Trump denies Minnesota governor's request for $500M to repair damage from riots

President Trump has denied a request from Minnesota’s governor for money to rebuild parts of Minneapolis that were destroyed during the riots following the death of George Floyd. “The Governor is disappointed that the federal government declined his request for financial support,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's office said in a statement. “As we navigate one of the most difficult periods in our state’s history, we look for support from our federal government to help us through.” Walz, a Democrat, requested that Trump declare Minnesota a “major disaster” zone in a request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency on July 2 after more than 1,500 buildings were damaged by looting and rioting in the wake of Floyd’s death, totaling over $500 million in damages.

At least one Republican in the state had lobbied the Trump administration to reject the request, arguing that the state’s response to the unrest should be thoroughly reviewed. “If the federal government is expected to assist in the clean-up of these unfortunate weeks, it has an obligation to every American — prior to the release of funding — to fully understand the events which allowed for this level of destruction to occur and ensure it never happens again,” Rep. Tom Emmer wrote to the Trump administration in a letter. Another congressman, Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, praised the Trump administration’s decision to reject Minnesota’s request, placing blame on the local officials who told the police to stand down during the rioting.

“Great news! @realDonaldTrump has DENIED Minnesota's disaster request to repair half a billion dollars in damage from the riots,” Duncan tweeted. “Governors and Mayors who ordered police to stand down and watch their cities burn shouldn't get a penny in taxpayer aid!” Conservative radio host Mark Levin echoed the sentiment expressed by the two Republicans, telling Minnesota politicians to “pay for your own man-made hell.”

Phoenix Mayor Lied About Morgues Bringing In 'Refrigerator Trucks' To Store Overflow COVID Bodies

As the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Maricopa County climbed to new highs late this week, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego appeared on MSNBC Friday morning for an interview with Chuck Todd and Katy Tur to discuss the situation in the state, which has moved to close bars, and rollback other reopening measures to combat the outbreak. During the interview, Gallego claimed that the county's public health agency had just put in an order for refrigerated trucks because they were running out of space in the morgue. "Maricopa County, which is our county public health agency, just announced that they're going to be getting refrigerated trucks because the Abrazo health care system has run out of morgue beds," Gallego said.

Hours later, as the mayor's comments started proliferating through the media, representatives for the hospital system called and complained that the mayor's comment wasn't true, despite the fact that she made the claim - seemingly with a high degree of certainty - on a popular cable new show. Spokesman Keith Jones told azcentral.com that Abrazo hospitals have "adequate morgue space." Here's the story: Phoenix and the rest of the state have been asked to implement their emergency plans to prepare for possible COVID-19 overloads. Part of the plan, Jones said, was to proactively make sure there would be enough morgue space. So the hospital system ordered refrigerated storage weeks ago, but they have yet to be deployed. "At this point, it is not needed," Jones said.

Of course, it's not difficult to imagine why Gallego made such a specious - and, some might argue, alarmist - claim: Democrats in the state believe they need to discredit Gov Doug Ducey's COVID-19 response if they want to succeed in flipping John McCain's old Senate seat, currently occupied by Republican Senator Martha McSally, on Nov. 3. The special election is being held to find a permanent successor to the former residential candidate and longtime Republican Senator.

Read the Army’s ‘Operation Inclusion’ Email: Flyer Decries ‘Weaponized Whiteness,’ ‘Exceptionalism’

A U.S. Army email inviting employees to listening sessions on race and diversity referred to an attachment to the email, which contained a graphic that said the phrase, “Make America Great Again” is evidence of white supremacy, according to a copy of the email obtained exclusively by Breitbart News. The email — sent on July 6, 2020, from the Army Missile & Aviation Center’s Equal Employment Opportunity Manager Chaney P. Pickard to employees at the center on the Redstone Arsenal Army Base in Alabama — invited employees to attend and said: “see attached timeline” for specific times for the listening sessions.

The attachment’s first page contained basic information about the U.S. Army’s “Operation Inclusion” listening sessions, due to take place July 8-9, 2020, at the Sparkman Center Complex, Building 5309, in the Bob Jones Auditorium. The second page gives more information on the listening sessions. “Interested and available Soldiers and [Department of the Army] Civilians in the Huntsville, Alabama, Redstone Arsenal, and the [U.S. Army Corps of Engineers] areas are welcomed to participate in the listening sessions taking place 8 and 9 July.” It also listed specific times of the listening sessions. The third page says “U.S. ARMY EQUITY & INCLUSION AGENCY and Assistant Secretary of the Army – Manpower and Reserve Affairs” at the top, and five “Must-Read Articles For Every Leader,” along with web addresses to the articles. The fourth page contains the graphic that has outraged conservatives and lawmakers. It is a pyramid listing behaviors considered to be overt and covert white supremacy, including saying, “Make America Great Again,” celebrating Columbus Day, and saying “all lives matter,” or “there’s only one human race.” The image is credited to several sources, the most recent being “The Conscious Kid,” an Instagram account that posted a similar graphic in May 2020. The flyer’s version seems to be a re-creation of the viral post; the anonymous author utilized a different color scheme and introduced several typos. The Conscious Kid’s caption asserts “white supremacy” manifests itself “regardless of the presence or absence of racial hatred.”

The fifth and last page of the attachment is a graphic of hands of different skin tones holding on to each other, with the slogan ''“The Army Is What You Make It” next to a U.S. Army logo. The pyramid is what incensed Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who learned about the email from recipients. He has called the graphic a clear violation of the Hatch Act, which bans federal employees and members of the military from engaging in political activity at work. After Brooks revealed the email’s existence on July 8, 2020, the Army issued a statement that said the '''“Project Inclusion listening tour handout included two unapproved pages that were sent out in error and immediately recalled.”'
