The Guy Trump Allegedly Paid To Take His SATs Died 20 Years Ago

Amid the many revelations in her tell-all memoir (among them, an anecdote about her uncle once exclaiming that she was "stacked" after seeing her in a bathing suit for the first time back in her 20s), President Trump's niece, Mary Trump, claimed that the president hired a friend named Joe Shapiro to take his SATs for him. Shapiro, according to Mary (who presumably got the info from her aunt, Trump's sister and a retired federal judge appointed to the bench by Reagan), was known as a "good test-taker" and back in the day, before the dawn of photo ID, such a stunt wasn't very difficult to pull off.

The revelation spurred a handful of journalists and others to demand that Shapiro "come forward" and confirm the story. At this point, we can't imagine what would even Trump's most bitter enemies stand to gain from this, politically speaking. And apparently we're not alone in that.

A push for Wharton to "rescind" the president's diplomat has already been started, but given the fact that he has given millions of dollars to the school, and the first of its alumni to be elected president, we highly doubt the school would ever comply.

Former Fox anchor Shepard Smith joins CNBC to host evening newscast in continued 'pursuit of the truth'

Seems like a good fit

Veteran news anchor Shepard Smith has joined CNBC as an evening newscast anchor.

Smith left Fox News in 2019 after 23 years with the network.

What are the details?

Wednesday, CNBC announced that "The News with Shepard Smith" will debut this fall.

A statement from CNBC says, "Smith will anchor a new one-hour evening news program titled The News with Shepard Smith, airing Monday through Friday at 7pm ET."

"The newscast," the statement continues, "which will launch in the Fall, will cover the most significant news stories of the day and will feature the well-respected, fact-based storytelling that has been the hallmark of his 30-year career. Smith will also assume the new roles of CNBC's Chief General News Anchor and Chief Breaking News Anchor as well as Executive Editor of The News with Shepard Smith."

In a Wednesday statement, the veteran newsman expressed his pleasure at working with CNBC.

"Gathering and reporting the news has been my life's work," he said. "I am honored to continue to pursue the truth, both for CNBC's loyal viewers and for those who have been following my reporting for decades in good times and in bad."

He continued, "CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman, a journalist himself at his core, presented me with CNBC's vision for a fact-based, hour-long evening news program with the mission to cut through the static to deliver facts, in context, and with perspective. I know I found a great home for my newscast. I am excited to be working with the exceptional talent at CNBC and eager to build a team focused on uncovering the news behind the headlines."

Hoffman, in his own statement, added, "Information is coming at us from every direction. If we're not careful, life-altering decisions will be made based on half-truth, rumor, misdirection, or worse. We aim to deliver a nightly program that, in some small way, looks for the signal in all the noise."

"We're thrilled that Shep, who's built a career on an honest fight to find and report the facts, will continue his pursuit of the truth at CNBC," Hoffman's statement concluded.

Oprah Winfrey, Lionsgate Team to Bring New York Times’ ‘1619 Project’ to TV and Film

The New York Times’ “1619 Project” is getting the full Hollywood treatment, thanks to Lionsgate and Oprah Winfrey.

Under the deal, the controversial series of articles that sought to reframe American history around slavery will be adapted for the big and small screens — feature films, television series, documentaries, and various forms of unscripted content. Lionsgate will serve as the studio while Winfrey has come aboard as a producer.

“We took very seriously our duty to find TV and film partners that would respect and honor the work and mission of ‘The 1619 Project,’ that understood our vision and deep moral obligation to doing justice to these stories,” Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Times reporter who spearheaded the project, said in a statement to The Root, which first reported the deal.

It’s been almost a year since we published the #1619Project, the most important work of my life, and I am so excited to announce that we will be partnering with @Lionsgate and the one and only @Oprah to bring this work on slavery’s legacy to tv and film! https://t.co/nAk49WHQsO

— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) July 8, 2020

When the #1619Project came out almost a year ago, I stood in tearful applause for the profound offering that it was giving our culture and nation. Today, I am honored to be a part of @nhannahjones’ vision to bring her transformative work to a global audience. Stay tuned, y’all! https://t.co/zcmVlLeSKV

— Oprah Winfrey (@Oprah) July 8, 2020

Hannah-Jones called Oprah Winfrey “a trailblazer and beacon to so many Black journalists.” She added: “I am excited for this opportunity to extend the breadth and reach of ‘The 1619 Project’ and to introduce these stories of Black resistance and resilience to even more American households.”

