is very complex and D.C. can be seen as an aggregate of multiple factions of various kinds and obedience competing for access to power. POTUS has to deal with all these people and compromise all the time, this is not some binary white hats vs. black hats shit - even though there are fairly clear lines of division when it comes to POTUS himself.
Where I'm coming from with that is, it's very likely that POTUS has to make concessions all the time to gain support from one group versus the other. It is no secret and has been widely documented around here that POTUS is close to the military. Ergo, his decision to go ahead and strike Syria may not come from the heart, but could be a price to pay to ensure the support of some military influences on other fronts. Or it could be something entirely different.
Bottom line is, never forget POTUS is sitting at the top of a large pyramid of power struggles, and a lot of choices that he makes that are not immediately obvious to us come from compromises that are required to strike the deals he needs.
AKA: have faith. I too, don't really believe Assad who had the upper hand suddenly felt the need to gas children to draw a swift and merciless joint military response from the West, but there are certainly other major stakes in that turn of events.
