Smoke inhalation (very hot smoke) will sear your lungs (One breathe), fluids then accumulate in your lungs and you basically drown. You pass out due to lack of oxygen. He may have been found unconscious/removed, and later died at hospital. Or it could be foul play.

Oops forgot, he may not have been in the room on fire (separate room), but smoke goes everywhere. Also, Carbon Monoxide bonds with your hemoglobin 200x faster than oxygen does. Which is why you pass out so quickly in a smoke filled environment-no oxygen!
