'Mute White People' button appears on Instagram stories

A new button appearing on Instagram reads, “mute white people.” The Washington Examiner confirmed the button on Instagram Monday, following a tweet bringing attention to the GIF by conservative commentator Katie Pavlich. “Instagram has a ‘mute white people’ button in stories,” Pavlich tweeted Monday. Called the “unbothered sticker,” it was uploaded to online database GIPHY by Refinery29, a media outlet aimed at a female audience, GIPHY’s website shows. GIPHY moderates which GIFs are approved to be shared in its library and, subsequently, platforms, such as Instagram.

“To ensure that GIPHY stickers will always be fun and safe no matter where you see them, we have an enhanced moderation process for approving stickers into our library. This is a permanent part of our moderation process and may impact the turnaround time for uploaded content to appear within the Sticker API (which powers partners such as Instagram),” GIPHY’s website states. Refinery29 has uploaded more than 500 buttons and GIFs to GIPHY, its profile shows. Some of the GIFs include, “Pay Black Women,” “Reparation$$$,” and “Afro-Latina Magic,” and the outlet has received more than 3 billion views on its GIF uploads.

In March, the Heritage Foundation’s social media manager, Lyndsey Fifield, claimed the Daily Signal’s verified status on GIPHY “mysteriously disappeared” after posting anti-abortion and pro-capitalism GIFs. “Just hours after tweeting this, our verified status on @GIPHY mysteriously disappeared—stripping our gifs and stickers from the gif banks on Twitter and Instagram. The only pro-life & pro-capitalism gifs on IG. I'm hopeful this was a mistake and that their team will resolve it,” Fifield tweeted after saying one of the GIFs she created garnered 39 million views. The verified status was reinstated soon after, according to Fifield. “And they admitted they were wrong and reinstated our account without me taking any action. I replied to their email a month ago and (according to them) they just never checked our account again or saw my email before revoking it today,” she tweeted.

The button comes as a renewed conversation surrounding race has been sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day weekend. In addition to peaceful protests and riots, social media campaigns to fight police brutality and racism have also been launched. Blackout Tuesday, on June 2, for example, swept across the nation and was intended for social media users within the entertainment industry to remain silent that day in an effort to reflect on the Black Lives Matter movement. Other users shared solid black photos as a way to signify their solidarity with the movement. Instagram, GIPHY, and Refinery29 did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Justice Department releases Roger Stone clemency order

The Justice Department released President Trump’s executive grant of clemency for his longtime associate Roger Stone, revealing on Monday that the convicted felon’s supervised release and his unpaid fine have been commuted along with his prison sentence.

“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT KNOWN that I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, in consideration of the premises, divers other good and sufficient reasons me thereunto moving, do hereby grant clemency to the said ROGER JASON STONE, JR.,” Trump’s two-page order stated. “I commute the entirety of the prison sentence imposed upon the said ROGER JASON STONE, JR. to expire immediately; I also commute the entirety of the two-year term of supervised release with all its conditions; and finally, I remit any unpaid remainder of the $20,000 fine imposed.” Trump’s grant of clemency, dated Friday, further said: “I ALSO DIRECT the Pretrial Services Office, upon receipt of this warrant, to effect immediately the release of the said ROGER JASON STONE, JR., from supervision, and all conditions imposed, including home confinement, with all possible speed.”

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, an Obama appointee who presided over Stone’s case and handed down Stone’s 40-month sentence earlier this year following the GOP operative’s jury conviction in November, asked for more information about Trump’s grant of clemency on Monday, which the White House had announced in a press release on Friday. The DOJ made it publicly available shortly thereafter. Stone was sentenced by Jackson to 40 months for obstruction of justice and 12 months for the other five counts to be served concurrently. He also received a $20,000 fine and two years of supervised release.

Stone, 67, was swept up in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and had been convicted of lying to congressional investigators about his alleged attempted outreach to WikiLeaks, obstructing a congressional investigation, and attempting to intimidate a possible congressional witness.

Authorities 'confident' body found in Lake Piru is that of missing Glee actress Naya Rivera

The sheriff of Ventura County, California, said investigators are "confident" that they have discovered the body of missing Glee actress Naya Rivera. Rivera, 33, has been missing and presumed dead for several days after renting a boat last week at Lake Piru, located in southern California. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery of a body on Monday, and Sheriff Bill Ayub confirmed that authorities believe it is Rivera’s at a press conference held 2 p.m. local time. He said investigators believe the body, which was found near the surface of the water, is Rivera’s “based on the location where the body was found, physical characteristics of the body, clothing found on the body, and the physical condition of the body, as well as the absence of any other persons reported missing in the area." “We are confident that the body we found is that of Naya Rivera,” Ayub said.

Rivera is best known for her role as Santana Lopez in the hit television show Glee, which ran from 2009 to 2015. She was last seen when she rented a boat with her 4-year-old son, who was discovered unharmed and wearing a life jacket on the boat. It appeared that Rivera’s life jacket and personal identification had been left on the vessel. There have been multiple drowning incidents on the lake over the years. After Rivera's disappearance more than 100 people, including divers and aerial units, joined the search. Ayub said the body has been sent to the Ventura County Coroner's Office where an autopsy will be performed to formally identify the remains. Investigators said there is no indication that foul play or suicide played a role in Rivera's death.
