Paul Farmer and Jim Yong Kim met at Harvard Medical School in the 1980s and were both drawn to medicine by a shared desire for social justice.[2] Along with activist Ophelia Dahl, they decided to try and make quality healthcare available to those in poor countries. They raised funding and opened a clinic in rural Haiti, but realized they needed to incorporate more community work to realize their goals. Through dramatically increased cultural sensitivity, pointed listening skills, local partnerships, and home visits, treatment drastically improved, leading to Partners In Health.[1][3] The film follows their story from their beginnings in Haiti, to treating multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in Peru, and advocating for and implementing antiretroviral HIV therapy in Rwanda alongside Dr. Agnes Binagwaho.

PIH strives to eliminate this unnecessary suffering and death by providing free comprehensive health care for children…

We give a peanut-based, high-calorie food, called Nourimanba,to families with children suffering from severe malnutrition in Haiti. And in Malawi, we created a Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit at Neno District Hospital to address the same issue. We also help children in the district go to school when their families can’t afford the fees and supplies necessary to attend.

Since its beginning, Tom White enabled Partners In Health to do “whatever it takes” to improve the lives and health of patients in destitute communities around the world, whether financing the construction of a small clinic in Cange, purchasing a microscope, or paying $30,000 per patient for PIH’s first multidrug-resistant tuberculosis program. The owner and president of construction company J.F. White Contracting Co., he helped found PIH with his first $1 million donation and then systematically gave away his wealth—tens of millions of dollars—by selling his company, his assets, and his house to continue supporting PIH projects aimed at alleviating human suffering and poverty. He died peacefully in Boston Jan. 7, 2011.
