Lodi gun expo 'on' despite health warnings against indoor events

LODI, Calif. —

Many fairs, festivals and events, statewide, are canceled this summer because of the coronavirus. A gun expo at the Grape Festival Grounds in Lodi is still on for this weekend – despite warnings from health experts about the virus exposure risk posed by large, indoor gatherings.

The event attracted numerous vendors along with guns and ammo enthusiasts.

"There's a lot of demand for firearms, firearms accessories and ammunition," said Guy Meyers, expo organizer from California Gun Shows LLC.

Meyers explained that firearms and ammunition are considered essential items by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and according to Meyers, that's why this event can happen when other fairs and gatherings are called off during the outbreak.

Many attendees said they're not too concerned about coronavirus exposure while at the gun expo.

"I know people that have gotten it [coronavirus] whether they were wearing masks or not," said Aaron Gabriel Mcmihelk. "I'm not gonna let fear stop me from living my life."

Health protection measures being taken at the gun expo to mitigate coronavirus spread include:

A limit to the number of people allowed inside the pavilion at one time

Only single-day passes being sold

No re-entry once a guest has exited event

A socially distanced ticket line

Encouraged use of masks and hand sanitizer

A 50% reduction in the number of vendors this year

Still, some expo-goers told KCRA 3 it felt a little too crowded on the inside.

"It's crowded. I was uncomfortable with how many people did not have masks on," said expo-goerKarenfrom Linden, California.

Others said they were simply pleased to be attending an event instead of staying at home.

"It's good for people to get out and do things regardless of what the event is," said John Marti. "I think kinda helps with being cooped up."

The gun expo will also run Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
