My kids were home-schooled at times. One's a PHD now, so worked well for us. One income is hard, though.
Best thing, if possible, is to have a job where you can move anywhere. I did. Get to a good school district. Many times extracurricular activities are more important than SATs & grades.
One of mine went to an Ivy because of extracurricular success. Could be anything, band, science, sports. The combo of good grades with aptitude that will benefit similar college programs is the key. Grad class had some better students grade-wise as my kid, but no other experience, thus no other Ivies.
If they go to college, make sure it's a good one ROI wise. Ivies, for example, have a lot of grants available. It was less expensive for us than other schools. You just have to get in.
