Due to harsh conditions such as debris, low visibility, whirlpools, strong winds and cold water temperatures, a number of fatalities related to drownings have occurred at Lake Piru. Douglas West, Lake Piru's parks and recreation services manager, said in 2000 that there had been about a dozen drownings during his 23 years at the lake. Most victims are noted to be inexperienced swimmers who are not wearing life jackets and who overestimate their own abilities or swim in prohibited areas.[12][13]
