Top Catalan Politician Claims He Was Targeted By Israeli Spyware Firm NSO Software

Pegasus software, a spyware platform sold by Israeli cyber-intelligence firm NSO Group and said to be capable of gaining access to a smartphone's camera and microphone, turning the device into a ‘pocket spy’, is said to have been repeatedly used to target activists, journalists, diplomats, politicians and lawmakers across the globe.

Roger Torrent, speaker of the Catalan parliament and a regional MP for the Catalan Republican Left party, has claimed that his cellphone was targeted in 2019 using the Israeli spyware firm NSO Group’s Pegasus platform, according to two joint reports, by the Guardian and El Pais, published on Monday.

Torrent has been reportedly informed about the targeting by Citizen Lab, an online privacy advocacy group based at the University of Toronto’s Munk School. The lawmaker accused the “Spanish state” of conducting such an attempt, which he described as a “dirty war” against its political opponents.

According to the report, Torrent has been targeted by the spyware, which is capable of gaining access to a smartphone camera and microphone turning the device into a 'pocket spy', along with at least two other Catalan pro-independence politicians, former MP Anna Gabriel and activist Jordi Domingo.

“[It] corroborates and confirms the fears or ideas that we pro-independence campaigners had about the state being prepared to use all the mechanisms at its disposal to go after a legitimate political project,” Torrent said, as cited by the Guardian. “It seems wrong and unacceptable from a democratic point of view and with regards to the rule of law. It also seems to me to be immoral for a huge amount of public money to be spent on buying software that can be used as a tool for the persecution of political dissidence.”

Although there has been no clear evidence regarding the alleged targeting, the speaker argued that NSO sells its controversial software, which is used to track criminals and terrorists, only to governments, vowing to seek an investigation into the matter.

“But beyond that, I don’t know,” the lawmaker stated. “That’s what needs to be cleared up: who’s behind this; specifically, which state apparatus is using these tools in what I have to say is an illegal manner that contravenes the right to privacy, the right to private communications, and the right of a political movement with a legitimate and democratic political proposal to conduct itself without interference from a state that is ultimately persecuting political dissidence.”

In response to the Guardian’s report, Spain’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI) said in a statement that it acts “in full accordance with the legal system, and with absolute respect for the applicable laws” and under the oversight of the nation’s supreme court. The CNI did not reportedly respond to the newspaper’s direct question on the use of the Pegasus software.

In the meantime, the Spanish prime minister’s office said in a statement that there has been no evidence on the targeting of the Catalan politicians' cellphones, adding that such operations are usually carried out “in accordance with the relevant judicial authorisation”.

“The government has no evidence that the speaker of the Catalan parliament, Roger Torrent, former MP Anna Gabriel and the activist Jordi Domingo have been the targets of hacking via their mobiles,” the office said. “Furthermore, we must state that any operation involving a mobile phone is always conducted in accordance with the relevant judicial authorisation.”

On Monday, the Tel Aviv District Court rejected, for lack of evidence, a petition filed by Amnesty International to suspend NSO Group’s export license over allegations that the company's technology is used to target journalists, lawmakers and activists around the world.

NSO is facing another ongoing lawsuit filed by Facebook and its WhatsApp messenger division for being allegedly responsible for a series of highly sophisticated cyber-attacks that they claim has targeted the mobile phones of more than 1,400 of its users in 20 different countries during a 14-day period from the end of April to the middle of May.

After Spate Of Attacks, Officials Identify CJNG Cartel As Most Urgent Threat To Mexico’s National Security

Mexican officials hold the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) responsible for a series of brazen attacks over the last month, including an assassination attempt on Mexico City’s police chief on 26 June and the assassination of a federal judge and his wife last month. The judge was involved in the extradition case that sent CJNG boss ‘El Mencho’s’ son to face charges in the United States.

Many experts are now convinced that the CJNG has emerged as the most powerful criminal organization in Mexico following the arrest and extradition of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Local officials from Jalisco told The Wall Street Journal that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel has killed more than 100 public servants in its home state, ranging from mayors to soldiers and police, consolidating its power through a campaign of terror against anyone who threatens or challenges their power.

The attack on 26 June in Mexico’s capital city, however, indicated that the cartel’s war against the State could be entering a new level targetting high level officals with military-style assaults. The Wall Street Joiurnal subsequently reported of the attack:

more than two dozen gunmen mounted a predawn ambush, shooting at Mexico City’s police chief as his convoy drove down leafy, iconic Reforma Avenue and shattering the calm of the capital’s most elegant neighborhood, home to ambassadors, cabinet ministers and tycoons.

Using Barrett semiautomatic rifles, the assailants riddled Omar García Harfuch’s armored Suburban with more than 400 rounds. The police chief, hit three times, survived…

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, a retired Mexican security official said the CJNG has become the ‘most urgent threat’ to national security in Mexico:

“These people have the firepower and the money to challenge the Mexican state,” Renato Sales, one of Mexico’s former security commissioners, said in an interview with the newspaper. “The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is the most urgent threat to Mexico’s national security.” LINK

Mexican intelligence officials attribute the cartel’s growing strength to its unity – most other cartels have been weakened or destroyed by internal conflicts among members.