Winfrey tweeted: “When the #1619Project came out almost a year ago, I stood in tearful applause for the profound offering that it was giving our culture and nation. Today, I am honored to be a part of @nhannahjones’ vision to bring her transformative work to a global audience. Stay tuned, y’all!”

“The 1619 Project” was published last year in the New York Times Magazine. The series’ central theme was that America’s true founding wasn’t 1776 but 1619 — the year that slaves from Africa were first brought to the colonies.

The series sparked almost instant controversy by claiming that the Revolutionary War was fought to preserve slavery. Several prominent historians, including one who consulted on the series, have disputed the claim and called out Nikole Hannah-Jones’ central essay for factual inaccuracies.

The Times mostly ignored the objections and Hannah-Jones won a Pulitzer Prize. Hannah-Jones made headlines last month after she said it’d be an “honor” if violent and deadly riots in the wake of George Floyd’s death were remembered as the “1619 Riots.”

Nikole Hannah-Jones will serve as the creative leader and producer on the new effort, working with Lionsgate and Winfrey.

The Times is pushing aggressively into Hollywood with scripted and documentary series as a way of promoting their journalism. The Weekly on FX and Hulu is a news and cultural docuseries based on the newspaper’s podcast “The Daily.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy: ‘Masks Are Now Required Outdoors’

Individuals in New Jersey will now be required to wear masks outdoors in situations where social distancing in not feasible, Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) announced on Wednesday.

“We have to take this step,” said Murphy. “We’ve gone through hell in New Jersey. We’ve lost over 13,000 people, we’ve brought our numbers down, we can’t go through that hell again.”

“Requiring masks outdoors is a step I had hoped we would not have to take,” the governor said on social media. “By and large, New Jerseyans have been outstanding in their compliance. But, unfortunately, we’ve been seeing a backslide in compliance in New Jersey and across our nation.”

There are limited exceptions to the order. Those under the age of two are exempt, and individuals are not required to wear a mask when eating or drinking at an outdoor restaurant. There is also an exception for instances “when wearing a mask would inhibit health or safety.”

UPDATE: Face coverings are now REQUIRED in outdoor public spaces when social distancing is not practicable.

Murphy adamantly defended his decision to require masks outdoors on social media, declaring that it is ” not about politics” but “about showing others that you care about their health.”

Wearing a face covering is not about politics.

It’s about being sick or healthy.

It's about life and death.

It's about showing others that you care about their health.

It's about showing your community what side you’re on in the fight against #COVID19. pic.twitter.com/MO2yoTYtp8

“Coronavirus doesn’t care what political party you belong to,” he said in another post, adding: “It doesn’t care what you may or may not think about masking up. It doesn’t care about you or your family. It just wants to kill you and move on to the next victim. It does care if you wear a mask. Period, full stop.”

— Governor Phil Murphy (@GovMurphy) July 8, 2020

“REMEMBER: There is no vaccine for #COVID19. There is no cure. There is no proven therapeutic,” he continued. “There is only social distancing and masking. That’s it.”

The governor also bluntly stated that not wearing a mask “is an act of selfishness.”

“It’s a sign that you think you’re invincible, and damn everyone else. The time for selfishness ended back in March,” he added.

Not wearing a mask isn’t a sign of strength, it’s not a symbol of politics.

Not wearing a mask is an act of selfishness, plain and simple. It’s a sign that you think you’re invincible, and damn everyone else.

The time for selfishness ended back in March.

As NBC New York reported, New Jersey “ranks third nationally in COVID deaths per 100,000 residents, though it has fallen to 13th and 40th on hospitalized patients and new cases per day, respectively.”
