Early life and education

Chaffetz was born in Los Gatos, California, and raised in California,[6] Arizona[7] and Colorado with his younger brother Alex.[citation needed] His father, John A. Chaffetz (1935–2012),[8] was a businessman,[9] and his mother, Margaret "Peggy"[10] A. Wood,[11] was a Christian Scientist who later became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and ran a photography business.[9][12] In the late 1970s, his father became involved with the ownership group of the Los Angeles Aztecs, a professional soccer team.[13][14] His father later wrote Gay Reality: The Team Guido Story, a book about gay couple Bill Bartek and Joe Baldassare, who competed on The Amazing Race.[15]

Chaffetz's father was Jewish, and his paternal grandfather Maxwell (Max) Chaffetz (1909–1986), the son of immigrants from Russia, became an FBI Special Agent.[16] Chaffetz's father's first wife was Kitty Dukakis (née Dickson), who later married Michael Dukakis, future Massachusetts Governor and 1988 Democratic presidential nominee.[17][18] The relationship between Chaffetz's father and Kitty Dukakis lasted four years[19] and produced Chaffetz's elder half-brother John Dukakis (born John A. Chaffetz),[20] who was later adopted by Michael and Kitty Dukakis. While in college, Chaffetz worked as a Utah co-chairman of Michael Dukakis' 1988 presidential campaign. As reported in 2009, Chaffetz remains close to his half-brother and the Dukakis family.[21]
