Anon is missing the point at issue. What is being questioned is not the immaculate conception of Jesus the Messiah, to which Scripture attests, in both prophesy and history.

What is at issue is the Roman Catholic dogma of the immaculate conception of Mary, which gained some traction through the Marian cult of the Middle Ages, (not without controversy), but became an article of faith in the Roman Church in the 19th century.

This dogma, aside from being “new” and of questionable origin (it is not part of the Apostolic Tradition that guided the Church in the first millennium of undivided Christianity), raises significant theological problems for the Incarnation.

It’s one of the several issues which divides the Orthodox and Roman churches that wasn’t even around at the time of the Great Schism in 1054.
