Mozambique Is Emerging As The Next Islamic Extremist Hotspot

A terror group affiliated with the Islamic State has been stepping up tactics and claiming bigger targets.

An Islamist terror group in Mozambique is staging increasingly sophisticated and destructive attacks on oil facilities and government targets this year. Its connections with Islamic State may be growing tighter, according to a report published Monday by data analytics company Babel Street.

The attacks are part of a three-year uprising in the country that has turned markedly more violent this year. Already, 447 people have died in attacks in 2020, a faster pace than last year, which saw 660 deaths in 309 attacks, the Babel Street report said, citing the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project.

Tactics recently used by the terror group, called Al Sunnah wa Jama’ah, suggest a growing relationship with the Islamic State and other terror groups. These include launching small drones for position scouting, displaying Islamic State flags during attacks, beheading victims, and kidnapping girls in the model of Nigeria’s Boko Haram, the Babel Street report said.

Map Links Mexico’s Femicide Crisis, Organized Crime

Mexico’s longstanding femicide crisis has only worsened during the coronavirus lockdown, with the government coming in for severe criticism for its handling of the killings of women.

According to Mexico’s National System of Public Security (Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública – SNSP), 144 femicides were registered between March and April. But one organization shows significantly different data.

According to the National Map of Femicides in Mexico, the reality is far worse. It counted 405 cases of femicide between March 16 and April 30. And according to its data taken from press reports, as many as 63 percent of the femicides it tracked had a link to organized crime.

InSight Crime spoke with Maria Salguero, creator of this map, in order to understand the characteristics of femicides linked to organized crime and how they are influenced by the dynamics of gender and organized crime in the country.

Erasing Hispanic history in the United States is now on the agenda. But this time, it’s not coming from the political left. Instead, Republican Party is calling for an end to Columbus Day (October 12) and replacing it with Juneteenth (June 19), which celebrates the end of transatlantic slavery in the U.S., even though the two dates are months apart.

Black Lives Matter protests have triggered more than just activism against police brutality. There has also been a wave of looting and destruction of historical heritage, including that of Hispanic and Latin American figures.

In the city of Miami, the statues of Christopher Columbus and Ponce de Leon, the first governor of Florida (where the first American city was founded and is still standing), were tainted with the communist hammer and sickle symbol and BLM, the abbreviation for Black Lives Matter.

This is not an isolated act of vandalism. BLM‘s founders are openly-declared Marxists and have even participated as observers in Venezuela’s legislative elections (where they called the opposition counterrevolutionary). They also personally gave dictator Nicolás Maduro an award during his visit to Harlem.

Yes, the movement that claims to fight police brutality rewarded the same dictator who has ordered the imprisonment, torture, and killing of protestors.

US airstrike kills Al Qaeda-linked terrorist in Somalia, destroys terrorist checkpoint

A U.S. airstrike on Thursday killed at least one terrorist of the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab terror group and destroyed a checkpoint set up by the group near Hantiwadaag, Somalia.

The U.S. military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM), disclosed the strike in an emailed statement to American Military News on Thursday. AFRICOM said the terror group had used the checkpoint to extort travelers and restrict people moving around the area of the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

“Al-Shabaab are using checkpoints to threaten, extort and restrict the movement of innocent people in Mogadishu and Lower Shabelle region,” U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Bradford Gering, the director of operations for AFRICOM said following the strike. “Al-Shabaab’s actions continue to impede much needed economic development and progress.”

AFRICOM assessed no civilians were injured or killed as a result of the strike and said the strike was conducted with the coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

Israeli forces on ‘high alert’ over fears of Iranian retaliation: Channel 13

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:30 P.M.) – The Hebrew-language Channel 13 reported this week that the Israeli Armed Forces had raised its state of alert in the northern region near the Lebanese border, fearing Iranian retaliation for the nuclear facility explosion.

According to the Channel 13 report this morning, Israel decided to raise the state of alert in the northern region facing both Syria and Lebanon, fearing Iranian retaliation for what was attributed to Israel as the reason behind the recent bombings at the Natanz nuclear reactor.

The news channel quoted the commander of the 13th Regiment of the Golani Brigade, Lt. Col. Avi Marciano, that his forces sensed a possible confrontation along the border and that Hezbollah is gathering information about its forces in the northern region.

The channel pointed out that Hezbollah has the motives for the war, especially after the assassination of the Iranian commander of the Quds Force, Major-General Qassem Soleimani, as well as the strikes attributed to Israel in Iran, noting that this summer is characterized by uncertainty.

In 2001, a lonely computer technician living in the countryside in Northern Germany advertised online for a well-built man willing to participate in a mutually satisfying sexual act. Armin Meiwes’ notice was similar to many others on the Internet except for a rather important detail: The requested man must be willing to be killed and eaten.

Meiwes didn’t have to look far. Two hundred and thirty miles away in Berlin, an engineer called Bernd Brandes agreed to travel to Meiwes’ farmhouse. There, a gory video later found by police documented Brandes’ consensual participation in the deadly dinner. The cannibalism was both a shock to the German public and a conundrum to German prosecutors wanting to charge Meiwes with a crime.

Cannibalism might be humanity’s most sacred taboo, but consent of a victim typically eliminates a crime, explains Emilia Musumeci, a criminologist at the University of Catania, in Italy, who studies cannibalism and serial killers.

More technically, cannibalism is not designated as illegal in Germany’s extensive criminal code: Until that point, laws against murder had sufficed to cover cannibalism. If Brandes had volunteered his own life, how could Meiwes be accused of murder?