The Wall Street Journal reports the Jalisco cartel killed a federal judge and his wife last month and Mexican authorities are trying to monitor their activities and communications to anticipate who may be targeted next. Separately, the report states that the cartel is involved in a turf war against gangs in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato over control of a $3 billion market in stolen gasoline.

“This is an example of the challenge the Mexican state is being confronted with,” Enrique Alfaro, the governor of Jalisco – who is reported to be on the list (of the cartel’s targets) – was quoted as telling local media. “What we are seeing is a threat to institutions.”

The Jalisco cartel is run by Nemesio Oseguera, ‘El Mencho’, for whom the US Drug Enforcement Administration has a $10 million reward out for information leading to his capture. Oseguera, a former Mexico police officer, is believed to be hiding somewhere in the mountains of Jalisco state according to The Wall Street Journal’s sources.

When Will Sen. Ron Johnson’s Promised Biden, Burisma Investigation Report Be Released?

It was March 3 when Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) appeared on Martha MacCallum’s Fox News show to discuss his committee’s investigation of Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s involvement with a Ukrainian natural gas company, Burisma Holdings Limited.

Questions surrounding the former Vice President’s middle child have swirled since Biden’s presidential campaign announcement on April 29 of last year.

Hunter Biden was a paid board member of Burisma Holdings Limited. His firm Rosemont Seneca was paid over $80 thousand a month during that time, despite the fact that Hunter Biden had no experience in natural gas, nor could he speak the language. He did, however, have the Vice President as his father.

At the same time, Joe Biden was tasked with heading the Obama administration’s Ukrainian policies. His crowning achievement was forcing the country to fire one of its top prosecutors: Viktor Shokin — who was investigating Burisma Holdings when he was fired.

Johnson told the Fox News audience, “if there’s wrongdoing, the American people need to understand that.” The sentiment is surely genuine but how close his committee — the Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs — is to providing this understanding is unclear. And with the Senate in session for a mere 37 more days before election day, time is running out.

Sen. Johnson did not respond to this reporter’s request for comment.

Eight Republicans and six Democrats compose the committee with Johnson at the helm — this majority grants relative ease in conducting the investigation — with the exception of Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-UT) inconsistency.

Referring to the investigation and Biden’s corruption on March 4, President Trump said, “That will be a major issue in the campaign, I will bring that up all the time…I don’t see how they can answer those questions…that was purely corrupt.”

The most significant step taken in providing Democratic primary voters and Americans as a whole clarity on the Biden corruption was Johnson’s May 20 party-line vote victory to subpoena Blue Star Strategies — despite months of Sen. Romney flirting with a vote against it.

Blue Star Strategies is a public relations firm that consulted for Burisma. The committee’s probe is looking into allegations that the firm attempted to use Hunter Biden’s board position to influence the State Department.

Judge orders federal gov’t to let abortionists send out pills via webcam

Pro-life activists warn that in addition to killing babies, this will make it more likely that women will be at greater risk for serious complications.

The law cannot require women to consult with a physician in-person to obtain abortion pills while under COVID-19 lockdowns, U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang ruled Monday.

The left-wing American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) represented several groups including the pro-abortion American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) in a lawsuit demanding the suspension of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) regulation that mifepristone, the first half of the chemical abortion cocktail RU-486, must be administered in-person, citing the coronavirus public health emergency’s discouragement of non-essential outside travel.

Chuang agreed that the requirement posed a “substantial obstacle” during a pandemic, and ruled that, “particularly in light of the limited timeframe during which a medication abortion or any abortion must occur, such infringement on the right to an abortion would constitute irreparable harm,” the Washington Post reports.

“By causing certain patients to decide between forgoing or substantially delaying abortion care, or risking exposure to COVID-19 for themselves, their children, and family members, the In-Person Requirements present a serious burden to many abortion patients,” the judge added. He did, however, concede that states can still regulate abortion pills “above and beyond” the FDA’s requirements.

‘Toilet bowl abortions’

Coincidentally, the pro-life group Created Equal was protesting in front of the FDA headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland today with a giant banner declaring, “toilets are not abortion clinics.” Created Equal President Mark Harrington told LifeSiteNews, “Abortion advocates, including this federal judge, are using COVID-19 as a Trojan horse to eliminate FDA restrictions on pill abortion.”

Regarding today’s protest at the FDA, Harrington said, “Abortionists have come out into the open with their plans for early abortion — the sale and distribution of chemical abortion drugs resulting in increasing numbers of aborted children flushed into America’s wastewater systems.”

Abortionists seeing women in person before prescribing the deadly pills makes it possible for them to check the age of the unborn child – the abortion pill regimen is only supposed to be used on babies up to 10 weeks old – and also rule out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.
